Associative arrays
I just started playing with rails this week and am working on porting our
existing website to rails
in our navigation we have a list that has the days of the week that link to
the articles for those days.
this seems to be working when I had it in the template it would give me the
array I was looking for so I decided to move it to the helper so that I
could use it on all my templates.

How do I reset rails in production mode on DreamHost?
Hello!
I am testing rails on DreamHost.
I believe it''s running on apache.
In development mode, it ran very slowly.
So I changed it into production mode and switched to fcgi.
It''s very fast now.
But the problem is that if I add actions to a controller, it''s not
applied.
I know that in production mode, I need to restart web server.
But I don''t control the web

Rails, FCGI, DreamHost, and endless frustrations
Hi all!
I''m trying to deploy an application out to a subdomain at dreamhost. I am
getting the dreaded "Rails application failed to start properly" error. The
logs for my app are empty. In the DreamHost FTP app, when I look in the
error.log file (I''m guessing this the Apache error log file) I see the
following for each of my attempts:

Versions Compatibility and RAILS_GEM_VERSION
Is there any problem with versions compatibility?
A project I started with 1.1.2 cannot run with 1.1.4.
Dreamhost recently updated their rails from 1.1.2 to 1.1.5 and 1.1.6.
Needless to say I got "Application Error". However when I changed
RAILS_GEM_VERSION to either 1.1.5 or 1.1.6, it works. (Haven''t made a
thorough checking though.)
Here it seems there is no

Dreamhost FastCGI: incomplete headers (0 bytes) errors
Sorry to trouble the list with another Dreamhost problem, but looking
through the archives I see nothing that can solve my problem.
I have installed my app as per
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Ruby_on_Rails#Quick_Start_Guide_August_2006
with a symbolic link from my_domain.tld in ~/ to
~/apps/residence/public/
I get the Rails welcome screen. I have uploaded my app directory etc,

Two developers, one on unix and one on windows
Hello all,
An interesting problem, I am developing on Windows, another developer is
using Unix, and our app and svn repository are running on a Linux box.
We need an easy way to not keep breaking our app and each others
development environs when we check in the code. The piece in question is
the dispatch.fcgi. The path to ruby is (obviously) different in Windows
and Unix. Has anyone run into

Capistrano Deployment on Dreamhost
I''m having trouble getting Capistrano to work on Dreamhost. I seem to be
having problems logging in, but I can ssh fine to my dreamhost server
from this machine. This doesn''t seem like a dreamhost specific thing to
me, but I''m kind of stuck.
Here''s the exception I get from "cap setup":

Rails app won''t run on Dreamhost - "incomplet headers" error
Can anyone provide some expert debugging help here? What''s the first
step to take to see what the issue is here?
I have no errors in the rails app''s log files. The only errors I have
are those provided by apache and they are:
''FastCGI: Incomplete headers (0) bytes received from server''
I''ve tried editing the shebang line, removing line feeds, but

FastCGI processes sometimes ''hang''
I am running a RoR application on Apache 1.3/RedHat 7.3/MySQL 3.1.23
(Old versions I know, but upgrading to latest versions are not practical
for a number of reasons). There are 5 RoR FastCGI processes configured
using FastCgiServer.
What I am finding is that, after a while, some of the FastCGI processes
seem to ''hang''. They no longer process requests, and the only way to

FastCGI without ScriptAlias
Hi,
I made some experiments with the sample blog application, my index.fcgi
file contains the following:
require ''camping/fastcgi''
Camping::Models::Base.establish_connection(
:adapter => ''sqlite3'',
:database => ''database/camping.db''
)
Camping::FastCGI.serve(''blog.rb'')
Without ScriptAlias the application works fine,

Save using Update
Hi,
I want to update an existing row in table "items" where items.id == 10
I tried this:
item = Item.new
item.f1 = ...
item.f2 = ...
...
item.id = 10
item.save
I got an error
Duplicate entry ... for key 10 : INSERT INTO items ...
How do I make item.save to use UPDATE instead of INSERT?

Reload an application without restarting the Server?
Hi, I would like to set up a "shared hosting"-like rails environment on
a linux (+Apache1.3 +FastCGI +MySQL) machine. As we all know, rails
provides support for different environments.
Now I would like to enable my "users" to switch individual applications
between development and production mode. In theory, all they have to do
is to add

Avoiding killall
When I started Rails Development, I needed to use ''killall -g
dispatch.fcgi'' whenever I made a change to a Model to see the change on
my website. Now it seems I need to do this to see any change to the
Controller as well.
Any ideas of what I am doing wrong???

rails threads / contexts / fastcgi - can someone explain ???
Hi,
Would someone be able to explain how ruby class/object contexts work
from the point of view of a deployed rails application using FASTCGI and
noting there are multiple Ruby processes running (say on dreamhost for
example). Some questions to help clarify what I''m trying to understand:
a) how do incoming URL requests get spread across the multiple Ruby
processes (let''s

Experience with ferret on Dreamhost ?
Does anybody have experience with running ferret on dreamhost ?
My app is running ok until I install the acts_as_ferret plugin, at which
point I get "Rails application failed to start properly" errors. I''ve
used script/console to confirm that I can require ''ferret'' and make a
new Index object . Everything appears to be ok in that respect.

Rails, FCGI, Dreamhost
Is anybody getting acceptable performance with a Rails application on
Dreamhost? By this, I mean response times no greater than 3 seconds, and
no large numbers of FCGI processes that you have to kill manually.
If so, how?
I''ve ended up running a constant ping script (once every ten minutes),
and still have to kill some number of excess dispatch.fcgi processes
every day.
Along with
