Sliding Window Time Series Analysis - hourly rainfall
I have a time series of rainfall in a dataframe. I would like to be
able to aggregate this using a sliding window approach- i.e. a new 24
hourly total is calculated for each hours rainfall. I'm struggling to
understand how this might be achieved - currently I've tried looping a
sum function to re-calculate a new total at every stage of the loop.

Loop problem
Dear all, I have a problem with a loop, if anyone has any knowledge on
these things I would appreciate some comments. The code below is
designed to allow me to extract the top record of the data frame, and
them remove rows from the data frame which have an index close to the
extracted top record.

Quick fix formatting
Hi all,
I'm hoping there's a quick fix for this.
I have two data frames and am running a loop to match similar rows.
However the matching is not working well, and I suspect it is because of
the different formats of columns. For example, in col. 1 of dataframe 1
the nummbers are formatted as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...31 However in col. 1
dataframe 2 the numbers are

colClasses
Hi Folks!
I'm reading in some data from a .csv file that has a date column.
How do I use colClasses to get read.csv to recognize the date column?
The documentation on this seems to be nil -
And yes, I've read help and R Data Import/Export and can't figure out
what the colClasses syntax is.
Thanks,
john

symbols hidden in polar.plot
Hi Folks,
Here is my attempt at a simple polar plot.

I only see half the symbols, the other half of each symbol is hidden
under the circular grid. In fact if I change rp.type="r", I see the

Problems with weekday extraction from zoo objects
Hi Folks!
I'm struggling with dates - but enough about my personal life.....
I have two daily time series files. In one (x) the date format is Y/m/d
and the other (y) is d/m/y. I used read.zoo on both and they read into
R with no problem.
Then I use: weekdays(as.Date(x$DATE)) and get what I expect - all the
days of the week in my data set.

Extracting maximums from a sliding window
Dear all, I am having some problems with the folowing task and would
appreciate any thoughts on the matter.
I have a sliding window time series of rainfall. This is 24 hour window
created from an hourly record. Every hour, a new twenty four hour total
is calculated. I would like to extract the Top 50 twenty four hour
totals however I have a problem.

Silly question - Anything faster than rm?
Maybe this is a silly question, but i have a few million files i need
to delete but i can't just reformat the volume.
Right now the fastest thing i can think of is
nice -20 rm -Rf /folder-i-want-to-delete
is there a better or faster way to do this?
Thanks,

Extract lags from a formula
Hi folks!
How do I extract lags from a formula? An example:
mod.eq<-formula(x~lag(x,-1)+lag(x,-2))
> mod.eq
x ~ lag(x, -1) + lag(x, -2)
> mod.eq[1]
"~"()
> mod.eq[2]
x()
> mod.eq[3]
lag(x, -1) + lag(x, -2)()
I'm trying to extract the lags into a vector that would be simply [1,2].
How do I do this? I'm using the dyn package to do dynamic

System.time
Hi folks!
Does anyone know why I might see something like this after running
system.time?
system.time(svd(Mean_svd_data))
user system elapsed
0 0 0
The data set is tiny and the function returns results instantly, but
shouldn't it still give me a time?
Thanks,
John

Errors melt()ing data...
Hi,
I'm trying to melt() some data for subsequent cast()ing and am
encoutering errors.
The overall process requires a couple of casts()s and melt()s.

A polar.plot BUG in plotrix 1.3.3 ?
Hi,
I just updated to R-2.1.1 and updated packages acordingly
However, after the update, routines that use polar.plot
did not function as correctly.
In plotrix 1.3.3 the polar.plot function does scale label.pos
to radians prior to calling radial.plot
Hence, the command
polar.plot(c(5,10,5,0),c(-10,0,10,20),rp.type='P',

Import of Access data via RODBC changes column name ("NO" to "Expr1014") and the content of the column
Dear all,
I have some problems with importing data from an Access data base via
RODBC to R. The data base contains several tables, which all are
imported consecutively. One table has a column with column name "NO". If
I run the code attached on the bottom of the mail I get no complain, but
the column name (name of the respective vector of the data.frame) is
"Expr1014" instead

polar.plot
Hi,
Two questions:
1 - Say I have average speed and directions for tide and I would like to
plot them on a polar plot, but with different colors so I can indicate the
two directions. I'm using polar.plot from the plotrix library. How can I add
a second "b" and "dir.b" series to a polar.plot?
library(plotrix)
a = 3
dir.a = 85
b = 4
dir.b = 250

Multiple time series plots
Hi all:
I'm trying to plot two time series created in Rmetrics and label the
x-axis with dates. I tried the following:
dates <- as.Date(seriesPositions(x.agg))
r <- as.Date(range(dates))
ts.plot(x.agg@Data[,c(1,5)],gpars=list(ylab="Volume",
lty=c(1:2),xaxt="n",main="Plot of Volume"))
axis.Date(1, at=seq(r[1], r[2], length.out=10),
