Efficiently create dummy
What's the neat way to create a dummy from a list?
The code below is not replicable, but hopefully self-explanatory...
d$treatment<-rep(1,length(d))
notreat<-c("AR", "DE", "MS", "NY", "TN", "AK", "LA", "MD", "NC", "OK", "UT", "VA")

Recursive function calls
My apologies, I know that this is not a new problem, but I'm not sure how
to find the answer
I want to recursively loop over an object and trim trailing white space.
When I use this function on a list of data.frame I get output like this:
[1] "c(\" many spaces \", \" many spaces \")" "c(\" many spaces
\", \" many spaces

function similar to "get" that works for both an object, and elements of an object?
#Is there a single function similar to "get" that works for both an object, and elements of an object ?
#(I want the function to be able to return objects, and/or the deeper elements of an object.)
#(i.e. elements of a dataframe and/or list)?
#e.g.
tempdf = data.frame(a=c(4,5,6) , b=c(10,11,12) )
templist= list(x=tempdf, y=c(1,2))
get('tempdf') #works as desired

lower and upper limits in integrate as vectors
Dear R useRs,
i try to integrate the following function for many values
"integrand" <- function(z)
{
return(z * z)
}
i do this with a for-loop
for(i in 2:4)
{
z <- integrate(integrand, i-1, i)$value
cat("z", z, "\n")
}
to speed up the computation for many values i tried vectors
in integrate to do this.

lm() of one matrix against another
Hello R list,
I have two matrices of identical dimensions, and I want to fit a
straight line for each pair of columns and plot the resulting lines.
I got it to work with a for loop, but there must be a better way,
> n<-5
> N<-10
>
> data.x<-matrix(1:(n*N),ncol=n)
> data.y<-matrix(1:(n*N) + rnorm(n*N,sd=1),ncol=n)

how to fill the area under the density line with semitransparent colors
Dear R-listers,
I have created a plot to display the density lines for the same
variable by different entities. Now, I want to fill the area under the
density lines with semitransparent colors.
Though I have checked that in web-searching and book-reading, I still
do not perform that.
Could anyone please give me any helps or advice? Thank you in advance.
The data and code I used listed below:

Multi-line texts in plots
I am running a simulation many times changing one parameter each time and recording the outcome.
I have to produce a plot to make a sense of the bunch of numbers I get from every run.
My problem is to insert a multi-line text to keep track of which result correspond to which parameter values.
A legend does not work in this case because I will plot 2 variables and the corresponding experimental

Determining cause of error?
This is both a specific question and a general one. First, I am running 'fitdistr' from library(MASS) and I get the following:
Error in fitdistr(templist, "weibull") : optimization failed
What is the cause of the error? How can I tell? Can I just catch this error, report it and move to the next set of data (eat the exception)?
Thank you.

strange file sizes in log
Hello everyone,
I'm getting strange module sizes in the logs. (2.6.9)
This is the command:
rsync -anr --delete --omit-dir-times --stats -e "ssh -i access.key -l
pluto -p 22" --files-from=config\templist "/cygdrive/C/"
sv_rs@192.168.10.49::Accounts
After updating all the files on the "Accounts" module, the size is reported
correctly on the receiver log file

Apply as.factor (or as.numeric etc) to multiple columns
Hi R-helpers,
I have a dataframe with 60columns and I would like to convert several
columns to factor, others to numeric, and yet others to dates. Rather
than having 60 lines like this:
data$Var1<-as.factor(data$Var1)
I wonder if it's possible to write one line of code (per data type,
e.g. factor) that would apply a function (e.g., as.factor) to several
(non-contiguous) columns. So, I

plyr package: passing further arguments fail
Dear list and Hadley,
The new plyr package seems to provide a clean and consistent way to apply a function on several arguments. However, I don't understand why the following example does not work like the standard mapply,
library(plyr)
df <- data.frame(a=1:10 , b=1:10)
foo1 <- function(a, b, cc=0, d=0){
a + b + cc + d
}
mdply(df, foo1, cc=1) # fine
mdply(df, foo1, d=1) #

quasi-random sequences
Dear list useRs,
I have to generate a random set of coordinates (x,y) in [-1 ; 1]^2
for say, N points. At each of these points is drawn a circle (later

> sizes<-rnorm(N, mean = 0 , sd= 1)

Multiple lattice plots on a page: aligning x-axes vertically
Dear R-help,
I am creating a two lattice plots (a densityplot() and xyplot()) that
have the same x-axes and then 'printing' them onto the same page, one
above the other (see end of email for an example to generate the graph).
With different labels on the y-axis for each plot the left spacing is
different, and the x-axes don't align vertically. Although I can
manually modify the

I have a monthly economies series and all I really need is to see a less jagged line when I plot it.

s <- smooth.spline(d.zoo$Y, spar = 0.2)

write list to ascii
Dear all,
apologies for this (perhaps recurrent) question but I did not found a question when searching mailing lists.
How to write a list of a simple kind, e.g.:
abc <- list(one=(1:2), two=(1:5))
# to a file? I understand that write() & co. cannot work but when I try
sink("aa.txt", append=T, split=T)
abc

I think I'm nearly there in writing R code which will read in files with two variable parts to the file name and then assigning these file names to objects, which also have two variable parts. I have got the code running without encountering errors, however, I receive 50+ of the same warnings:

speedup remains 1
Hi List,
I'm observing a strange problem on 2.6.9 (no opportunity to upgrade on both ends yet).
Receiver is linux, sender is cygwin.
I transferred a 6GB file (an MS SQL .bak file) physically from one site to the other, in order to get the first "backup" done.
In the meantime, the sender generated a new file, which I know for a fact to be very similar to the manually transferred
