For my "Diplom" I implemented convex peeling in C (some time ago), using an O(n log(n)) algorithm, so it probably will prove relatively easy to use that code for a R-function. Hi all, I wrote a function that actually does what I want it to do, but it tends to be very slow for large amount of data. On my computer it takes 5.37 seconds for 16000 data points and 21.95 seconds for 32000 data points. As my real data consists of 18000000 data points it would take ages to use the function as it is now. Could someone help me to speed up the calculation? Thank you, Tonja

In R's maptools package, is there a built-in function to test if a given point is "inside" a given polygon on the map? The map was loaded from an ESRI Shapefile. Since I have a point theme with many points, some of them may clump together. the problems here are: 1. how to find clumps in a point theme? 2. the convex-hull extension I found only deal with all the points in a theme at each time? how to make each convex hull around each point clump automatically?
