Re ading and Creating Shape Files
Hello R Community, I have imported a dataset which contain X Y coordinates and would like to recreate a shape file after some data analysis. What i have done is to import some taxlot data and join them based on some criteria. I want to check to see how well the joining went by reviewing the results in GIS. A couple things. I cant seem to import a shape file correctly using the maptools

sp: proj4string has no impact
Hi all, I'm faced with a problem applying the sp package: The projection argument in readShapePoly(Shapefile,proj4string="CRS class argument") e.g.: CRS("+proj=aea +lat_1=46 +lat_2=73 +lat_0=60 +lon_0=84 +x_0=0 +y_0=0 +ellps=clrk66 +units=m +no_defs") doesn't have any impact on the plotted object. I also tested the simple example: xy = cbind(x = 2 * runif(100) -

Problems generating image from tiff file
I imported the attached tiff file and converted the coordinate system to long lat and graphed it: californiatiff<- readGDAL("california1.tif") proj4string(californiatiff) > rasterprojection <- spTransform(californiatiff, CRS("+proj=longlat") however, when using the plot command for rasterprojection, I get a blob. I can see the outline of the state of california and

Using GIS data in R
I have a simple problem: I need to load a ERSI shapefile of US states and check whether or not a set of points are within the boundary of these states. I have the shapefile, I have the coordinates but I'm having a great deal of difficulty bringing the two together. The problem is the various GIS packages for R do not play well with each other. sp, shapefiles, maptools, etc all use different

plotting x y z data from an irregular grid
Hi, I'm trying to plot some data (z) that is linked to lat&long coordinates (x&y). These coordinates are not however on a regular grid. I also have some shapefiles on which I would like to overlay the data. I can plot the shapefiles (country/city outlines) and overplot the data, but only using quilt.plot because I otherwise always get the error message that 'Error in

map issues
Hi ! I have a shapefile that I can easily read into R using library(maptools). My problem stems from some warning messages that come even though everything seems to work fine. library(maptools) districts <- read.shape(filen = "a_ds", dbf.data = TRUE) length(districts$Shapes) so far so good. when I try and plot this I get a nice plot and a warning message: > plot(districts)

Issues with unionSpatialPolygons on Ubuntu
Hi, I've cross posted with r-sig-debian since they may be an issue for linux (never had this problem on my windows machine...) I recently made the switch to Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid), and found that unionSpatialPolygons() gives me the following error when trying to combine polygons within a shapefile: # Read in shapefile and merge polygons foo <- readShapePoly("foo.shp",

converting coordinates from utm to longitude / latitude
Hi, is there a function in R to convert data read with read.shape and which is originally in UTM coordinates into longitude / latitude coordinates? I found the convUL() function from the PBSmapping package but I have no idea how I could apply that to the read.shape object. Many thanks, Werner __________________________________________________ Do sragenden Schutz gegen Massenmails.

Are centre coordinates or upper left corners used of x, y for SpatialPixels?
Dear all, I'm working with satellite images in R and plotting them via the code below. I was wondering whether coordinates (spatial["x"], spatial["y"]) are used as centre coordinates of the pixels in the GRID? In this script; spatial["x"] & spatial["y"] are the centre coordinates of the satellite image pixels. I'm asking this because some

Creating a map with central Asian countries
Dear all, I am trying to create a map for central asian countries(Kazakhstan, Uzbekstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenstan, and Tajikstan). I tried google for shapefiles and Rdata files of central asia, but I can't seem to find them. There is only a world map and individual maps for each countries. If I use individual maps to create this map, how do I put them on a same graphic with different colours?

plot single part of the country using gadm map
Dear all, in GADM map there are three levels (nation, province and precinct) for each country of the world but for all of them you are never able to plot only one part of a chosen country. To be sure, I am trying to plot only one region of “Italy” and colour the different precincts in it. So far I am able to colour only the part of my interest but the programme still plot the whole country. Is

[newbie] how to find and combine geographic maps with particular features?
SUMMARY: Specific problem: I'm regridding biomass-burning emissions from a global/unprojected inventory to a regional projection (LCC over North America). I need to have boundaries for Canada, Mexico, and US (including US states), but also Caribbean and Atlantic nations (notably the Bahamas). I would also like to add Canadian provinces and Mexican states. How to put these together? General
