R] adding a new dataset to the default R distribution
Making data, especially data that have been the subject of published
papers, widely available, can be a useful spinoff from the R project,
another gift to the scientific community beyond the provision of
computing and analytic tools. Nowadays, in a complete publication of
a scientific result, there is every reason for the data to be part of
that publication. The Gentleman and Lang 2004

Aloha all,
I know too little about what I'm about to write and hope I'm not
wasting your time.
For a class I'm teaching in archaeological data analysis, I'm trying
to put together a routine that calculates the so-called Petersen
index and, especially, confidence intervals for the index. This was
introduced to archaeologists by N.R.J. Fieller and A. Turner in an

pair matching
Given two numeric vectors of possibly unequal length, I'd like to pair
each element of the shorter vector with an element of the longer
vector such that the sum of squared differences between the pairs is
minimized. Can someone point me to an R function or an algorithm for
accomplishing this?
All the best,
Tom

Wine success: HABit Wordstar Converter (version 3)
I had need of a bit of computer archeology (oddly enough, for a couple
of archaeologists, but that's another story). I used Henry Bartlett'
HABit Wordstar Converter (version 3)
(http://www.hotkey.net.au/~hambar/habit/wsconvrm.htm) to convert some
Wordstar for Mess-DOS files to text and HTML. It worked just fine
under wine (http://www.winehq.org). wine-20041201-1fc3winehq on Fedora

[ggplot2] Wind rose orientation
Aloha all,
I love using ggplot. It took a while to get used to the grammar of
graphics, but it is starting to get easy now that I am thinking in a
more structured way.
A question. I'm making a wind rose that I'd like to be oriented with
due north straight up. I've discovered that the orientation is
sensitive to how north is represented. When north is represented as

data frame to array
Aloha all,
I have a data frame with 4 columns. The first three are factors (f1,
f2, f3) and the fourth is numeric. I'd like to explore these data
using median polish. To do that I plan to use medpolish() on the
matrix[f1,f2xf3], then medpolish on the resulting matrix[f2,f3]. This
approach is described by Cook on page 141 of Exploring Data Tables,
Trends, and Shapes.

Samba 3 as PDC with Debian Linux server and Windows XP clients
Dear list
I am relatively new to networking problems of this kind so apologies
for the potentially simple question. I am trying to upgrade an existing
network to one using Samba 3 to configure roaming XP profiles on a
limited number of clients. I have re-written the smb.conf file to
reflect what I think are the appropriate settings, and this passed
testparm successfully, but I am unclear

Using ControlPlayback with AWS S3
Hi,
I have tested ControlPlayback and grabbed files via an apache server with
no issue. I want to be able to grab files via aws S3 which would require me
to add some headers to authenticate. Is there any way to have Asterisk add
headers or would I need a http proxy in the middle?
TIA.

Updating LICENSE.TXT files
In prepping our next release, we noticed that the LICENSE.TXT files
were still all copyrighted 2015. I've done a bit of archaeology and
it looks like the files to update are:

R graphs from database
Browsing the web recently, I came across what I think is a new utility for
generating an interactive, web-based R graph of data from a database. The
generated graph can be manipulated by a user to choose different data,
limits, etc. I would like to investigate using this with data from our
research project but unfortunately, I didn't bookmark it and it's no longer
in my browser history,

test request: SCO with setluid() (i686-pc-sco3.2v5.0.7, possibly others)
Hi all.
I am cleaning up (I hope) one of the nastier pieces of code in openssh:
do_setusercontext which is/was a twisty maze of platform-specific
nested ifdefs. I made a series of changes[1] where I moved each
platform-specific piece into a portable-only file platform.c, which does
not need to be kept in sync with OpenBSD.
The changes did not (I hope!) change the semantics, but there's one

error message jpeg62.dll missing
Dear R-help
We are getting an error message `jpeg62.dll missing'.
We are running Windows 7 64-bit, from a Mac using Boot Camp.
Do you know of this error message, and can you give us help trying to
resolve the problem?
many thanks

"shifted" bar chart / battleship curve
What I want to do is create a horizontal bar chart matrix for a set of data that have a common set of variables (e.g., % of As, % of Bs, etc.) listed on the Y-axis and groups (e.g., Classes) on the X-axis. The key here is that the bars for each individual class plot are "centered" rather than left or right-justified. In archaeology plots similar to this are called battleship curves or

Error: C stack usage is too close to the limit
Lately R has been behaving strange on my Linux (Ubuntu 7.10) machine,
with occasional segfaults. Today something else and reproducible
happened:
If I type the code below (meant for calibrating data), I get the error
message that "the C stack usage is too close to the limit".

ActiveRecord bug? ActiveRecord::ConnectionAdapters::Column.type_cast for float columns
Hi all,
I just noticed that in ActiveRecord::ConnectionAdapters::Column.type_cast[1]
(and type_cast_code[2]) the type casting for float columns simply does
value.to_f, whereas all the others have a rescue or call out to a method,
the default implementations of which have rescues or enough logic in that I
don''t think they''d fail.

Recent (6.02) PXELINUX on Soekris net4501
Dear all,
I'm trying to boot a recent PXELINUX on a brand new Soekris net4501
(comBIOS 1.33). This combination appears to not work out of the box...
I see much advice floating around from a few years ago, hinting that
earlier versions of PXELINUX might have worked. However before resorting
to archaeology I'd be interested in feedback from others who might have
got through this.
