Convert Character to Date
Hello, I have a date in the format Year-Month Name (e.g. 1990-January) and R classes it as a character. I want to convert this character into a date format, but when I try as.Date(1990-January, "%Y-%B"), I get back NA. The function strptime also gives me NA back. Thanks. speeding read.table
R 2.15.1 OS X Colleagues, I am reading a 1 GB file into R using read.table. The file consists of 100 tables, each of which is headed by two lines of characters. The first of these lines is: TABLE NO. 1 The second is a list of column headers. For example: TABLE NO. 1 COL1 COL2 COL3 COL4 COL5 COL6 COL7 COL8 COL9 COL10

Identifying special characters in a text file
Colleagues R 2.10.1 on a Mac I read in textfiles using readLines, then I process those files, then I use R to execute another program. Occasionally those files contain characters other than letter / numbers / routine punctuation marks. For example, a bullet (option-8 on a Mac) triggers the problem. Although R can read and process those characters, the other program cannot so I would like to

complete newbie Q
Hi all I'm a programmer at the psychology dept, and last week, I was asked to write an application to analyze some result data from CO2 measurement experiments. I don't want to reinvent the wheel, so before I start custom coding in C, I'd though to look around a bit and bumped into R on freshmeat. basically, it is a 2-column data sheet, with timings on col1 and CO2 value on col2.

[Hmisc] latex() with ctable=T inserting unwanted empty line in .tex file when used on summary.formula(method="reverse") object
Dear useRs, When I'm using Hmisc's latex() function with ctable=TRUE on a summary.formula with method="reverse" object and saving in a .tex file, the latter contains an unwanted empty line which makes compilation fail. Here is a brief example : library(Hmisc) test <- data.frame(a=sample(1:30,10),b=sample(c("good","bad","ugly"),10,replace=T))

aggregate(...) with multiple functions
hi all - i'm just wondering what sort of code people write to essentially performa an aggregate call, but with different functions being applied to the various columns. for example, if i have a data frame x and would like to marginalize by a factor f for the rows, but apply mean() to col1 and median() to col2. if i wanted to apply mean() to both columns, i would call: aggregate(x, list(f),

Odd characters at beginning of file
I'm use RPostgreSQL to access data on a Postgres server. I would like to keep my SQL statements in external files, as they're easier to write and debug in pgAdmin, then I use readLines to bring them into R and feed to dbGetQuery. Here's the problem. When I create a SQL script with pgAdmin, then load it in R, the ensuing script fails when I feed it to dbGetQuery. When I inspect the

Converting a line by line program into an array to perform summary stats
I am trying to turn several lines of information into a variable. I used the filx function to input my file then the readlines to qualify what I want. Essentially I have data in a file every 10 minutes through a day for several years down a column: date time value 9/28/10 02:00 13 9/28/10 02:10 15 9/28/10 02:20 12 9/28/10 02:30 11 etc. I then use if statements to segment the day

Please Help me!
Hi, R-users, I have a problem: Because there are few files which can't be readed into R completely, so on the following subsequence programme, I use write.table, which creates the "NA" files for those incomplete files autimatically. I don't want those NA files. My programes formats looks like: name_c<-Sys.glob("C:/Documents and Settings/lma/My

Add header line to large text file
All, I have a 30 million record text file without header information. I would like to add a header to this file without reading it first. Is this possible? The code below does what I want except that the readLines portion takes quite a long time. Is there a way around reading the lines? I'm working on Windows XP. Zev input<-readLines("c:/junk/forR.csv")

extract tables as data.frames from HTML source
Hi, I wonder whether there is any convenient function (or package) to extract tables from a HTML page? e.g. from http://www.google.com/finance/historical?q=SHE:002251 I know we can readLines('URL'), gsub('<td>...', '...', source), ... and at last get the numbers; I'm writing to ask whether someone has already contributed a more general function (with the package

readLines with space-delimiter?
Hi, I am reading a large space-delimited text file into R (41 columns and many rows) and need to do run each row's values through another R object and then write to another text file. So, far using readLines and writeLines seems to be the best bet. I've gotten the data exchange working except each row is read in as one 'chunk', meaning the row has all values between two quotes

re ading tokens
Greetings, I am not familiar with processing text in R. Can someone tell me how to read each line of words as separate elements in a list? FE, I would like to turn: word1 word2 word3 word2 word4 into a list of length two with three character elements in the first list and two elements in the second. I know that this should be easy, but I am a little confused by the text functions. Thanks in
