conditional replacement of character strings in vectors
Hello, I have a dataframe that looks like this:
a b NA Honduras China NA NA Sudan Japan NA NA Mexico NA Mexico
I would like to replace the NA values in column b with the non-NA values in
column a. I have tried a number of techniques, (if, ifelse) but I must have
the logic wrong.
Thanks

Character manipulation using "strsplit" & vectorization
Dear R users,
Suppose I have a data set with inconsistent names for a field.
I desire to make these to consistent names.
i.e

Hello everyone,
I am new to R. I have data in the form of excel pivot table format and I
want to cast it into a format which can make it compatible with

Since I already have the package in pivot format; I avoid melt function
and use the cast directly.
I inspect the

pasting a formula string with double quotes in it
Hello everyone,
I have tried several ways of doing this and searched the documentation and
help lists and I have been unable to find an answer or even whether it is
possible to do it. I am pasting together a formula and I need to insert
double quotes around the strings. Here's an example:
location <- c("AL", "AK", "MA", "PA")

Sorting Text Frames
[Using 2.0.1 under Windows XP]
There are a few pages on the internet that list equivalents of
"thank you" in many languages. I downloaded one from a Google search
and I thought that it would be interesting and a good R exercise to
sort the file into the order of the expressions, rather than the languages.
I tidied up the web page and got it into the format that it was nearly

LDAP Authentication fails with ñ character in password.
Hi Guys,
I''ve got a rails application that uses activeldap to authenticate
users. Its been working great for about 6 months now, but a user from
mexico started using it recently, but can''t seem to login. I''ve
narrowed it down to the fact that his password contains a ñ character
in it. This problem is also present in a test user account I''ve setup.

Help with K-means Clustering
Hello, I'm new using R.
I'm trying to develop a K-means Clustering with R for some data I have,
however each time I use that instruction with the same data my cluster
means, clustering vector and within cluster sum of square change and I don't
understand why because I use the same parameters and the same data.
Can anybody explain me why does it happen?
Thank you

I am trying to set up Astunicall 1.4.16 with a link from Alestra in
Mexico City. I have done everything I usually do for other links in

Anyone has any experience with R2 and Alestra?

searching several subsequences in a single string sequence
Hi all
I am analyzing bird song element sequences. I would like to know how can I
get how many times a given subsequence is found in single string sequence.
For example:
If I have this single sequence:
ABCABAABABABCAB
I am looking for the subsequence "ABC". Want I need to get here is that the
subsequence is found twice.
Any idea how can I do this?
Thanks

r format questions
Hi,
1) I have noticed that when I use the aggregate function it outputs numbers in the results. for example:
aggregate by product
group.1 Aggregate
1 ProductA 1000400.00
2 ProductB 23232323.00
3 Missing 232323.00
is there a way to suppress the numbers infront of aggregate outputs. I checked and they don't look like columns when I do a summary so I can't -1

Dear R-experts,
I still have problems with the reading of a matrix.
Input: matrixData6.txt
A-Paar B-Paar C-Paar D-Paar E-Paar
A 1 3 5 7 9
B 2 4 6 8 10
R-commands:
y=read.table(file="Z:/Software/R-Programme/matrixData6.txt")

Result:
A.Paar B.Paar C.Paar D.Paar E.Paar
A 1 3 5 7 9
B 2 4 6 8 10
If you look into the txt-file

Keyboard backlight fails with recent kernels
I do not use my laptop often, normally my better half has possession and
use of it.
It is a late 2011 ASUS ROG G73S which performs very well.
The keyboard backlight was an issue initially under CentOS6, but the
kind folks at elrepo found the missing bits in a more recent kernel and
created a package to add them to the older CentOS6 kernel.
An upgrade to CentOS7 went without a hitch and the
