create many variables at one time~
I need to create 100 variable ,whose name is id.1,id.2~~~~id.100
then I need to let a vector say id<-c(id.1,id.2....id.100)
any easy way to do this?
thanks a lot~

linear model in the repeated data type~
here is the data:
y<-c(5,2,3,7,9,0,1,4,5)
id<-c(1,1,6,6,7,8,15,15,19)
t<-c(50,56,50,56,50,50,50,60,50)
table1<-data.frame(y,id,t)//longitudinal data
what I want to do is to use the linear model for each id ,then get the
estimate value,like:
fit1<-lm(y~t,data=table1,subset=(id==1))
but ,you can see the variable "id" is quite irregular,they are not arranaged

multiple multiplication in R
hi: just a very simple quesion,how to do multiple multiplication in R
x<-c(1,2,3,4,5,6)
how to get 1*2*3*4*5*6?
I checked the Arithmetic Operators in R,but did not found the operators
for this function,anyway can do this except the loop?

try to find the MLE of a function
Hi everyone:
I have a density function f(x|theta)=theta*x^(theta-1),where
0<x<1,0<theta<infinite
I want to pratice on R to find the MLE of this function,here is my code:
x <- (0:10)/10
f<-function(theta) prod(theta*x^(theta-1))
mle(f)
and r gave me :Error in eval(expr, envir, enclos) : argument is missing,

Cholesky Decomposition in R
Hi everyone:
I try to use r to do the Cholesky Decomposition,which is A=LDL',so far I
only found how to decomposite A in to LL' by using chol(A),the function
Cholesky(A) doesnt work,any one know other command to decomposte A in to
LDL'
My r code is:
library(Matrix)
A=matrix(c(1,1,1,1,5,5,1,5,14),nrow=3)

ans[nas] <- NA in 'ifelse' (was: ifelse() woes ... can we agree on a ifelse2() ?)
Removal of
ans[nas] <- NA
from the code of function 'ifelse' in R is not committed (yet). Why?

ifelse(is.na), with function inside
Hi,
I have a vector a=c(NA, 3, 4, 4, NA, NA, 3) and I would like to use is.na(a)
function to get a vector like this:
wy=(1,2,2,2,1,1,2) - you know, this vector create 1 or 2 depends on value in
vector "a"
This is my short code but something is wrong and I don't know what...
for (i in 1:7){
a=c( NA, 3, 4, 4, NA, NA, 3)
fun1=function(x){
x=1
print(x)
}
fun2=function(x){

how to extract a specific group of data from a table?
a table with three varialbe:treatment

I want all response y with treatment=low and size=large,
I try to write as :
treatment<-c("low","low","high","high")
size<-c("small","large","small","large")
y<-c(1,2,4,5)

using ifelse to remove NA's from specific columns of a data frame containing strings and numbers
Hi everyone,
I have a data frame one of whose columns is a character vector and the rest
are numeric, and in debugging a script, I noticed that an ifelse call seems
to be coercing the character column to a numeric column, and producing
unintended values as a result. Roughly, here's what I tried to do:
df: a data frame with, say, the first column as a character column and the

ifelse
When I run this code from an R-script:
ddd = 360 + round ( atan2(-u,-v) / d2r )
print(class(ddd))
print(ddd)
ifelse ( ddd>360, ddd-360, ddd )
print(ddd)
I get this output:
[1] "numeric"
[1] 461 213 238 249 251
[1] 461 213 238 249 251
Why does ifelse not change the 461 to 101?
I recreated the vector ddd and ran the same ifelse

Use 2 "ifelse" to sort data
Dear R users,
I have a question how to use 2 "ifelse" to sort my data. Such as
from 11 to 20 assign to A; 6 to 10 assign to B, and the rest of them assign
to C
a<-1:20
tt<-ifelse(a>10, "A",no=ifelse( 5< a <=10, "B", "C"))
Many Thanks

ifelse() woes ... can we agree on a ifelse2() ?
Related to the length of 'ifelse' result, I want to say that "example of different return modes" in ?ifelse led me to perceive a wrong thing in the past.
## example of different return modes:
yes <- 1:3
no <- pi^(0:3)
typeof(ifelse(NA, yes, no)) # logical
typeof(ifelse(TRUE, yes, no)) # integer
typeof(ifelse(FALSE, yes, no)) # double

ifelse logic and multiple assignments
I'm a fairly new R user and while I have a solution to my problem I'm
wondering if there is a better one.
In SAS it's common to use if/then logic along with a "do" statement to
make several things happen. While I could do the same thing in R
using a "for" loop, and "if" and {}, I've read that loops are less
common in R and I wonder if I'm doing

ifelse behaviour
Hi!
I'm puzzled by the return value of ifelse
consider
x<-integer(0)
ifelse(is(x, "character"), paste(x), x)
[1] NA
whereas
if (is(x, "character")) return(paste(x)) else x
[1] integer(0)
or
x<-integer(1)
ifelse(is(x, "character"), paste(x), x)
[1] 0
work as I had anticipated. Is this correct behaviour?

Proposed speedup of ifelse
I propose a patch to ifelse that leverages anyNA(test) to achieve an
improvement in performance. For a test vector of length 10, the change
nearly halves the time taken and for a test of length 1 million, there
is a tenfold increase in speed. Even for small vectors, the
distributions of timings between the old and the proposed ifelse do
not intersect.
The patch does not intend to change the

equivalent of ifelse
Hi,
Is there any equivalent for ifelse (except if (cond) expr1 else expr2) which takes an atomic element as argument but returns vector since ifelse returns an object of the same length as its argument?
x = c(1,2,3)
y = c(4,5,6,7)
z = 3
ifelse(z <= 3,x,y)
would return x and not 1
thanks
