sampling vectors
Hello Listers, I am trying to sample a vector to create a new one of sample length, witha sum equal to the sum of the initial vector: initial = 10, 30, 10 (sum=50) sample example = 5, 35, 10 (sum=50) or 25, 15, 10 (sum=50), etc ... My problem is to control the sum, so it stays constant. Any suggestions would be very helpful ! Thank you in advance, Eric

simulating outcomes - categorical distribution (?)
Hi, I am simulating an event that has 15 possible outcomes and I have a vector 'pout' that gives me the probability of each outcome - different outcomes have different probabilities. Does anyone know a simple way of simulating the outcome of my event? If my event had only two possible outcomes (0/1) I would pick a uniform random number between 0 and 1 and use it to choose between the two

Major difference in the outcome between SPSS and R statisticalprograms
First off, Marc Schwartz posted this link earlier today, read it. http://cran.r-project.org/doc/FAQ/R-FAQ.html#Why-are-p_002dvalues-not-di splayed-when-using-lmer_0028_0029_003f Second, your email is not really descriptive enough. I have no idea what OR is, so I have no reaction. Third, you're comparing estimates from different methods of estimation. lmer will give standard errors that

changes in glm?
I am running some simulations which involve fitting a glm with Binomial error ( in fact Bernoulli) and logistic link. Running R 0.63 I have no problems. However I need more speed so migrated to our UNIX boxes which run Version 0.90.1 (December 15, 1999) Here I get an error Error in (if (is.empty.model(mt)) glm.fit.null else glm.fit)(x = X, y = Y, : y must be univariate unless binomial

Why isn't R recognising integers as numbers?
I have a number of files containing anywhere from a few dozen to a few thousand integers, one per record. The statement "refdata18 = read.csv("K:\\MerchantData\\RiskModel\\Capture.Week.18.csv", header = TRUE,na.strings="")" works fine, and if I type refdata18, I get the integers displayed, one value per record (along with a record number). However, when I try "

Shorewall as a "commercial" firewall
I am considering replacing my old checkpoint and watchguard firewalls witha single Linux box using iptables and shorewall. I have two ISP''s (with separate routing tables), two DMZ''s, at least one VPN to a remote office, and a local trusted network. The configuration will look like: +----------------+ | | net0 ----------+ eth1

Slightly OT: Generators & UPS
Hi, Can anyone shed some light on this: My PC's are on a separate power circuit. Each PC has its own UPS. I have an old Honda generator. When the power goes out, I fire up the generator. However, the UPS's still run on battery. If I connect the PC directly to the socket and bypass the UPS, the PC works. I was told by a UPS supplier, that the power output from the generator was

aov problem
I am using R to make two-way ANOVA on a number of variables using g <- aov(var ~ fact1*fact2) where var is a matrix containing the variables. However the outcome seem to be dependent on the order of fact1 and fact2 (i.e. fact2*fact1) gives a slightly (factor of 1.5) different result. Any ideas why this is? Thanks for any help Anders

NULL object, R programming
Dear R users, I get the following (I think puzzling) result when doing the following: > a <- list(3,4,5) > a[[2]] <- NULL > a [[1]] [1] 3 [[2]] [1] 5 I would have expected the result to be: [[1]] [1] 3 [[2]] NULL [[3]] [1] 4 as in the outcome of: > list(3, NULL, 4) Is this a desired effect? Selecting one row or multiple rows per ID
Hi, Could someone help with coding this in R? I need to select one row per patient i in clinic j. The data is organized similar to that shown below. Two columns - patient i in column j identify each unique patient. There are two columns on outcome. Some patients have multiple rows with each row representing one visit, coded for in the column, visit. Some patients have just one row indicating
