Validation with Aggregation
ActiveRecord supports composed_of for value objects which is
fantastic but one thing that it doesn''t seem to support (or at least
I am unable to find any documentation for) validation of the value
objects.
For example, given the following:
class Message < ActiveRecord::Base
composed_of :sender, :class_name => ''EmailAddress''
composed_of :recipient,

Not Active Record Model Validation
I have a problem with ruby on rails validation
total_book_toy.rhtml
================
<%= text_field ''book1'', ''title1'' %>
<%= text_field ''book2'', ''title2'' %>
I want to validate these text_field so user can''t insert same title.
However, I was stuck how to do it.
Or maybe you have another way how to do it.

prevent orphan records
If I have
belongs_to :user
Do I need to have
validates_presence_of :user_id
?
Does Rails validate the presence of :user_id automatically if I have
belongs_to :user?
In other words, does Rails prevent against creating orphan records that
belong to non-existent users?
Thanks.

Hello people,
I''d like to detect whether an attribute of a model has

how to do validations in non-AR classes and I cant find it any more.
Anyone have a link?
Thanks,

Blank fields getting validated
Hi,
I am not sure if this is already answered in this list. I couldn''t
find an answer. So I am posting the question.
I have multiple validations for a field. For example:
validates_presence_of :contact_email
validates_format_of :contact_email,
:with => /^([^@\s]+)@((?:[-a-z0-9]+\.)+[a-z]{2,})$/i,
:message => "is not a valid email

Dead horse: validates_associated
Regarding validates_associated...
Let''s say I have:
article belongs_to author
But for whatever reason, I want an article to also be written
anonymously and therefore not require an author. Then I have:
Article:
belongs_to :author
validates_associated :author
But I DON''T have validates_presence_of. What I want to do is validate
that an author is valid --if it is

Validation with has_many
I have two problems. I have a comment that has_many uploads. Before
saving the comment, I want to be sure that the upload(s) has passed
validation, but I also need to validate in other ways. For example, I
do not want to save the comment if there is no comment or upload. Or, I
do not want to save the comment if the image has been uploaded
previously (comparing md5s with past upload md5s

boolean db fields set to false fail validation with validates_presence_of?
I have a model that contains a :boolean field. In my view, I have a
simple select of Yes or No, which equates to true or false,
respectively. If I choose yes and save, everything works great. If I
choose no, my model fails validation as I have this set as a required
field using validates_presence_of. I have checked the log and it''s
definitely set to false, why would this fail validation?

webbrick and logger output
Hi,
When I do:
logger.info "hello?"
I would expect it to output something from the webbrick output but it doesn''t
seem to. Am I doing something wrong? or is there another way of outputting
on the webbrick output?
Thanks,

Hope this isn''t a newbie question - but I don''t seem to be able to find
relevent information elsewhere.
I am having trouble getting the following to work:

create_table "authors", :force => true do |t|
t.column "name", :string

How To Validate Boolean Form Field
Hello all.
I''ve got the following in my model:
class Individual < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of :first_name, :last_name, :street, :city,
:state, :zip
validates_acceptance_of :AZ_resident, :message => "You must be an
Arizona resident."
end
The AZ_resident field is present and defined as boolean (PostgreSQL
8.1), but validation will not occur.

Newbie validation question
I am having problems with a validation, the full model code is below.
The validate routine is attempting to see if another record with the
same artist_name, title, & catalogue_no exists in the products table. If
so, it should throw an error.
This is the validation code:
def validate
if Product.find(:all, :conditions => ["artist_name = ?, title = ?,
catalogue_no = ?",

Possible to check if form field is required?
Hi list,
is it possible to check if form field will be required when form is
submitted (through validates_presence_of or some other validates_*
method)? I could do this manually but it doesn''t seems to me very DRY.
For example, I would like to be able to dynamically add asterisk with
some helper method if city is required here:
City*: <%= text_field

validating passwords
Hey people,
I was wondering how to solve the following problem...
I have a login system which uses MD5 + salts to store my users passwords
in the database. Also I am working with profiles for my users which they
can change.
Everything goes quite okay except when we reach the change_profile bit
of the application. Because the user model has validations it performs
on the password it starts

validates_presence_of in a mixed-in module?
Anyone got any idea of how to use built-in validation methods in a
mixed-in module.
What I''ve got at the moment is each class that needs ranking methods
includes [the module] Ranking. Then the module Ranking has a bunch of
instance methods and a submodule ClassMethods. The ClassMethods in this
are mixed in to the class with self.included. So far so good.
But I want the module to

Prevent duplicate HABTM associations
Hi,
I am trying to restrict duplicate has_and_belongs_to_many associations.
I tried to find support for a association validation for duplicates but
couldn''t find anything.
I understand I could use :uniq=>true on the model association but this
would only prevent it from displaying duplicates, I want to stop
duplicate associations being inserted in the first place.
I have a vague

validates_uniqueness w scope
In a one-to-many relationship (domain has_many :categories and
category belongs_to :domain)
In the category model I use:
validates_uniqueness_of :name, :case_sensitive => false
but upon creation of a category this validation is performed on ALL
domains,
can I restrict it only to the categories of the current domain, the to
which teh category being saved belongs_to ? if yes ? how ?
thanks
