Problems with PostScript Encoding
Hello all,
I suspect my problem is not new: I am having difficulty getting an alpha
character to print in a PostScript file made by R graphics (in my legend).
At first, I figured out how to actually get the character on the screen;
however, when I saved the graphic to a PostScript file the alpha character
was replaced by "..".
Obviously, something is not working when encoding.

embedding fonts in eps files
Hi,
I have to make eps files with fonts embedded.
I use the following postscript command:
postscript("fig3a.eps", width = 5.2756, height = 7.27, pointsize =
7,horizontal = FALSE, onefile = FALSE, paper = "special",family =
"Times")
plot(...)
dev.off()
Are fonts automatically embedded in this way?
How can I see that?
If not, how to do it?
regards, Rudi.

postscript printer breaking up long strings
For a long string in an axis title, or main title the postscript device
breaks apart the long strings into smaller strings. For example,
> postscript('linebreaktest.eps')
> plot(1,xlab='aReallyLongStringToSeeHowItBreaks',ylab='aReallyLongStringToSeeHowItBreaks')
> for(i in c(.6,1,1.4))text(i,i,'aReallyLongStringToSeeHowItBreaks')
> dev.off()

overlay of two sets of boxplots
Hello,
I am new to R and currently have the following problem:
I have successfully loaded my data in R which consists of two numeric columns (LI_F and female) and one character column (Strain). So far I can plot two different set of boxplots for each of the numeric columns plotted by the groups of the character column and the commands look like that:
boxplot(LI_F~Strain, ylab="LI_F",

Open SSH configuration query
Hi,
I have downloaded openssh(http://www.openssh.com/) on my Windows host.
Just wanted to know if openssh allows executing a batch script on Windows host.
Batch script contains mapping of shares which is required for my scripts.
My command run from hpux:
$ ssh <windows server> myscript
The myscript requires shares to be mapped on login via

function to set log(0)=0 not working on tables or vectors
There must be a very basic thing I am not getting...
I'm working with some entropy functions and the convention is to use
log(0)=0.
So I wrote a function:
llog<-function(x){
if (x ==0) 0 else log(x)
}
which seems to work fine for individual numbers e.g.
>llog(0/2)
[1] 0
but if I try whole vectors or tables:
p<-c(4,3,1,0)
q<-c(2,2,2,2)
llog(p/q)
I get this:
[1] 0.6931472

axis and tick widths decoupled (especially in rugs!)
Hi!
(a complete newby, but will not give up easily!)
I was wondering if there is any way to decouple the axis and tick mark
widths? As I understand they are both controlled by the lwd setting, and
cannot be controlled independently? For example I might want to create major
and minor ticks, which I now know how to do by superimposing two axes with
different at settings, but what if I also wanted

On PostScript
I have been attempting to create a custom fax cover sheet for a hylafax
web front end called avantfax. It requires as input an encapsulated
postscript file conaining the glyph definitions and the text to be

XXXX-from-variable.
I have been trying to create a valid eps file using a varitiy of methods
with no great succes. However, I ahve

problems while correlating values
Hi,
I am a newbie to the world of R.
I have a data converted in csv format. Few cells in
some of the rows of the data are blank ( in the sense
that there is no value available for the particular
experiment). When i try to open the file in R. I get
an warning message.
The specific warning message i get is
{Warning message:

My data more or less looks like this

plotting functions of chi square
Hi! This is going to be a real newbie question, but I can't figure it out.
I'm trying to plot densities of various functions of chi-square. A simple
chi-square plot I can do with dchisq(). But e.g. chi.sq/degrees of freedom I
only know how to do using density(rchisq()/df). For example:
plot(1, type="n", xlab="", ylab="", xlim=c(0,2), ylim=c(0,7))

Strange p-level for the fixed effect with lme function
Hello,
I ran two lme analyses and got expected results. However, I saw
something suspicious regarding p-level for fixed effect. Models are the
same, only experimental designs differ and, of course, subjects. I am
aware that I could done nesting Subjects within Experiments, but it is
expected to have much slower RT (reaction time) in the second
experiment, since the task is more complex, so it

identical values not so identical? newbie help please!
Hi there!
I'm not sure I can create a minimal example of my problem, so I'm linking to
a minimal .RData file that has only two objects: obs and exp, each is a 6x9
matrix. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10364753/test.RData link to dropbox file
(I hope this is acceptable mailing list etiquette!)
Here's what happens:
> obs[1, 1]

> exp[1, 1]
[1] 118
> obs[1, 1]-exp[1, 1]

nlminb( ) : one compartment open PK model
All,
I have been able to successfully use the optim( ) function with
"L-BFGS-B" to find reasonable parameters for a one-compartment
open pharmacokinetic model. My loss function in this case was
squared error, and I made no assumptions about the distribution
of the plasma values. The model appeared to fit pretty well.
Out of curiosity, I decided to try to use nlminb( ) applied to

xfig device
Hi, I am VERY interested in getting the xfig driver so that I can edit
graphical output from R. Searching through the mail archives and reading
documentation isn't helping. Is there or isn't there a working driver for
this purpose. How can I get it? I tried looking at the development version
of the tarballs, but I didn't find anything that looked promising in there.
Also, does

[LLVMdev] Detecting counted loops
I need to be able to detect a well-behaved loop. (i.e one where exp1
assigns a value to an int i, exp2 compares i with a loop constant,
exp3 adjusts i by a loop constant, and the inner block has no
assignments to i.)
I need this because in Sun's Java VM garbage collection only takes
place at safepoints, so a potentially unbounded loop must call
safepoint() some time. However, safepoints are

After renaming a file, I found the file duplicated.
Following is my test scenario.
