Converting strings with internal delimiters into lists
Hi UserRs,
I know that there has to be an easy way to do this in
R (probably easy enough that once someone clues me in
I'll smack myself on the forehead for not figuring it
out myself), but my searches on my own have not
yielded any hints.
I have many fields in my dataset that participants
entered as "free lists" - i.e., the field constitutes
a varying number of names each

force group parameter problem
Hello. I'm having some trouble with the force group parameter in the
smb.conf file. I'm running samba 2.2.8a on RedHat 9.
The smb.conf file has the following entries:
[sales]
comment = Sales Share
path = /sales
public = no
writable = yes
create mask = 0770
directory mask = 0770

tapply output
Hello, I am having trouble getting the output from the tapply function
formatted so that it can be made into a nice table. Below is my question
written in R code. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you. Geoff

Non linear regression using Levenberg-Marquardt method
Hello,
I want to fit some non linear models with the Levenberg-Marquardt
algorithm. It doesn''t seem to exist any function to do this in R ( well,
maybe one does, but I''m a new user, and the only documentation I have is
"An introduction to R").
I''d like to know if this function exists, maybe throught an additionnal
package.
I''d also like to know if if

Two foreign keys on the same column?
Let''s say I have three hypothetical MySQL tables:
? people, with columns id, gender, and source_id
belongs_to :boys and :girls
? boys, with columns id and name
has_many :people
? girls, with columns id and name
has_many :people
The gender column in people specifies which of the two source tables the
source_id refers to. For example, if we have values:
1, boy, 1
in people,

A slight trap in read.table/read.csv.
I had occasion recently to read in a one-line *.csv file that
looked like:
"CandidateName","NSN","Ethnicity","dob","gender"
"Smith, Mary Jane",111222333,"E","2/25/1989","F"
That "F" (for female) in the last field got transformed to
FALSE. Apparently read.csv (and hence read.table) are inferring

Optimize for loop / find last record for each person
I want to find the last record for each person_id in a data frame
(from a SQL database) ordered by date. Is there a better way than
this for loop?
for (i in 2:length(history[,1])) {
if (history[i, "person_id"] == history[i - 1, "person_id"])
history[i, "order"] = history[i - 1, "order"] + 1 # same person

Question on "read only" behavior in smb.conf
Hi All,
I've built Samba v2.2.8a on a RedHat 7.2 system and it seems to work ok.
However
I cannot understand the "read only" parameter in the following situation:
smb.conf file:
-------------------
[global]
security=user
encrypt passwords=yes
[foo]
path=/tmp/foo
read only=yes
The owner&mode of /tmp/foo is:
------------------------------------------
% ls -ld

inquiry about anova and ancova
Dear R users,
I have a rather knotty analysis problem and I was hoping that
someone on this list would be able to help. I was advised to try this list
by a colleague who uses R but it is a statistical inquiry not about how to
use R.
In brief I have a 3x2 anova, 2 tasks under 3 conditions, within subjects. I
also took a variety of personality measures that might influence the results
under the

Column renaming
Dear all,
Is there a less cumbersome way to rename a column by name (as opposed
to index) than --
names( X)[ names[ X] == "bob"]<-"sue"
?
A semi-related question: how does one get the index of a column by
name, something along the lines of col.index( X, "sue") ?

Drive namings...
Just wondering if there is a way to get drive namings to change according
to who's logged into the network.
ie.
'bob' logs into windows networking and gets...
E: 'bob' on server kiwi.
Now if 'sue' logs into windows networking on the same pc she gets...
E: 'bob' on server kiwi.
But E: contains sue's stuff. So is there a way into making 'sue'
