print() to file?
I'd like to write some objects (eg arrays) to a log file. cat() flattens them out. I'd like them formatted as in 'print' but print only writes to stdout. Is there a simple way to achieve this result? array slice notation?
Suppose I have an n-diml array A and I want to extract the first "row" -- ie all elements A[1, ...] Interactively if I know 'n' I can write A[1,,,,,] with (n-1) commas. How do I do the same more generally, eg in a script? (I can think of doing this by converting A to a vector then extracting the approp elements then reshaping it to an array, but I wonder if there isn't a

What is the simplest way to extract a matched subexpression? omit empty cells in crosstab?
Perhaps this is a common question but I haven't been able to find the answer. I have data with many factors, each taking many values. However, only relatively few combinations appear in the data, ie have nonzero counts, in other words the resulting table is sparse. Say we have 10 factors each with 10 levels. The result of table() would exceed the memory space (on a 32bit machine). Is there

Minimize a plot window
Is it possible to start a X11() device in a minimized state? I have many windows, each with useful data, which clutter the screen. Having each window minimize upon creation would help. more on Diablo II (wierd problem)
Ok, I do have Diablo II working, mostly. At the moment, it only works under TWM (not fvwm which is what I normally use) and only in -win mode. The problem is that the first time that my mouse leaves the diablo window, diablo iconifies. Not a major issue, I just have to make sure that it's before I start playing. HOWEVER, after it's de-iconified, the keyboard get's somewhat screwy. I

When operating in daemon mode, will rsync check to see which file is newer and decide which direction to transfer based on that? Example, We have 2 terminal servers, A and B. searching help for partial matches
The situation is that I know there is a function and know approximately what the name is, and want to find the exact name. Is there a way of searching for near-matches (similar to unix apropos). For example, I know there is a function called something like allequal (or allequals or AllEquals or...). But ?allequal, etc, return nothing, only if I remember the name can I get help via ?all.equal.

R on X11 under Linux (newbie)
I just installed R on my 64 bit SUSE Linux system -- I compiled with the default x windows support on.. This may be a newbie question (apologies in advance)-- but how does this show up in X? I have SSH'd in to my box and set my display -- I can run xcalc OK -- but when I hit the R binary it just goes to the command line -- if does not give me an x-window. I suspect I need another

vectorizing a function
I'm sure I'm missing something obvious but I'm not seeing how to simply "vectorize" a function of two or more variables. Say I have f <- function(x,y) if (x>0) y else -y Now I have vectors x and y of equal length and I'd like to apply f element-wise. I.e. conceptually z <- f(x,y) where x, y, z are vectors of the same length Some magic involving apply?

I'm sure I can put this together from the various 'apply's and split, but I wonder if anyone has a quick incantation: E.g. I'm trying to build up a list of data.frames by "appending" one by one. If x,y,z are data.frames, I can do somelist <- list(x, y, z) (or even somelist <- list(x=x, y=y, z=z) to get names) But if I start with somelist <- list(x,y) and now want to go from this to list(x,y,z) I'm stuck. Keep on losing communication: Raspberry Pi, CyberPower PR1500LCD
