ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes) capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin. For more info on Ferret see: http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/ The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it with you. Regard it as a

QueryParser doesn''t use StandardAnalyzer correctly?
I am having a bit of a problem with my search queries being parsed correctly it seems, and I wonder if anyone else has experienced this. I have written an index using StandardAnalyzer for analysis. I want to search that index by passing my user query through a QueryParser instance which is also using a StandardAnalyzer. However the resultant query does not seem to be a valid term query and

understanding stemming and synonyms
I am working with version 1.2.7 and want to use stemming and synonyms. I use the perl-bindings and get some problems. First of all: the perl-bindings dont allow the QueryParser a third argument when calling parse_query! So i cannot set a default prefix (which perhaps is the solution to my problem, but later more) i have a simple testcase: 3 documents, every document only has one word:

Range searches some times they work, some times not...
Hi i''m using ferret to enable geographical postcode. I take a postcode and distance in miles from the user, strip off the outcode and then retrieve the associated x y coordinates in metres from the db. Then i get two temp x''s and y''s and search for all results that are within the box, see code below. Problems start to occur when i search on big distances so for

oddness when adding to index -
I was having some odd results when working with acts_as_ferret (current trunk), so I decided to test with the current version of ferret to see if I encountered the same problem. I did. Here are the details: installed ferret 0.10.10 on debian sarge with ''sudo gem install ferret'' (btw, same results on OSX) opened up an irb session: irb(main):001:0> require

search_each segmentation fault and parser anomoly
The included test script turned up the following anomolies (run against Ferret 0.10.3, but had same problems with 0.10.2): 1. When the content word is not in the index the inclusion of a wildcard file term causes search_each to throw a segmentation fault. $ ./test.rb zzz file:*.txt query: +content:zzz +file:*.txt ./test.rb:28: [BUG] Segmentation fault ruby 1.8.4 (2005-12-24)

Is there any working way to search multiple indexes?
I''m running from the trunk, and hitting road blocks no matter which way I attempt to search across multiple indexes. I tried a MultiSearcher, but I can''t pass a string for the search query ms.search "iraq" TypeError: wrong argument type String (expected Data) So I tried creating a QueryParser to pass, but I can''t get the fields from the reader

aaf and dynamic attrs: a bug?
Hi! I faced some issue while using it for dynamic attrs indexing/search. Maybe I made something wrong. Here is test method. Everything works just fine until last line http://pastie.caboo.se/66274 . Tested on both stable and trunk of aaf and ferret 0.11.4. the short version of code below: Contact.acts_as_ferret :fields => [ :first_name ] assert

QueryParser : some remarks
Hi to all, First, I would like to say a big thank you for the work which was done on my 'wish bug' to allow mapping one field to multiple prefixes (http://www.xapian.org/cgi-bin/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=93). That's great! I have upgraded to 1.0.4 and I am revisiting my code, replacing the php query parser I wrote with Xapian's one. Everything works well, but I have some

Adding entry breaks index
Our ferret 0.10.13 index has been slowly growing on our debian server and has just got up over 14,000 records. Yesterday I randomly noticed that one search I did was suddenly giving whack, unexpected results. I have spent much time trying to track the problem. Tried ferret 0.10.9 - no change. Tried on a windows machine - where it works fine, and doesn''t give weird results (which just

[issue] The difference between QueryParser::FLAG_AUTO_SYNONYMS and QueryParser::FLAG_AUTO_MULTIWORD_SYNONYMS
I don't know whether this is a BUG or for special purpose... According to the definition of "xapian/queryparser.h", FLAG_AUTO_MULTIWORD_SYNONYMS contains bit of FLAG_AUTO_SYNONYMS . Therefore, long as I set the parse flag with FLAG_AUTO_SYNONYMS, the query parser will automatically activate the function of FLAG_AUTO_MULTIWORD_SYNONYMS. See the below source code part from

How to make QueryParser select entire word like "H.O.T"
Hi, I'm using xapian to build my search engine, but met with a problem. The code snippet is like: ----------------------Code begin------------------------------------------------------------- Xapian::QueryParser qp; qp.add_prefix("Singer", "S"); Xapian::Query query = qp.parse_query("Singer:s.h.e",

setting the default operator on a QueryParser
Hi all, Thanks to the authors for the amazing work on Ferret! I have a question about setting up the standard operators on a QueryParser. I would like my parser to default to AND queries rather than the default OR. In Java I would simply do: QueryParser parser = new QueryParser("contents", new StandardAnalyzer()); parser.setDefaultOperator(QueryParser.Operator.AND); But I

Numeric Range or comparision doesn''t work
Hi, it looks like Ferret still compares numeric fields by lexical ordering, not numerical ordering. I am using Ferret 0.11.4(I tried in both linux and windows, the results are the same). index = Ferret::Index::Index.new() docs = [ {:num => 1, :data => "yes"}, {:num => 1, :data => "no"}, {:num => 10, :data => "yes"}, {:num => 10, :data

"and" without boolean operators
Salve, Thank you very much for your kind answer. Spelling correction works very well now. I have just one more question. I am using Xapian::QueryParser() to create the Query. The flags are: FLAG_PHRASE | FLAG_LOVEHATE | FLAG_WILDCARD If I search, lets say for "king queen" (without quotes), I get all documents with either "king" or "queen". Is there a chance to

Parentheses for precedence?
I''m not sure whether this is a bug or whether I''m simply expecting Ferret queries to work in a way other than they''re intended. I notice that if use a query like: (other_text:"Collaborative tools") AND NOT other_text:podcasts I''ll get correct search results. However, if I put parentheses around the second part, like:

QueryParser::parse_query() uses OR by default? How to switch to AND?
I use the QueryParser::parse_query() method but I see it uses "OR" by default between words? Is there a way to make it use "AND" instead? I see there are flags I can pass to the parse_query() method but none seems to allow a switch from OR to AND. I would like to do that without having to write my own query parser. Everything else is fine with the QueryParser parsing, for

queryparser dies badly on double search words.
hey. I'm using the Search::Xapian interface version 0.9.2 (and xapian-core 0.9.2), and feeding the queryparser such things as "one AND NOT two" or "test NOT NOT really" makes it go "Aborted"... I've tried adding the exception handling from the other stubs to QueryParser.xs as well, but I still can't catch this error from perl. Does this mean

GSOC 2012: Dynamic Snippets and QueryParser Reimplementation
Hello, My name is Sean Mikalson. I am a second year Software Engineering student with a combined degree in Philosophy. I am interested in participating with Xapian in GSOC this year and a couple of projects have initially caught my eye: - Dynamic Snippets - QueryParser Reimplementation I have good working knowledge in C/C++, Java and SQL (specifically Transact-SQL). In order to determine
