number of patients in a hospital on a given date
Dear R-users!
I am using R 1.7.0, under Windows XP.
Having some hospital discharge data (admission date and discharge date for
each patient), I want to get the number of patients in the hospital on a
given date.
My data look like (simple example):
> x <- data.frame(patid=c("pat1", "pat2"), adm.date = c("15.03.2002",
"16.03.2002"),

General help on sample size based on recurrent events
Hello,
I have a general help question that some of you might be able able to help.
I would like to design a study (a two group comparison) based on reduction on events(say hospital admissions). In a previous study hospital admission rate of 140 admissions per 72 patients (over a 4 month period) has been observed. That is rate is about 1.9. In order to see the admission rate reduction of 50% over

Survival analysis with no events in one treatment group
I'm trying to fit a Cox proportional hazards model to some hospital
admission data. About 25% of the patients have had at least one
admission, and of these, 40% have had two admissions within the 12
month period of the study. Each patients has had one of 4
treatments, and one of the treatment groups has had no admissions for
the period. I used:

map_data
Hello, I have some problems with calling the map_data function in maps package. Not so long ago it was not a problem, but for some reasons in July this year it became unavailable.
For instance, if I call the following code:
m<-map_data(?world?)
The R returns to me:
Error: cannot find function ?map_data?

Hierarchical data sets: which software to use?
Dear R-helpers,
I’m writing for advice on whether I should use R or a different package or
language. I’ve looked through the R-help archives, some manuals, and some
other sites as well, and I haven’t done too well finding relevant info,
hence my question here.
I’m working with hierarchical data (in SPSS lingo). That is, for each case
(person) I read in three types of (medical) record:

Using if, else statements
Hi all,
Again I have searched the net and so on, without finding an answer to this
surely simple problem. A short bit of code would be appreciated.
I have a object named `data' with the following column headings.
Date, maxitemp, minitemp, admissions, d.o.w.
Where d.o.w. is day of the week, written "Sun" "Mon" etc.
I just need to scale the Monday admissions by

Virtual servers - multiple sambas
New to this list. Running samba 2.2.4 set up as a PDC. We've recently
added another department to our office network. Ideally, I don't want
either department to see each others shares - just to be aware of the
shares in their own workgroups. The documentation says that you can set up
virtual servers using the "netbios aliases" and the "%L" options in the

Call Admission Control
Let's say you have a 256 Kbps Internet connection and you're using it for
voice calls. With mu-law (G.711), each call uses about 80 kbps, so you
really can't have more than 3 calls active at one time. Does Asterisk
support any kind of Call Admission Control where it would prevent you from
originating a call if it would exceed your Internet bandwidth? For example,
in this case, ideally,

PROPOSAL: Remove SWAT in Samba 4.1
As most of you would have noticed, we have now had 3 CVE-nominated
security issues for SWAT in the past couple of years.
At the same time, while I know many of our users use SWAT, we just don't
have anybody to maintain it inside the Samba Team. Kai has made a
valiant effort to at least apply the XSS and CSRF guidelines when folks
make security reports, but by his own admission he isn't a

RDOC and dot on mac
All,
This is probably a bit more of a mac question, but here goes. (Admission: I
posted this to ruby-talk as well....)
I am trying to use rdoc -d to generate class diagrams on a mac running Tiger
(OS X 10.4) for a rails app. I managed to get dot installed, but now am
running into problems with dot looking for libraries that either do not
exist or are apparently in the wrong place. I probably made

Help files mismatches and R CMD check
I have a function t.test.cluster for which R CMD check results in a documentation warning because its argument names don't match those of t( ). Is there a way around this error besides renaming the function? Will this disqualify a package from admission to CRAN? How did t.test avoid this warning?
Thanks,
Frank

LDAP + Samba4(AD) + SSH
Hey,
By "through LDAP" I meant that our linux servers would look for the users
using pam_ldap.
Anyway, I was able to "fix" this by mapping gidNumber to gidNumber instead
of primaryGroupID on nslcd.conf.
$ id
uid=10000(Guilherme) gid=10001(it) grupos=10001(it)

Logic problem in NUT with upscode2 driver
Hi All,
I have what is probably a 12 year old (or older) Compaq R3000 UPS
plugged into a FreeBSD 8 system running NUT version 2.6.5
This UPS contains a total of 16 batteries in 2 banks of 8,
each battery is 6 volts and the bank produces 50 volts.
The UPS monitors battery voltage and the battery charger in
the UPS works like this. For about 2 days it will apply a
charge/float/topping

sqldf file specification, non-ASCII
Dear R-Listers,
I am a Windows user (R 2.6.2) using the development version of sqldf to
try to read a 3GB file originally stored in .sas7bdat-format. I convert
it to comma-delimited ASCII format with StatTransfer before trying to
import just the rows I need into R. The problem is that I get this
error:
