Index.optimize
In the documentation, it says that optimize "should only be called
when the index will no longer be updated very often, but will be read
a lot". Does this mean it actually has a detrimental impact on updates
and inserts? In my project there will be many more reads than updates,
but there will still be a lot of updates. So should I be calling
Optimize once a day or something like that,

Unit and Functional Tests Bombing with Ferret
Hello,
I am currently using ferret 0.9.5 and acts_as_ferret 0.2.3 on windows XP
All my unit and functions test that used to work before I installed
ferret are erroring out. My index is on a model name Post, and it looks
like all tests that contains methods which does CRUD to the Post model
bombs out.
Is there anything special I need to do before running unit and
functional test?
Thanks

Problem importing lots of records
I run a script that imports a few thousand records into the database.
The script runs once for each of several XML files. What it does is
parse the XML and for each element of a certain type creates a record in
a rails database that gets indexed with acts_as_ferret. This worked fine
before but today after a few files (70000 records) this started to
happen for any file I tried:

In memory IndexReader bug?
Hi All,
Hope all is going well.
I''m having trouble with the following code creating an in memory index
reader - it seems to be attempting to read from a file regardless.
Here''s the simple code:
require ''rubygems''
require ''ferret''
a = Ferret::Index::Index.new
r = Ferret::Index::IndexReader.new(nil)
Running the code on my OS X machine

Index::Index.new vs. Readers and Writers
Hey gang,
A post on the Rails forum a while back had it sound like you pretty much
had to use the Index Readers & Writers if you were going to be
potentially accessing an index from more than one process. (i.e.
multiple dispatch.fcgi''s, etc)
Is this still the case, or does the main Index class do that black magic
behind the scenes? =)
I was having trouble implementing the

Help with Multiple Readers, 1 Writer scenario
Hi,
I''m building a web server application using Ferret [thanks so much
Dave], Mongrel and Camping which works fine servicing one request at a
time, but serialises searches if more than one request arrives, so I''d
like some advice please about the best way to use multiple readers and
one writer.
Some background ... query requests which in my case are always read
only, arrive via

Error : End-of-File Error occured at <except.c>
Everything was working fine till last night. This morning I have many
errors.
I am using acts_as_ferret. Last updated around a month ago on linux.
There are two different type of exceptions. I have over 12 exception
emails but these are the two distince types.
First exception:
A EOFError occurred in home#event_info:
End-of-File Error occured at <except.c>:79 in xraise

lock problems from concurrent processes.
Hi!
First, thanks a LOT for ferret. The API and documentation is great.
I''m trying to integrate ferret into a RoR app (DamageControl) and have
run into a problem with locks.
DamageControl consists of two processes that start up and run in
parallel. The first one is the webapp (which
is just a plain RoR app). The second is a daemon process that runs in
the background.
The daemon process

Possiible Bug ? indexWriter#doc_count countsdeleted docs after #commit
Hi David,
> Deleted documents don''t get deleted until commit is called
Ok, but FYI, my experiments show that #commit doesn''t affect #doc_count,
even across ruby sessions.
On a different note, I''d like to request a variation of #add_document
which returns the doc_id of the document added, as opposed to self.
I''m trying to track down an issue with a large

acts_as_ferret with STI models
Can acts_as_ferret search only one of the inherit models in the
hierarchy of STI models? Say you have Contents, with types articles and
comments. I know that you do Contents.find_by_contents, but can you
also create indexed for Comment and Articles?
Thanks for you help

Erratic behavior with ferret 0.95 and acts_as_ferret
I am getting this issue also... Does anyone know what this is? When will
Acts as Ferret be available for v10?
Thanks for your help in desperation!

Parallel indexing doesn''t work?
Hi,
I''m trying to get parallelized ferret indexing working for my AAF
indices, based on the example in the O''Reilly Ferret shortcut.
However, the resulting indices after merging seem to have no actual
documents.
I went and made minimal changes to the example in the Ferret shortcut
pdf, and indeed can''t get that to work either. I''d appreciate any help

Error with :create => true and existing index
I implemented a "reindex" command which simply creates an IndexWriter
with :create => true for a prexisting index.
The "reindexing" seems to start out ok, with several thousand docs
added, then Ferret throws an exception:
IO Error occured: couldn''t rename file "index\_0.tmp" to "index\_0.cfs":

I guess that _0.cfs is held

Indexing so slow......
I am indexing over 10,000 rows of data, it is very slow when it is
indexing the 100,1000,10000 row, and now it is over 1 hour passed on
the row 10,000.
how to make it faster?
here is my code:

doc << Field.new("id", t.id, Field::Store::YES,
Field::Index::UNTOKENIZED)
doc << Field.new("title", t.title,

Handling closed clients
We have a service that clients use to upload files. We have a couple of clients that are on slow links and so their upload times out. We get errors in the logs that I''d like to get rid of.
I was hoping that the recent commit 24b9f66dcdda44378b4053645333ce9ce336b413 would help us, but it does not. After digging in a bit, I have some ideas about why and a patch I''d like comments

Ferret 0.11.0-rc1
Hey folks,
Sorry for cross posting like this but this is an important
announcement for all Ferret users.
** Description **
Firstly for those who don''t know, Ferret is a full-text search library
which makes adding search to your application a breeze. It''s much
faster than MySQL full-text search as well most other search libraries
out there. It allows you to do Boolean (+ruby +

ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all
This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes)
capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the
simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin.
For more info on Ferret see:
http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/
The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it
with you. Regard it as a
