C-statistic comparison with partially paired datasets
Does anyone know of an R-function or method to compare two C-statistics
(Harrells's C - rcorr.cens) obtained from 2 different models in
partially paired datasets (i.e. some similar and some different cases),
with one continuous independent variable in each separate model? (in a
survival analysis context)?
I have noticed that the rcorrp.cens function can be used for paired data.
Thanks

median filter
Dear R users,
Does anyone know if there's a median filter available in R?
I have a considerable amount of images as 256 by 256 matrices and want to
smooth them with a 5x5 median filter. Until now I'm not lucky in searching
the R-help list/files.
Thanks,

problem with unlist POSIX date at midnight
Dear R-users,
I use unlist of POSIX dates to extract the year, hour etc. With that I
can search for files in my database which are in the form
'yyyymmddhh_synops.txt'
However, I get stucked during midnight where unlist just gives NA's.
The script is given below, the problem accurs at acc.period[16]
(midnight). However when I write out the character, unlist works well.

use apply function with which
Dear R-users,
For a data frame (say in this example X) I want to look up the
corresponding value in a 'look-up data frame' (in this example Y). The
for-loop works but is very time-consuming because 'X' in reality is very
big.
Therefore I would like to have a solution with apply. However, I do not
succeed. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Hanneke

3D Scatter Plot
Hello:
I would like to be able to do a 3D scatter plot from 3 variables, 2
independent and 1 dependent. The closest R function I could find for
this is "cloud". However cloud uses, as input, a matrix where the value
of each matrix element is the dependent variable value at that matrix
coordinate. My problem is that the independent variable values are
floating point and can be of

segmentation fault using hdf5load() under Unix
Dear R-users,
I'm experiencing a segmentation fault when using
hdf5load(file,load=FALSE). Library(hdf5) loads without problems but when
loading a file, R crashes. I compiled R under Unix (Solaris for Sun).
There is nothing wrong with the files, as I can run the same script at
another place where R runs under Linux.
Is it possible it has something to do with the hdf5 libraries where

Correlation Matrix with a Covariate
R Help -
I'm trying to run a correlation matrix with a covariate of "age" and will
at some point will also want to covary other variables concurrently.
I'm using the "psych" package and have tried other methods such as writing
a loop to extract semi-partial correlations, but it does not seem to be
working. How can I accomplish this?

Significance of interaction depends on factor reference level - lmer/AIC model averaging
Dear R users,
I am using lmer combined with AIC model selection and averaging (in the
MuMIn package) to try and assess how isotope values (which indicate diet)
vary within a population of animals.
I have multiple measures from individuals (variable 'Tattoo') and multiple
individuals within social groups within 4 locations (A, B, C ,D) crucially I
am interested if there are

I have a problem with the df.
I read in a big csv file.

then I try this:

Parameter scaling problems with optim and Nelder-Mead method (bug?)
Dear all,
I?m having some problems getting optim with method="Nelder-Mead" to work
properly. It seems like there is no way of controlling the step size,
and the step size seems to depend on the *difference* between the
initial values, which makes no sense. Example:
f=function(xy, mu1, mu2) {
print(xy)
dnorm(xy[1]-mu1)*dnorm(xy[2]-mu2)
}
f1=function(xy) -f(xy, 0,

Forcing a negative slope in linear regression?
Dear forum members,
How can I force a negative slope in a linear regression even though the
slope might be positive?
I will need it for the purpose of determining the trend due reasons other
than biological because the biological (genetic) trend is not positive for
these data.
Thanks. Julia

How to sum values across multiple variables using a wildcard?
I have a dataframe called "data" with 5 records (in rows) each of
which has been scored on each of many variables (in columns).
Five of the variables are named var1, var2, var3, var4, var5 using
headers. The other variables are named using other conventions.
I can create a new variable called var6 with the value 15 for each
record with this code:
> var6=var1+var2+var3+var4+var5
