OT: US city proximity search
Does anyone know where I might be able to download/purchase a database of US cities and their longitude/latitude coordinates? I''d like to provide a search option on a website that allows users to search by city but include cities in the surrounding area. FULLTEXT search in MySQL on rails
I tried adding a FULLTEXT search index to a table of mine in MySQL, only to discover that the InnoDB table format doesn''t seem to support this feature. Switching to the MyISAM table type seemed to work, but I seem to have some recollection that ActiveRecord transactions aren''t fully atomic on MyISAM tables. Is this true or am I just remembering wrong? If so, does anyone have

Confusing lock problem in rails
I have a model class in rails that has a class variable that is a ferret index. For some reason, the methods in my class that refer to the class variable are getting lock conflicts. Can anybody see any obvious reason why? I notice that it keeps leaving a lock file in the index directory. I thought auto_flush was supposed to remove the lock automatically after every operation. Is there

destroy vs delete
what is the difference between destroy and delete in AR I am not sure what they mean by "Destroys the record with the given id by instantiating the object and calling destroy<http://api.rubyonrails.com/classes/ActiveRecord/Base.html#M000866>(all the callbacks are the triggered). If an array of ids is provided, all of them are destroyed." in

Mass mail performance
How does Action Mailer perform when sending out say 3,000 emails? I know the answer will have a lot to do with the hardware, but in general, is Action Mailer up to the task of completing an operation like this in reasonable time?

Set the foreign key constraint column name?
I am applying Rails to an existing schema and not sure how much the existing developers will let me go in and rename things. So I need to discover the limits of what I can change with Rails. I''ve found set_table_name and set_primary_key, which have been very useful. If I have a "foo has_one :bar" relationship, but then in the bar table my column is named "fooid"

ActiveRecord::Base#update_all expected behaviour
Hi I noticed that if in my code I use the following: Photo.update_all("title = ''Ruby rocks'' ", "id IN (#{@photo_ids})") All my objects are properly updated but none of the filters/callbacks are triggered. Is that what''s expected? I have a before_update filter set on the Photo class and it gets totally ignored, I guess the only way to solve this

Why you MUST use SCGI for Rails development
Hello happy Railers, I used to develop with a local out-of-the-box Apache and load times were pretty slow (like a few seconds each page). "Well, it''s the price to pay for no compile / cache / etc..." I thought. Nonsense. Yesterday I installed SCGI, and now I''ve got the best of both worlds: rails development env uses my very latest modifications, while SCGI ensures I

Deleting join association of has_many :through
I''m trying to use has_many :through, since my join model deserves being more than just an intersection table. But when I try to break the association, the break only seems "temporary": Let''s say my two tables are Users and Colors, and the join model is Favorites. user = Users.find(1) user.colors.length >> 2 c = user.colors.first >> #<Color:....>

Query question
I have an index in which I want different records to be accessible to different users. I think I can do this by adding a "users" field to each record in the index and narrow down my queries to only those records matching the current user''s userid. I have the userids separated by commas. What would be the right way to query for a certain user? I have to make sure that I

Ordering results by something other than relevance
