Qs re writing/reading arrays, dataframes
Hi! I'm just getting started with R (and with the analysis of large datasets in general). I have several beginner-level questions whose answers I have not been able to find, and was hoping one of you would be kind enough to throw me a cluebrick or two. I have a 6-dimensional numeric array (which I'll call myarray) that is "fully named". By this I mean that non-NULL dimnames

Filtering R lists
Hello I am am new to R and any help with the following would be appreciated: I have a list (example attached) and I would like to create a new list which is a filtered version of this list. I.e I would like a list that only contains elements with this value: Chr 10 : 21853562 - 21855482 Any pointers/tips would be great. Thanks! This example does the following: 1)First, it indexes text from the "text.txt" file (see attachment) (actually, this is the text of the following book: "Abbas, Lichtman. Basic immunology"). 2)Next, it searches for the "extracellular

How best to get around shadowing of executables by system()'s prepending of directories to Windows' PATH?
My question: On Windows, R's system() command prepends several directories to those in the Windows Path variable. >From ?system The search path for 'command' may be system-dependent: it will include the R 'bin' directory, the working directory and the Windows system directories before 'PATH'. This shadows any executables on the Path that share a

the number of components of the mixture model and the stratfied data
Hi,all with my data, there are more than 1000 quantitative results of antibody concentrations, there may be 2 components(positive and negative), or 3 components (may be strong positive, positive, and negative), or 4-6 components. Could you tell me how to determine the number of components of the mixture model? the "anova.mix" in mixdist of the R software seems not work. my

How to calculate the AUC in R
Hello R-listers, I'm working in an experiment that try to determine the degree of infection of different clones of a fungus and, one of the measures we use to determine these degree is the counting of antibodies in the plasma at different dilutions, in this experiment the maximum number of dilutions was eleven. I already checked for differences on the maximum concentration of the

New package: hbim - Hill/Bliss Independence Model for Multicomponent Vaccines
Hi all, I have just uploaded the hbim package. This package does calculations related to the Hill/Bliss independence model as applied to mulitcomponent vaccines. Specifically, the package caculates expected relative risk and proportion protected assuming normally distributed log10 transformed antibody dose for a several component vaccine. It uses Hill models for each component which are combined

Christmas tree graphs
Hello R users, I wish to draw a type of horizontal bar chart for two groups (males and females). The values for one group will start at the y-axis and point to the left, and the values for the other group will start at the y-axis and point to the right. If you're (un)lucky, the resulting graph can assume the shape of a Christmas tree. The data are left.side <- c(107092, 113053,

barplot() using beside=TRUE and the density argument
Hi I am using barplot() to draw some barplots, with a matrix as the data so that multiple bars are drawn for each data point. I want to use the argument "beside=TRUE" to juxtapose the bars instead of stacking them. If I execute: barplot(data,names.arg=names,density=c(20,10),beside=FALSE) I get the expected behaviour i.e. the bottom part of the column is shaded 20 lines per inch, the

XML getNodeSet syntax for PUBMED XML export
I am looking for the syntax to capture XML tags marked with /DescriptorName MajorTopicYN="Y"/ , but the combination of the internal space (between "Name" and "Major" and the embedded quote marks are defeating me. I can get all the "DescriptorName" tags, but these include both MajroTopicYN = "Y" and "N" variants. Any suggestions?

Customize Legend in Juxtaposed Barplot
Hello, I'm making barplots out of binary data, typically 0=no 1=yes, but in some instances I have 2=Don't Know. Anyway, when I create a juxtaposed barplot, what appears in the legend is 0,1,and 2. I want it to read No, Yes, Don't Know. I'm not sure how to do that. In addition to this, the other variable that this juxtaposed barplot is grouped by is grade level, which is a

Mixed Latin, Greek and subscript characters in axis label
Dear R-helpers, I have been trying to figure out how to plot a graph with an axis label consisting of a mixture of Latin, Greek and subscript characters. Specifically, I need to write A[beta]{1-42}, where A is Latin script A, [beta] is Greek lower case beta and {1-42} is subscript '1-42'. I can use xlab=expression(beta[1-42]) and obtain the [beta]{1-42} part of the label. But, I can't

Strange axis labels?
Moi! I'm trying to add a rather long label to a y-axis, and it's so long that it won't fit into one line. However, things get strange when I try and split it over 2 lines. The problem seems to be the plus/minus symbol, which means I have to use expression(). I'm using R1.6.1 on Windoze 2000. As an example: thing1 <- expression(paste("log odds of survival probability (

Drawing schematics
Hi, I would like to represent the treatment course of a subject with an arrow representing passage through time and various ticks, arrows, or bars representing treatments done to the patient along the arrow. I would like to generate this sort of schematic for each patient in a database taking information from the database such as time of treatment and type of treatment. Does anybody know how I
