postfix and spam, I am impressed
I have had the same email address since 1997 (when microsoft stole
bob.com from me thanks to network solutions...)
In the early days I of course was free with my email and used it everwhere.
Fast forward to 2012, some 15 years later.
woof..the amount of spam sent to me has always just kept getting worse
and worse.
On my centos 5 server I just used sendmail with spamassassin and it

Logwatch reporting spamassassin messages as unmatched entries
I've recently switched to using spamassassin via a sendmail milter,
rather than using procmail to invoke it. This means that I get a number
of messages appearing in my maillog, and then being reported by logwatch
as unmatched entries.
An example of such a messages is:

Using Dovecot-auth to return error code 450 (or other 4xx) to Postfix when user is on vacation
Hello to all members.
I am using Dovecot for 5 years, but this is my first post here.
I am aware of the various autoresponder scripts for vacation autoreplies (I am using Virtual Vacation 3.1 by Mischa Peters).
I have an issue with auto-replies - it is vulnerable to spamming with forged email address.
Forging can be prevented with several Postfix settings, which I did in the past - but was forced

[info] Spamcop listing
Smtp1.song.fi and smtp2.song.fi, our list servers, seem to have gotten
listed in the bl.spamcop.net RBL. Spamcop listings are temporary and
will time out, and because of occasional major false positives (or
perhaps collateral damage?) like this I don't use it to reject mail.
Anyone who IS using Spamcop to reject mail has missed much of today's
list traffic.

spam control
Gents,
I have added the following to /etc/mail/sendmail.mc and rebuilt it
trying to control spam. I still get about 25 spam messages a day.
Is there something else that can help control spam?
Thanks
jerry

Examples of advanced data visualization
Dear R-help,
I am looking for ideas and presentations of new and advanced data visualization
methods. As an example of what I am searching for, the 'Many Eyes' pages at
http://manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com/manyeyes/
may provide a good paradigm. I would be interested even if it will not be easy
to implement such examples in R, e.g. because of the interactive nature of these

Quota, maildir, MySQL,
Hi everybody,
I am trying to work with quota. I use postfix and dovecot with a sql
backend. Below you'll find my configuration. Everything works except for
the quota part. It doesn't seem to see the quota and doesn't respond to
the sender that the client is over its quota.
versions:

dovecot-1.0.2-mysql
Thanks for the help in advance.

Histogram with colors according to factor
Given a data frame with a continuous variable and a factor. I would like to
generate a histogram of the continuous variable, where each bar is filled
with different colors according to the percentage of factor values falling
into this region of the continuous variable.
I looked into packages like 'lattice' and 'ggplot2'. Searching R-help
revealed that 'histogram' is

R patched & devel versions as portable ZIP files
I wonder if it would be possible to provide R patched and development versions
for Windows as simple zip files without using any installers.
There are more and more free and open source software projects providing
such portable versions, among them Python (since V2.5), the new MikTex 2.8,
OpenOffice 3, Firefox and Thunderbird, to name a few. Many smaller Windows
utilities do the same.

Numerical instability in new R Windows development version
I have a question concerning the new Windows toolchain for R >= 2.14.2.
When trying out my package 'pracma' on the win-builder development version
it will stop with the following error message:

Different results for tan(pi/2) and tanpi(1/2)
The same argument would hold for tan(pi/2).
I don't say the result 'NaN' is wrong,
but I thought,
tan(pi*x) and tanpi(x) should give the same result.

I have been told by the CRAN administrators that the following code generated
an error on 64-bit Fedora Linux (gcc, clang) and on Solaris machines (sparc,

Nearest Neighbor Algorithm in R -- again.
Several of the methods I use for analyzing large data sets, such as
WinGamma: determining the level of noise in data
Relief-F: estimating the influence of variables
depend on finding the k nearest neighbors of a point in a data frame or
matrix efficiently. (For large data sets it is not feasible to compute
the 'dist' matrix anyway.)

ransomware etc
Hi all,
Just out of curiosity: is there anything we can do, on the samba side,
to counter the recent ransomware attacks? (or limit the damage done)
I'm thinking like: limit the number of files per second a client
(workstation) is allowed to edit, or some other smart tricks..?
It would be nice if samba could be an extra layer of defense.
Something perhaps a vfs module could help with..?
