function to generate weights for lm?
Hi, I would like to use a weighted lm model to reduce heteroscendasticity. I am wondering if the only way to generate the weights in R is through the laborious process of trial and error by hand. Does anyone know if R has a function that would automatically generate the weights need for lm? Thanks, -- Tom [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Which gls models to use?
Hi, I need to correct for ar(1) behavior of my residuals of my model. I noticed that there are multiple gls models in R. I am wondering if anyone has experience in choosing between gls models. For example, how should one decide whether to use lm.gls in MASS, or gls in nlme for correcting ar(1)? Does anyone have a preference? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks, -- Tom [[alternative HTML

Linear model
I want to know how accurate are the p-values when you do linear regression in R? I was looking at the variable x3 and the t=10.843 and the corresponding p-value=2e-16 which is the same p-value for the intercept where the t-value for the intercept is 48.402. I tried to calculate the p-value in R and I got 0 x<-2*(1-pt(10.843,2838)) > x [1] 0 > G<-lm(y~x1+x2+x3+x4+x5) >

anova planned comparisons/contrasts
Hi, I'm trying to figure out how anova works in R by translating the examples in Sokal And Rohlf's (1995 3rd edition) Biometry. I've hit a snag with planned comparisons, their box 9.4 and section 9.6. It's a basic anova design: treatment <- factor(rep(c("control", "glucose", "fructose", "gluc+fruct",

breaking a loop in R
Hi All, I was wondering if there is anything that breaks a loop in R. For example, For (k in 1:100) For ( i in 1:10){ If ( condition ){ Break the inner loop } } } In the above case, if the program runs the if statement, then I want the inner loop for (i in 1:10) to stop looping and skip the rest of the program. problem with the precision of numbers

removing random effect from nlme or using varPower() in nls
Hello, I've been fitting a random effects model using nlme to some data, but I am discovering that the variation in my random effect is very small. As a result, I would like to replace it as a fixed effect (i.e. essentially fit the same model but with no random effect). As I understand it I could do this using nls(), but I'm using a number of options such as weights = varPower()
