I want to blog!
This isn''t Rails or Ruby related, but I just need some advice and
thought I''d ask the bright individuals here. I want to start my own
blog but I''m not sure where to begin. I don''t want to get a blogger
account because I want to have my own domain. Blogger also doesn''t
have many features. My hosting service is 1AND1 so it supports php,
cgi and mysql.

acts_as_metadata?
I''m running into the need (on at least one project now) to implement
end-user-customizable "metadata" or properties on model objects. The
standard example would be a Person class that had first_name,
last_name, etc. but would need to be extended real-time (through the
web admin interface) with properties such as phone_number : varchar
(30). I''ve done some basic

site takes a while to load after first visit in a while
Using lighttpd + fcgi to power a site. When no one has accessed it in
a while, the first visit to the page takes a while to load up. Then
subsequent visits are fairly fast.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

Postgresql vs MySQL
Is there any reason to avoid using postgresql for small web apps? That is, is it''s
overhead so large that the lighter MySQL will work substantially better for small apps on
small machines? Or are they very similar in performance and configuration?
I''ve used MySQL but postgresql has its appeals and I''m wondering if I need to keep MySQL
around at all.

503 Errors While Cluster Is Still Active
I''ve setup a new mongrel cluster on my VPS, and am noticing a lot if
503 errors if I try to hit the server too many times in succession in
a few seconds. I''ve read that this is usually caused by the cluster
crashing, but I haven''t been seen the cluster crash when I do this.
Does anyone have any other ideas what might cause this? I have my
server configured how

Mocking Access Control
I''m trying to jump on the TDD/BDD bandwagon, but am having trouble
understanding how i should mock my user. The user has a habtm
relationship to a roles model (acl_system2 plugin), but I''m not sure
how to tell rspec about a model.
My code:
describe UsersController do
integrate_views
before(:each) do
@user = mock_model(User)

Maintaining DB reflection without scaffolding
Hi,
I would like to know if there is a way to maintain database reflection
for the ''new'' and ''edit'' views whilst removing scaffolding?
I''m trying to create a webapp that will be somewhat maintainable by
colleagues (that aren''t necessarily web developers) through simple
manipulation of db table fields.
For example to add another field to the

slightly OT - Ruby division
Hey all,
In my code, it seems that when I divide two integers, the result is an
integer. Is there any way to make it such that when I divide two integers,
the result is a double?
Any help appreciated,
Jin

ajax insertion sort
Is there support yet for adding something to a list in sorted order?
For example, you have a form to add a new item and you want the new
item to be inserted in the list in the proper order. I''ve noticed
the :position option in the form_remote_tag but it doesn''t seem like
you can use it to keep things in sorted order.

[somewhat OT] Apache config for Rails + ColdFusion + PHP
Our group has several web apps developed in ColdFusion, PHP, and Rails. The
ColdFusion and PHP apps are on an older server, and the Rails apps on a new
server. Ideally, we''d like them all to share the same server.
Our current setup for the Rails server is Apache2.2 with mod_proxy_balancer
and mongrel_cluster. We''d like to have specific directories be processed

Apache Re-Write and Directories
Howdy,
I am using the ''default'' Apache 2.2 mod_rewrite rules suggested from the Web
site and they are working.
One thing related to static (non cluster directed) resources:
If I have a directory in public called ''static'', if I request it as follows:
http://www.domain.com/static/ - then it works
If I request it as:
http://www.domain.com/static - then it

problems running rails on mac osx tiger (10.4.3)
Hi,
I''m newbie to rails, so please be gentle with me.
I got one of the new powerbooks that apple just released
last month (october 2005).
I installed rails using RubyGems
and also the installer for mac osx found
here
http://www.tonyarnold.com/articles/2005/08/10/rolling-with-ruby-on-rails-on-mac-os-x-tiger-for-beginners
everything seems to update and install fine.
But when I type

Fast Bulk Inserts?
I need to insert ~100k rows into the database, but using "Table.new(...).save"
is painfully slow (I notice in the logs that it''s wrapping each insert in a
transaction -- that can''t be fast).
Any suggestions on how I can improve the speed of bulk inserts like this?
Thanks ...

Ruby+Apache2.2+ProxyLoadBalance ...... +PHP??
Hi,
I just realice that I can''t run php code anymore once I installed my dear
mongrels (under an Apache Proxy Balancer).
I''m just trying to run the clasic phpinfo() in the following file
/var/rubyapp/public/phpinfo.php ... but instead of being executed the code
is being displayed as plain text ... This is the ouput :))
<?PHP phpinfo(); ?>

Expert feedback needed
Hello list,
Some time ago I was looking for apache (as non balanced proxy) +
mongrel configurations. Almost everybody seemed to use similar
approaches (one of these could be found @ mongrel.rubygorge.org docs)
with mod_rewrite. I don''t use proxy_balancer because I don''t need it
at the moment (my site has pretty low traffic). This is apache
configuration that I''m using

Radius 0.0.1 -- Powerful Tag-Based Templates
I am pleased to announce the immediate release of Radius 0.5.0.
Radius is a small, but powerful tag-based template language for Ruby
inspired by the template languages used in MovableType
<www.movabletype.org> and TextPattern <www.textpattern.com>. It uses
tags similar to XML, but can be used to generate any form of plain text
(HTML, e-mail, etc...).
This release is much more feature

Mongrel+Apache 2.2 Proxy
Hi,
I''m running a rails (mongrel) based web service behind an apache proxy,
on windows 2003.
Sometimes I see a POST in the apache log that returned a 404 but nothing
about it in the rails log.
It doesn''t happen every time, 9 out of 10 times it works just fine.
The post (is actually a put) comes from a .NET application uploading a
small xml-file.
The log message in apache

mongrel cluster w/ apache
hi all,
i''m working on deploying my app w/ apache and a mongrel cluster. i''ve
started by copying the instructions and code from the agile rails book
and everything seems to be working fine but apache isn''t forwarding my
requests to mongrel the way i expect it should. there''s nothing in the
rewrite logs and nothing but 404 errors in the apache error logs.
