R-help Digest, Vol 77, Issue 9
Hi,
This may be due to several reasons. That I can think about:
1) Ensure you close *all* possibly open workbooks:
nBooks <- xl[["Workbooks"]]$Count();
for (i in seq_len(nBooks))
xl[["Workbooks"]]$item(i)$Close(SaveChanges=FALSE);
2) The excel application reference does not seem to be really released until the garbage collector runs. So this may help:
xl$Quit();

RODBC - XLSX files - dropping/clearing sheets
Hi!
I'm manipulating XLSX data using RODBC, however a limitation which appears
to be driver based is that you can't clear or drop sheets from the XLSX
files, as per the following example:
> library(RODBC)
> xlsx<-odbcDriverConnect("DRIVER=Microsoft Excel Driver (*.xls, *.xlsx,
*.xlsm, *.xlsb);DBQ=c:\\documents and settings\\desktop\\testxlsx.xlsx;
ReadOnly=False")

Read Particular Cells within Excel
Hello all,
I have a business user who generates monthly reports in MS Excel in a particular
format. The data I need is present in different portions of this excel file. Is
there a way to read different cells from a particular excel worksheet? i.e.,
cells b50:d100 in the Inputs worksheet. I am investigating odbcConnectExcel but
did not yet see such capability.
Appreciate your help.

xlsReadWrite Pro and embedding objects and files in Excel worksheets
Hans-Peter and other R developers,
How are you? Have you made any progess with embedding Url's in Excel?
Well, I have been busy thinking of more things for you to do;)
My colleagues in the lab are not R literate, and some are barely
computer literate, so I give them everything in Excel workbooks. I have
gradually evolved a system such that these workbooks have become
compendia of my

Excel *.xls files, RODBC
I gather from reading the back-issues of r-help that it should be
possible (modulo a number of caveats) to read an excel (yuck!) file
into R using RODBC. I have obtained and installed ODBC and the RODBC
package, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to go about
it. Can anyone give me a simple recipe?
I have an excel file on cdrom, say:
/mnt/cdrom/melvin.xls
I have started R and loaded

Error when writing to Excel files using the packages xlsx and xlsx2
Dear group,
I am working on a rather big project where the output data frames have
dimensions of 3000 x 15 or greater. We are using xlsx and xlsx2 to write the
data.frames to Excel sheets.
Since recently we get the following error, when trying to write the data
frames to the excel sheets:
Error in ls(envir = envir, all.names = private) :
invalid 'envir' argument
We figured out that

export tables to excel files on multiple sheets with titles for each table
Hello R-users,
Checking the archives, I recently came across this topic:
"export tables to Excel files"
and the following interesting references have been proposed:

behaviour of xls2sep when running read.xls (package gdata) sinceupgrade of R
Hello eveRybody (and probably special regards to Gabor G....),
I recently upgraded from R-2.9.2-win32 to R-10.1.0-win32, and I'm using
Windows XP Professional 2002 with service pack 3 on a PC with IntelCore
Duo CPU@ 3.00 GHz.
Last time I used it (some weeks ago, before upgrading), one of my
scripts (including the two lines cited below) used to run OK.
When I ran it yesterday evening (after

Import range of cells from Excel
Dear all,
I would like to import a range of cells (e.g. F10:K234) from an Excel
worksheet to R. I have looked for documentation on RODBC and RDCOMClient but
I was not able to find enough information to solve my problem and all the
examples I have seen were dealing with an entire worksheet, not a range of
cells.
Thanks,

Importing multiple worksheets from one Excle/ csv file into R
Dear R experts,
I am trying to import some data from some Excle files into R. My Excle file
contains about 50 sheets.
One solution I can think about is to convert my Excle file into csv file
first and then load data into R using 'read.csv'.
But it seems to me that 'read.csv' only supports reading one sheet (or 'one
file') each time, so that seems I have to create 50 csv

Data separated by spaces, getting data into R using field lengths
I have a text file similar to this (separated by spaces):
x <- "DF12 This is an example 1 This
DF12 This is an 1232 This is
DF14 This is 12334 This is an
DF15 This 23 This is an example
"
and I know the field lengths of each variable (there is 5 variables in
this data set), which are:
varlength <- c(2, 2, 18, 5, 18)
How can I import this kind of data into R, using the varlength

How to get names of a list into df:s?
R users,
I have a simple lapply question.
g <- list(a=1:3, b=4:6, c=7:9)
g <- lapply(g, function(x) as.data.frame(x))
lapply(g, function(x) cbind(x, var1 = rep(names(g), each=nrow(x))[1:nrow(x)]))
I get
$a
x var1
1 1 a
2 2 a
3 3 a
$b
x var1
1 4 a
2 5 a
3 6 a
$c
x var1
1 7 a
2 8 a
3 9 a
And I would like to have
$a
x var1
1 1 a
2 2 a
3 3 a
