Modelling disease spread
I was at a lecture the other day and I saw a presentation of very neat
(short) animation modeling epidemic disease spread over a map region. When I
ask what software they used they mentioned SAS. Do you know if there are
equivalent resources in R to model the spread of disease with animation
output? My search in R-help and google didn't lead to any document (though I
found a couple of

Statistics on raster pictures - asking for an advice
Hello, I need to do some basic statistics on raster images (tiff or
png). I need only an advice where to start, which package is the most
appropriate. My search attempts were without success, yet.
Many thanks

Reading OpenOffice Calc spreadsheet into R
I am in awe of the project you developed but wish to do something simpler.
I have recently decided to give up on Microsoft Office and wish to use
OpenOffice exclusively. In the past I have used the RODBC package to
read data from excel files. Do you know how to read data directly from
OpenOffice calc files into R?

Calling R function from Java
Hi - I would like to have the same functionality like what R(D)COM server offers but from Java world. I have java code (on windows) and need to call some R code to run some computational job and get the result back into java code. I'm wondering if there's any direct package that offers this functionality? Thank you.

Calculating diameters of cirkels in a picture.
Hi,
Maybe this is more a programming questions than a specific R-project question, but maybe there is someone who can point me in the right direction.
I have a picture of cirkels which I took with a digital camera.
Now I want to use the diameter of the cirkels on the picture for analysis in R.
I can use pixmap to import the picture, but how do I find the outside cirkels and calculate the

Enterprise Software is all about wizards
Would any one else say that enterprise systems (+150 tables) are mainly
consisted of wizards.
The flow in the software from screen to screen is looselt based on how
the business flows, and is required to be very structured. From screen
to screen the options available to the user are very limited. There is
not much freedom and the user is not overwhelmed with options.

Win98 client passwords w/Samba 2.2.3a
Hello folks,
I am running Samba 2.2.3a, on a RedHat 7.2 server. So far everything seems to be working fine. I can access shares, print from Windows clients, but I cannot change the password from the Win98 client. When I try, Windows tells me that the old password is incorrect. Here's my smb.conf file

Visual Migration Design Tool
For a really long time, I''ve been using DBDesigner from FabForce.net.
For those of your who''ve never used it, its a freeware visual
entity-relationship diagram tool, which allows you to make database
designs visually instead of in SQL DDL. You can then use it to generate
the SQL to make your databse design into reality, or even run a

Is there a package for digitizing or reading jpegs, ets. in R?
I'm interested in digitizing some scanned time series, and looking for a
solution that is easy and flexible. I thought I might be able to use R's
locator() if I could get the image into a device. I noticed that there
are some packages like (rimage), but it (a) doesn't seem to be available
for the Windows version and forces me to upgrade a bunch of libraries
for my linux system. It

Digitizing the Plot
Hi R,
Wanted to check if there are any packages available for getting the
(x,y) data points of a graph or a plot, which is in the image format.
Say, the plot could be a published report, and I want to get the points
of the curve plotted. (I am speaking something related the subject
discussed in http://www.uniphiz.com/digitizing.htm)
Thanks,
Shubha

Does "sink" stand for anything?
Hello Everyone,
Learning about R and its wonderful array of functions. If it's not obvious, I usually try to find out what a function stands for. I think this helps me remember better.
One function that has me stumped is "sink." Can anyone tell me if this stands for something?
Thanks,
Paul

experience with analog channel banks in E1 land
hi,
we are currently planning are large site which will migrate from an old
siemens hicom pbx to asterisk.
it will be a slow migration, the asterisk server will be inserted
between the telco E1 and the hicom. new phones will be sip ones.
the customer has several fax machines and analog phones (some of them
have to be explosion-proof). around 50 analog ports in total are needed.

Is there a buffer or cache setting in samba?
Hi.
Can anyone tell me if samba has any settings that determine how much data
gets cached or buffered in RAM before being written to the computer's hard
drives?
I'm having a strange problem and I suspect that the explanation has to do
with that kind of setting.
I am using a Linux system (P4-3.06 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 2.4.22 kernel, samba
2.2.8a) to store video and audio files that can

Samba-3.0.34 can ADS join but not non-ADS join.
I was using Samba-3.0.14a perfectly fine.
Now, I'm trying to use Samba-3.0.34.
I can do an "ADS" join fine with Samba-3.0.34, but I cannot do my old
non-ADS join anymore. Winbindd starts and stays running fine, but when
I run net to do the non-ADS join I'm running into a strange "interfaces" issue.
It now wants an "interfaces" line in the smb.conf file when

video source
In order to experiment with the theora encoder, I bought a mini-DV camcorder a
couple of weeks ago; a Panasonic PV-GS9 for $250. I wanted a mini-DV because
it is claimed that capturing video from the camcorder to a computer over a
firewire cable results in an exact copy of the recorded video.
That was not my experience. The video I captured to my computer over the
firewire cable, using both

Ice 0.3 cannot connect to Icecast2
I've set up Icecast2 and IceS 0.3 (the version I'm told is better for
mp3 streaming, which is what I want to do), but I can't figure out why
IceS can't connect to Icecast2. Icecast2 starts with no complaints, and
a portscan shows that it has opened the default port I've set it to
(8000). However, IceS says it can't connect to it (both Icecast2 and

SIP dtmf=rfc2833 not working
We are testing some DTMF-driven applications over VOIP (legacy systems
which use fast pulses of standard DTMF tones).
The applications work fine when Digium IAXy's are used - no loss or
garbling of DTMF tones.
However, when we use SIP modems (such as Sipura 1000's), the DTMF tones
are frequently uninterpretable and our applications have to ask for
retries.
I am under the impression that

Miax: Digital voice channel when connecting to asterisk
Hi,
I've bought a Siemens GSM-modem based on the Siemens TC35-module.
I studied the operation manual of the modem and found, that for
transferring voice via the RS232 wire, the module supports
"RS232-mulitplexing" and wires the voice data on a separate
"channel" (whatever this means on RS232?).
Now I wonder, whether that feature is supported by miax.
All what I read
