RangeFilter performance
I''m using a RangeFilter to limit a search to only the most recently
added documents. My index is about 150 000 articles and the RangeFilter
typically selects about 1000 of them to run a batch of searches against.
The performance is great as long as my index is newly optimized. As soon
as add a few new documents the average search time for a batch of
searches using the rangefilter

possible TZ bug in parseISO8601 - "Error in if (length(c(year, month, day, hour, min, sec)) == 6 && c(year, : [...]"
Hey all,
Virgin post to this list - hope I've got it right ;o)
I've been learning R intensively the last two weeks and gone from newbie
status to *reasonably* comfortable with it.
Here's an issue I just cannot solve however as it appears to be some kind
of bug in R itself. But I won't claim that for sure.
I have a function as follows:

adding a custom filter to the query
Hi all,
I''m trying to figure out how to add a filter into a search. I''ve
created the filter, basically copying the location filter from
http://blog.tourb.us/archives/ferret-and-location-based-searches. But
when I try to call Index.search and pass the filter in a hash with the
key :filter, I get back that it is expecting type Data, and so I''m at
a loss to figure out

perl bindings to Xapian::Query
QueryParser is great, but I would like to make a query myself, so I can
filter results by a specified value (in this case restricting by epoch
time after a certain value)
My code looks like this, and compiles, and appears like it should work
according to the perl source:
my $query = $qp->parse_query($querystr);
if ($datefilter) {
my $filterepoch = time() - ($datefilter

Problem with index file permissions
I have a problem with file permissions and Ferret. In our production
enivroment the webserver runs as one user and the console (and cron
jobs) as another one. When Ferret creates a segment or file in the index
directory it''s created with only read/write-permissions for the owner,
which means that the other user can''t access the file.
How can I affect the permission on files

Strange error. Index corrupt on production server
We''ve been running Ferret for a few months on our site with great
result. But, just a monent ago the index suddenly became corrupt.
It all started with this error message:

/usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/ferret-0.10.9/lib/ferret/index.rb:382:in

And after that every search resulted in this error:

Inconsistent results when using wild card queries
We get some unexpected results when using wild card queries. We''re using
aaf and Ferret 0.11.4
For exampel, when seraching on a part of a collegues name (kristofer)
and limiting it to a specific source_id:
Query: source_id:25 AND kri*
Result: 2 documents. None of them containg the word kristofer, but other
matching words, as "kring" and "kring?" (swedish)

acts_as_ferret.. what does it actually do?
Okay in this plea for help I''m going to repeat some of what i posted
before but with a larger amount of background info in the hope that i
can get a decent grip on ferret before it wriggles away..
Firstly, what does installing the acts_as_ferret plugin actually do? I
install it and add it to my model and then the index is automatically
generated and a few methods are added to it and

incorrect checksum for freed object?
I''m using ferret (0.9.4) in rails, but outside of the "acts_as_ferret"
plugin. Whenever I use a QueryFilter (even a very simple one), the server
will crash after one, two, or three reloads of a page (same page, same
query, same filter). It''s very non-deterministic and I can''t seem to
reproduce it outside of my application environment (I can''t get it

Whitespace Issues
I am trying to build up a filtered search using the logic below.

Ferret::Search::BooleanClause::Occur::MUST)
filter = Ferret::Search::QueryFilter.new(bq)

Category Number Results returned
I am looking to have a number of categories populated from my results of
a search. For example, searching on "sport" would display all results
for sport. I want to also have a number of categories to refine the
documents down. So by clicking on the "Fishing" category or the
"Shooting" category, I would only see the results on sport around that
category.

acts_as_ferret limit on multi_search not working?
I''m using acts_as_ferret to do a query like this:
Model1.multi_search("my query",[Model2,Model3], :limit => 2)
No matter what number i set limit to I get 10 items in the resultset. Am
I doing something wrong?
Thanks/David

scoring problem in acts_as_ferret
Hi,
I am using acts_as_ferret and have a problem with scoring. I would like
to organize it in such way that, if any of the searched terms fits, I
get 1.0 score as a result. I will explain it on the example.
I have in index:
a) "one two three four"
b) "one two three"
c) "one two"
d) "one"
When I search for "one" I would like to get 1.0 score for

Help with sorting arrays with objects in it
I have to build an array through both activerecord and also through a ferret
index.
I was hoping to find a way of sorting the array as i combine the two so
def advanced_search(search_text, store, format, sortby)
# find items in ferret index
items = Item.find_by_contents(search_text)
# and now find all the items from a certain store or category
items_from_sql = Item.find_by_sql("SELECT *

Strange Sorting Issues
Hi there,
I''m having some strange sorting stuff goign on. Here''s my search method:
sort_fields = []
sort_fields << Ferret::Search::SortField.new("name",
:reverse => :false)
@results = Listing.find_by_contents @search_criteria, :limit => :all,
:sort => sort_fields
page = (params[:page] ||= 1).to_i
items_per_page = 9
offset = (page - 1) *

Weighting recent results
I was thinking about this some more: Is there a reason I can't just
weight by some function of recency at indexing time?
$weight = get_weight_based_on_recency(...);
$tg->index_text($txt,$weight);
If I wanted to allow the user the option of searching either in
recency-weighted mode or not, I could index each document into 2
different databases, one with and one without.
This avoids

Problem searching with special characters
I''m using Ferret on a Swedish website and I get some unexpected
behaviour on searches containing the swedish charchters ???.
An exampel, if I index a string "Varf?r fungerar det inte" ("Why doesnt
it work" in swedish) and search for "f?r" I''ll get one (1) match. The
expected behaviour would be no matches since ''f?r'' is part of

Is there a way to do incremental search?
Say the user first enters "ruby" for search and gets 1000 results. Then
he can search "rails" just in the 1000 results just returned.
The common scenario is some kind of advanced search. User can
incrementally add criteria and the program will narrow the results step
by step.
I know that at least I can use all the criteria as a whole to do the
searching, but this is a waste

I think your issue here is that $filterepoch is a number rather than
a string (a Perl scalar can have different representations internally).

Effective search when knowing ID
Hi list,
I''m new to ferret and I wonder what is the best way to search if I
know one fields id and want to search on its content.
I have experimented with FilteredQuery but I don''t know if this is
the best way.
Eg.
index = Index::Index.new(:path => ''/tmp/all'')
@dbh = Database.instance.connect
result = @dbh.exec("SELECT pk_fulltext_id, fulltext_text
