R User Group mailing list
Here in Canada's capital we have set up the Ottawa-Gatineau R Users Group (OGRUG) and are wondering how we can get a special interest group (sig) mailing list established linked to the R-project site. We understand that there may be other RUGs out there, so maybe such a list should be something like R-rug-Ottawa, allowing for similar names for other lists around the world. This could help

R-User groups in North America (SF, LA, NYC, Ottawa)
Hi R folks, I'd like to announce several new R users groups here in SF, LA, NYC, and Ottawa - as well as their next scheduled event. The goal of these user groups, besides gently explaining 'drop=TRUE' to the uninitiated, is to exchange knowledge, promote best practices, and spur the adoption of R for innovative applications. If I've missed any groups here, please feel to add on

Simulation conference -- possible R opportunity
I have been talking with Gabriel Wainer about the possibility of some community building with R and simulation workers. The conference announced below is just before UseR (but in that capital to the north of Washington). If anyone on this list is participating or thinking of participating, perhaps they could let me know off-list. Ottawa-Gatineau R User Group would likely try to set up some

Model forecasts with new factor levels - predict.warn
predict.warn() -- a function to display factor levels in new data for linear model prediction that do not exist in the estimating data. Date: 2005-8-24 From: John C. Nash (with thanks to Uwe Ligges for suggestions) nashjc at uottawa.ca Motivation: In computing predictions from a linear model using factors, it is possible to introduce new factor levels. This was encountered on a practical

Ottawa Asterisk User Group Kickoff - Wed -- May 17 -- 5:00
Hello, Please join us Wednesday May 17th for an informal kickoff to openly discuss and formulate a plan to resurrect the Ottawa Asterisk User Group as well as discuss additional topics of interest that impact the VOIP marketplace and may also be included in our collective strategy. We'll also hear from the folks responsible for the Canadian Association of VOIP Providers (CAVP)

[Fwd: Re: [Fwd: failure delivery]]
I appear to have hit one of the "drop" issues raised in some discussions a couple of years ago by Frank Harrell. They don't seem to have been fixed, and I'm under some pressure to get a quick solution for a forecasting task I'm doing. I have been modelling some retail sales data, and the days just after Thanksgiving (US version!) are important. So I created some dummy

SYSLINUX talk or BOF at the Ottawa Linux Symposium 2007
Hi all, I'm thinking of doing a SYSLINUX talk or BOF at the Ottawa Linux Symposium this year. I'm right now trying to figure out which, but I'm kind of leaning toward a BOF, since I really would like to take the opportunity to get more feedback. However, if there is interest in a formal talk I might be able to do that. If so, I'd like to know what people want to hear about.

Linear regression - several response variables vs few ind variables
Hi all, I need to run several simple linear regressions at once, using the following data. Response variables: Bird species (sp 1, sp2, sp3...spn). Independent variable: Natprop - proportion of natural area. covarate: Effort = hours). One single linear regression would be: lmSp1 <- lm(sp1~ natprop + effort). However, I need to run this linear regression for all bird species that I have

Testing relationships in logistic regression
I am interested in knowing whether and how I can test the significance of the relationship between my continuous predictor variable (a covariate) and my binary response variable according to two different groups, my categorical predictor variable, in a logistic regression model (glm). Specifically, can I determine whether the relationships are identical (the hypothesis of coincidence), or whether

Lessons from LibreOffice project
The message below came to me from the Getting Open Source Logic INto Government list. I'm passing it on to the devel list as the infoworld article may have some ideas of relevance to the R project, mainly concerning build and test issues and tracking changes in the code base. While the LibreOffice project is very different from R, there may nevertheless be some tips we can borrow in the

Title case in DESCRIPTION for package where a word is a function namei
How about allowing underscore? (I believe WRE is silent on this, and I have not tried submitting a package with underscore in the title.) As I pointed out in my OP, _optim()_ works. And we have the advantage that we can distinguish package from function. The purpose of consistent editing is surely to provide the affordances that save us from needing extra documentation, as per Donald Norman's

IPSEC, multiple subnets and multiple road warriors, oh my! :)
Hi all, I''ve been using Shorewall 1.42 for a month on two firewalls at work and my own personal colocated server and love it. While pretty familiar with iptables, I don''t like dealing with it on a daily basis, and Shorewall certainly makes life easier. I''ve deployed Shorewall on both our Toronto and Ottawa office firewalls, and have configured a FreeS/WAN IPSEC

Problems transferring Large Files(>1 GB) from Windows to Linux.
Hi All, I am currently using Samba v3.0.14a and it's incredibly responsive...except when it comes to large files. Currently my specs are as follows: Santiago Dell PowerEdge SC1420, which is using SATA (RAID 5), and reiserfs 3.6 Ottawa: Desktop PC Windows XP 100/10 Ethernet Card. Douglas: Desktop PC Windows XP Gigabit Ethernet Card. These are the tests that I have performed: Test Set 1:

Mathematica and R
What are some effective ways to leverage the strengths of R and Mathematica for the analysis of a single data set? More specifically, are there any functions that can assist with any of the following? 1. Calling an R function from Mathematica. 2. Calling a Mathematica function from R. 3. Using XML or another reliable data format to pass vectors, matrices, and/or lists from one environment to

histoRicalg -- project to document older methods used by R and transfer knowledge
After some thought, I decided r-devel was probably the best of the R lists for this item. Do feel free to share, as the purpose is to improve documentation and identify potential issues. John Nash The R Consortium has awarded some modest funding for "histoRicalg", a project to document and transfer knowledge of some older algorithms used by R and by other computational systems. These
