Read & name multiple excel sheets using RODBC
I'd like to be able to read multiple sheets from an excel workbook and use
the sheet name to name the resulting dataframe using RODBC. at the moment
i've figured out how to do it the long way (see below) but feel sure that
there is a speedier & possibly automatic way to do it in R. i've tried to
run a loop using sqlTables but it seemed to break the connection. unless

R-help Digest, Vol 77, Issue 9
Hi,
This may be due to several reasons. That I can think about:
1) Ensure you close *all* possibly open workbooks:
nBooks <- xl[["Workbooks"]]$Count();
for (i in seq_len(nBooks))
xl[["Workbooks"]]$item(i)$Close(SaveChanges=FALSE);
2) The excel application reference does not seem to be really released until the garbage collector runs. So this may help:
xl$Quit();

RDCOMClient: how to close Excel process?
Hi,
I?m using R package RDCOMClient (http://www.omegahat.org/RDCOMClient/)
to retrieve data from MS Excel workbook. I?m using the code below to
count the number of sheets in the workbook and then loop the data from
sheets in to a list.

ggplot2 stacked line plot
Hi all,
I have been hunting around for hours trying to figure out how to
generate a stacked line chart using ggplot2. This type of chart can be
generated in excel 2007 by selecting: Chart type > Line > Stacked
line. I can generate a stacked area chart using the following code:
p <- ggplot2(~, aes(x = ~, y = ~, colour = Type)) +
geom_area(aes(position = 'stack', fill = Type))

odbcConnectExcel2007
Hi
sorry if this is really basic but I am just starting on R.
Can anyone point me at how to write R objects into Excel 2007 files. I
have seen how to set up a connection to a file through
odbcConnectExcel2007(xls.file, readOnly = FALSE, ...) but it doesn't say
anything on how to write data
Thanks

xlsReadWrite Pro and embedding objects and files in Excel worksheets
Hans-Peter and other R developers,
How are you? Have you made any progess with embedding Url's in Excel?
Well, I have been busy thinking of more things for you to do;)
My colleagues in the lab are not R literate, and some are barely
computer literate, so I give them everything in Excel workbooks. I have
gradually evolved a system such that these workbooks have become
compendia of my

ggplot and scale_x_date
Hi all,
I have a question about setting arbitrary breaks/labels when using GGPLOT
and date/time data on the x-axis. I want to specify the breaks/limits
arbitrarily rather than using scale_x_date(major = 'blah'), much like when
arbitrarily defining breaks/labels using scale_x_discrete(breaks = blah,
labels = blah)
I have tried variants such as:
scale_x_date(major = seq(from =

RODBC connection to locked Excel2010 files
Hi,
I am trying to connect to an Excel2010 file while another user is entering
data. (Obviously it would be better to set up a SQL database, but this is
not an option at this point.). Typically we are not working on the same
sheets. However, if possible I like to read the most current excel file
into R.
RODBC works great as long as the other user has not open the file. I tried:

Cannot switch between excel files
I have recently installed MS Office 2007 in Wine 1.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit
I have noticed that I cannot switch between two excel workbooks. I can either work on only one excel at a time or do a lot of jugglery to switch between the two.
It will be great if anyone can give me a solution as I need to work on multiple excels most of the time.
Thanks

odbcConnectExcel2007 creates corrupted files
I tried creating a .xlsx file using odbcConnectExcel2007 and adding a
worksheet with sqlSave. This seems to work, I am even able to query the
worksheet, but when I try opening the file in Excel I get the following
message: "Excel cannot open the file 'test.xlx' because the file format or
file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and

RODBC - odbcConnectExcel2007 headers issue
Apologies if this is already answered elsewhere, but I could not find the
answer searching the archives.
I am trying to bring my data in from an .xlsx file. The data of interest is
an n x m array, but it is preceded with ~2 columns and 30 rows of
instrumental "information." An abbreviated example (cols denoted with ","
for this example:

rcom close Excel problem
Hello,
I just discovered that I cannot close the Excel application and task
manager shows numerous copies of Excel.exe
I tried both
x$Quit() # shown in the rcom archive
and
x$Exit()
and Excel refuses to die.
Thank you very much.

Read in from multiple Excel wksheets
I?ve got an Excel workbook with about 30 worksheets. Each worksheet
has 10000 rows of data over 30 columns.
I?d like to read the data from each worksheet into a dataframe or
matrix in R for processing. Normally, I use read.csv when interacting
with Excel but I?d rather manipulate a multisheet workbook directly
than set about splitting the original workbook and saving down each
part as a csv.

[OT] VBA to save excel as csv
Hi all,
This is a little off-topic, but it is on the general topic of getting
data in R. I'm looking for a excel macro / vba script that will
export all spreadsheets in a directory (with one file per tab) into
csv. Does anyone have anything like this?
Thanks,
Hadley

Re ading Excel 5.0 files with RODBC?
Hi,
i'm trying to read some data from excel files but it seems that neither
xlsReadWrite nor sqlFetch (RODBC) doesn't like the format (Excel 5.0).
When i open the file in Excel and save it in a new format Excel 97 -2003
everything works fine.
Is it possible to use ODBC connection to open old format files, or i guess i
will have to open and save every file in Excel in new format, which

Problem with RODBC
I have been trying to read some data from an Excel workbook without
success. The workbook is in .xls format and has multiple sheets, one
with the sheet name Data, which is the sheet I wish to read from. One
complication is that the header row of this sheet is comprised of
dropdown boxes.
I tried what I normally would do plus some variations. Here is the output.
