Using if, else statements
Hi all, Again I have searched the net and so on, without finding an answer to this surely simple problem. A short bit of code would be appreciated. I have a object named `data' with the following column headings. Date, maxitemp, minitemp, admissions, d.o.w. Where d.o.w. is day of the week, written "Sun" "Mon" etc. I just need to scale the Monday admissions by

Survival analysis with no events in one treatment group
I'm trying to fit a Cox proportional hazards model to some hospital admission data. About 25% of the patients have had at least one admission, and of these, 40% have had two admissions within the 12 month period of the study. Each patients has had one of 4 treatments, and one of the treatment groups has had no admissions for the period. I used:

General help on sample size based on recurrent events
Hello, I have a general help question that some of you might be able able to help. I would like to design a study (a two group comparison) based on reduction on events(say hospital admissions). In a previous study hospital admission rate of 140 admissions per 72 patients (over a 4 month period) has been observed. That is rate is about 1.9. In order to see the admission rate reduction of 50% over

Hierarchical Regression
Howdy! I'm a clinical psychologist desperately trying to get rid of SPSS. I just discovered R and like it quite a lot. The main reason why we're still using SPSS is the hierarchical regression where you enter bundles of variables into a linear model and get an R-sqare increase tested with an F-test. I already found add1 and drop1 but would rather need addn and dropn. Is there

SPSS F-test on change in R square between hierarchical models
Hi, I am wondering if anyone knows how to perform an F-test on the change in R square between hierarchical models in R? SPSS provides this information and a researcher that I am working with is interested in getting this information. Alternatively, if someone knows how I can calculate the test statistic (SPSS calls it F-change?) and dfs that would be helpful as well. The output and the test I am

nested hierarchical design
Dear R-Helpers, I would like to know what syntax I need to use to do a nested anova for 1. a continuous variable and 2. count data (x out of y) 1. The first I used to do in SPSS and I would like to be able to do it in R as well. This is the hierarchical model I would like to use: a continuous variable explained by factor A(fixed) + factor B(random) nested in A + factor C (random) nested in

accessing the attr(*,label.table) after importing from spss
Dear all, I just received a file from a colleague in spss. The read.spss could not finish the file due to an error (Unrecognized record type 7, subtype 18 encountered in system file) so instead I converted the file using stat-transfer. Looking at my data I see that most labels are in the attributes and I?d love to access them and assign the pertinent variables to factors without doing the whole

Teaching R - In front of the computer?
Dear R-Users, given you have been teaching R to students (grad level, mainly social science background, no previous programming experience, 80% know SPSS), what are your experiences concerning the style of teaching? Do you prefer to stand in front of the class like in "normal" lectures and you show them slides? Or do you you explain some concept (for example things like

Route Regex Requirement not working properly
I''m trying to get my routes to work properly. Here''s how I''m defining one of my routes: map.downloads '':category/downloads'', :controller => ''downloads'', :action => ''list_downloads_for_category'', :requirements => {:category => DownloadableFileCategory.category_regex} And here''s the method

Comparing models in multiple regression and hierarchical linear regression
I don?t know if this question properly belongs on this list, but I?ll ask it here because I?ve been using R to run linear regression models, and it is only in using R (after switching from using SPSS) that I have discovered the process of fitting a linear model. However, after reading Crowley (2002), Fox (2002), Verzani (2004), Dalgaard (2002) and of course searching the R-help archives I cannot

A really simple data manipulation example
In response to those who asked for a better explanation of what the Vilno software does, here's a simple example that gives some idea of what it does. LABRESULTS is a dataset with multiple rows per patient , with lab sodium measurements. It has columns: PATIENT_ID, VISIT_NUM, and SODIUM. DEMO is a dataset with one row per patient, with demographic data. It has columns: PATIENT_ID, GENDER.

Bizarre - R crashes on merge
Hi all, I have a large data.frame, 1530 observation with 6 columns. I want to merge a 7th column, a transformation of the response variable (hospital admissions), namely trans<-sqrt(copd$admissions+0.25) trans<-data.frame(trans) And now when I do copd2<-merge(copd,trans) (copd being my original data.frame), R either crashes or is taking an extremely long time to do the computation. I

OT: batch processing XLS files to CSV
Dear R gurus, particularly those of generous M$ tolerance and diverse gifts and knowledge! I have an interesting challenge that I will end up crunching in R involving service usage by patients. Maybe I can do all of it in R but I can't see how yet. My situation is that our IT Department can give me loads of XLS files about patients one of our services have seen. The are one per patient

Data manipulation question
Dear R-listers, I am a relatively inexperienced R-user currently migrating from Stata. I am deeply frustrated by this data manipulation question: I know how I could do it in Stata, but I cannot make it work in R. I have a data frame of hospitalization data where each row represents an admission. I need to know when patients were first discharged, but the problem is that patients were sometimes

Using lag
Dear all, I am having difficulties using the seemingly-simple function lag. I have a dataframe with several weather variables (maxitemp, windspeed, rainfall etc), and the response variable (admissions). The dataset is fairly large (1530 observations). I simply want to model the response against a lag of a couple of the explanatory variables, say maxitemp and rainfall. I would like to look at

Just 2 more questions - for now!
Hi all, Thanks for the help with my previous post. I have just two more questions for the minute. I think I said in a previous post that I like to use the terminal, i.e. run rterm.exe. On exiting the terminal, I am asked if I want to save the workspace. If I hit y (yes), the workspace is just saved as .rdata in my working directory, does anyone know how I can name it directly from the

A comment about R:
Readers of this list might be interested in the following commenta about R. In a recent report, by Michael N. Mitchell http://www.ats.ucla.edu/stat/technicalreports/ says about R: "Perhaps the most notable exception to this discussion is R, a language for statistical computing and graphics. R is free to download under the terms of the GNU General Public License (see http://www.r-project.

R-help question
Hi there, I have subscribed to R-help but am not sure how to view or post questions? I think this is the right way. I am planning on doing a multivariate regression investigating the relationship between depression (a continuous variable) and social support variables (mostly continuous, some categorical) among older people. I have a number of demographic and health-related variables that I am

map_data
Hello, I have some problems with calling the map_data function in maps package. Not so long ago it was not a problem, but for some reasons in July this year it became unavailable. For instance, if I call the following code: m<-map_data(?world?) The R returns to me: Error: cannot find function ?map_data? Kind regards, Poltoradnev Maxim Head of products promotion division PJSC
