Statistical question re assessing fit of distribution functions.
I am in a situation where I have to fit a distrution, such as cauchy or normal, to an empirical dataset. Well and good, that is easy. But I wanted to assess just how good the fit is, using ks.test. I am concerned about the following note in the docs (about the example provided): "Note that the distribution theory is not valid here as we have estimated the parameters of the normal

making spearman correlation cor() call fail with log(0) as input
Hi, How can I make the cor(x, y, method="spearman") call to produce an error when the input to it (x, y) produces an error? Here is a simple example: > a <- c(0, 1, 2) > b <- c(100, 2, 4) ## error: > log(a) [1] -Inf 0.0000000 0.6931472 ## error, as expected: > cor(log(a), log(b), method="pearson") [1] NaN ## not an error any more (not expected): >

Interpreting summary of lme
Dear mixed-modelers, I have built a mixed model and I'm having serious trouble with interpreting the output. I want to test differences in the coefficient of variation (CV) of light across 3 tree crown exposures (Depth). I have measured direct and diffuse radiation (RF) and I want to test for differences for each kind of radiation between crown exposures, as well as differences between

[LLVMdev] Exception handling slowdown?
Did something change with exception handling recently? A bunch of lit bots are showing slower compile times for many tests. Ciao, Duncan. [LLVMdev] Exception handling slowdown?
Nothing that I'm aware of has changed with EH. Is it possible to bisect the problem? -bw On Jun 20, 2012, at 12:38 AM, Duncan Sands <baldrick at free.fr> wrote: > Did something change with exception handling recently? [LLVMdev] Exception handling slowdown?
Hi Bill, > Nothing that I'm aware of has changed with EH. Is it possible to bisect the problem? I don't see any relevant LLVM changes, so I guess clang C++ compilation slowed down due to some clang changes. I'm not going to investigate this. ext3 filesystem error message - need an interpretation
Hi, I'm having some serious problems diagnosing a hardware issue in my linux system. The following error occurs intermittently. I have replaced hard drives and it is still occurring. I'm trying to determine if it's a device conflict, a problem with the motherboard or something else. Can anyone help? hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error} hda: dma_intr: 0x40

multinom() and multinomial() interpretation
Hello and thanks in advance for any advice. I am not clear how, in practice, the multinom() function in nnet and the multinomial() function in VGAM differ in terms of interpretation. I understand that they are fit differently. Are there certain scenarios where one is more appropriate than the other? In my case I have a dependent variable with 4 categories and 1 binary and 4 continuous

Interpretation of poly(x, y, degree=2) coefficients
Does anyone know of a function that turns the coefficients of lm( y~ poly(x1 , x2, degree=2)) into something that can be interpreted easily. I was think along the lines of the matrix representation of quadratic forms: (x-mu)'A(x-mu) +k , and finding the eigenvectors/values of A, and the vector mu, but anything that allows me to visualise a contour plot would be great. Thanks Simon Bond

Interpretation of ranef output
Hello. I'm running a generalized linear model and am interested in using the random effects that are output for further analysis. My random effect is interacting with two different fixed effects (which which are factors with two levels each). When I retrieve the random effects I get something like this: (Intercept) nutrient (Intercept) light (Intercept) Aa-0 0.59679192

rpart - interpretation of results of tree on survival data
Hi All, I am fitting a tree to censored survival data using the rpart package and wanted to better understand the results. I am trying to interpret the output from the tree. I am interested in understanding what "yval" is for a survival tree. I see in the output of summary, the phrase "estimated rate". The estimated rate is 1 for the entire tree, and more of less for each

interpretation of stress in NMDS
Among those users of Primer, stress values greater than 0.3 are interpreted as "questionable". Using both isoMDS and metaMDS (vegan package), the stress values returned are much higher using my own data and using examples provided in R Help. For example Rstress = 8.3, and the stressplot r2 = 0.99 indicating (to me) that the ordination is OK. I am guessing that the "stress"

Enabling interpretation of desktop.ini and alphabetical sorting when icons are grouped by type
Hi, How can I make it so that on Samba shares the desktop.ini file is interpreted (responsible for displaying the folder customisations such as icons like My Music or My Pictures folders or others folders customized with the "Customize" tab in the properties window). It is interpreted OK on local folders or on Windows Server 2003 shares, just not on Samba shares. Further more, on Samba

interpretation of flexsurvreg output from flexsurv package
Dear all, I am fitting a parametric regression model to survival data using the flexsurvreg function from the flexsurv package. I am using a Gompertz distribution (a 2-parameter distribution) to describe the hazard function and I want to compare two groups. The model is very simple: flexsurvreg(formula = Surv(day, censored) ~ group, dist = "gompertz") and the output is also quite

Log interpretation
Hi, Are there any decent (commercial or free) LOG parsers for A*k. Its *really* hard to debug issues involving multiple calls (eg meetme) when all of the messages are interlaced with each other. There must be an easier way. (A*K 1.2.18) Adrian
