Help with expression
I have a problem with expressions. I am trying to create a title where the parameter of interest is displayed as a Greek character. Which parameter is being considered is stored in a character variable. As an example, if I have param <- "alpha" and then do plot(0, 0, main = bquote(Parameter==.(param))) then in the title I get "Parameter = alpha", whereas I want the

Importing a CSV file
Hi, I'm trying to load .csv file into R (3790 by 30). I'm having an odd difficulty. After I type: read.csv("niwage.csv", header = TRUE) the data appears on the screen. The last thirty or so observations appear on the screen and they have been read in correctly. However, when I type: dim(data) I see: NULL This seems odd to me--R seems to be recognizing the data but not

Combinatorial problem
I have been struggling trying to write some code to produce all combinations subject to some restrictions. I thought someone might have some bright ideas. I have 11 values which fall into 5 groups. I want all combinations of 2,3, and 4 values where each value must be from a different group. The numbers in the groups are different. Here is a definition of the groups: groups <- list(gp1 =

Reproducible research
I am investigating some approaches to reproducible research. I need in the end to produce .html or .doc or .docx. I have used hwriter in the past but have had some problems with verbatim output from R. Tables are also not particularly convenient. I am interested in R2HTML and R2wd in particular, and possibly odfWeave. Does anyone have sample documents using any of these approaches which

Microsoft SQL Server and R
I have a client running Microsoft SQL Server. I am interested in ways of accessing data from this server using R. I would welcome any information about how this can be done. I have a reasonable grasp of SQL and have experience with MySQL and RODBC but don't know anything much about Microsoft SQL Server. Printing an xtable with type = html
I have been playing around with producing tables using xtable and the type = "html" argument when printing. For example, if xtbl is the output of a dataframe which has been run through xtable, using the command: print(xtbl, type = "html", html.table.attributes = "border = '1', align = 'center'") I would be interested to see other examples of

Possible bug in foreign library import of Stata datasets
Concerning this article, Christopher Zorn, "Generalized Estimating Equation Models for Correlated Data: A Review with Applications." 2001. American Journal of Political Science 45(April):470-90. The author very kindly provides data for replication on his web page: http://www.emory.edu/POLS/zorn/Data/GEE.zip. I've been comparing the Professor Zorn's results obtained with

Stata support in package foreign
As you know, Stata support in 'foreign' was frozen a while back at Stata version 12. R-core has received a request from a grad student to 'give top priority' to supporting Stata 13. That is not going to happen, not least because none of us has access to Stata. However, according to Stata's documentation both Stata 12 and 13 use format 115, so foreign::read.dta should be

License statement
I am writing a package for a company for its internal use only. What is an appropriate license statement for the DESCRIPTION file? I would like a statement which reflects the private and proprietary nature of the package, giving copyright to the writer and the company. I also don't want to violate the licensing of R and the packages I am using (RODBC, ggplot2, zoo). David Scott --

Bessel function with large index value
I am looking for a method of dealing with the modified Bessel function K_\nu(x) for large \nu. The besselK function implementation of this allows for dealing with large values of x by allowing for exponential scaling, but there is no facility for dealing with large \nu. What would work for me would be an lbesselK function in the manner of lgamma which returned the log of K_\nu(x) for large

read.dta for files from stata 9.0
Dear R-helpers, if I want to read a .dta-file generated by stata 9.0 with read.dta (foreign), I get the message "not a stata version 5-8 .dta-file". I'm using R-2.6.2 and the latest version of the foreign package. Has someone any hint? With many thanks, Albrecht

Explaining Survival difference between Stata and R
Dear Everybody: I'm doing my usual "how does that work in R" thing with some Stata projects. I find a gross gap between the Stata and R in Cox PH models, and I hope you can give me some pointers about what goes wrong. I'm getting signals from R/Survival that the model just can't be estimated, but Stata spits out numbers just fine. I wonder if I should specify initial

Importing STATA files
I'm an R novice who is struggling with the importation STATA files into R. I've loaded "foreign" and tried the example based on the Swiss file, which works fine. I then placed a STATA file, auto6.dta, in my working directory, which is "C:\Program Files\R\rw1030\library\base\data". The following is what happened: > library(foreign) > read.dta(auto6) Error in

polr probit versus stata oprobit
Dear All, I have been struggling to understand why for the housing data in MASS library R and stata give coef. estimates that are really different. I also tried to come up with many many examples myself (see below, of course I did not have the set.seed command included) and all of my `random' examples seem to give verry similar output. For the housing data, I have changed the data into numeric

Large Stata file Import in R
Hi I am using Stata 10 and I need to import a data set in stata 10 to R, I have saved the dataset in lower versions of Stata as well by using saveold command in Stata. My RAM is 4gb and the stata file is 600MB, I am getting an error message which says : "Error: cannot allocate vector of size 3.4 Mb In addition: There were 50 or more warnings (use warnings() to see the first 50)" Thus

importing from Stata
Hi, I have a new job, and everyone here uses Stata. I won't give up on R, but I must learn better how to exchange data between the two softwares. I am now focusing on importing data from Stata to R, and I must confess that I am a bit disappointed with the read.dta function from the foreign package because IT typically happens that (i) I get a big R file (for example, a 15Mb Stata file

Read stata file from internet?
Dear R-helpers, I would like to have my students read into R an online Stata dataset: 'http://www.stat.ucla.edu/projects/datasets/risk_project.dta' I was able to read it into R after downloading it and converting it with StatTransfer (http://www.stattransfer.com/).
