problem with rgl interactivity with R-2.7.1 and Ubuntu Hardy
I'm trying to use the rgl package on R-2.7.1 running on top of Ubuntu
Hardy amd64. using open3d() and plot3d() I get a plot, but it is not
interactive. Furthermore, changes to par3d("FOV"=my.new.value) do
nothing. I suspect something is wrong with the rendering engine or
interface to it. I do have an Nvidia driver installed and compiz works
correctly on the desktop.

overlaying points and lines on a surface3d rgl plot with axes
Hi R users and experts,
I am interested in learning more about the use of 3D plots. Specifically, I
want to add points and lines to a surface plot. And get the axes and labels
plotted also. Here is what I have tried with an example data set :
library(rgl)
vol2 <- 2*volcano # Exaggerate the relief
library(reshape)
mvol2 <- melt(vol2)
str(mvol2)
# First, persp and persp3d plots do not succeed

movie3d in rgl object 'movie' not found
Hello,
I am trying to save a .gif movie using movie3d from the package {rgl}. I am
using the following code combined with the globe example on the ?movie3d
page. I've installed ImageMagick and the directory seems to be working
properly, i.e. when I do Sys.getenv("PATH"), C:\\Program Files
(x86)\\ImageMagick-6.7.0-Q16 shows up.

Help with rgl
Hi,
I don't know much about the RGL package, and I have read the
documentation and tried some parameters, with no luck... I would like
to generate a movie from a 3D object (code below), where the vortex A
is closer to the observer, and then the object rotates and the B
vortex gets closer. I would like to capture this movie to a file.
By the way, I am not being able to insert unicode text

Rgl and plotmath symbols (via sprites): a trial
Dear all,
Below is some code where I try to get plotmath symbols in an rgl plot. Duncan
Murdoch kindly suggested to use a "sprite" for this. As you can see, on can get
it to work, but my knowledge about grid and rgl is too limited to perfectly
solve the problem.
1) As you can see (please rotate the plot a little bit so that (0,0,0) is "in front"),

rgl: axis/viewport/box problems in persp3d()
Dear expeRts,
I am a new user of rgl, below is my first trial to plot a simple function in 3d.
I managed to put the axes in the right locations, but:
(1) The xlab, ylab, and zlab arguments are ignored; how can I put in axes labels?
(2) Since I removed the axes in persp3d() the viewport is too small; is it possible
to keep the size of the viewport?
(3) The box is not correctly drawn, there

rgl movimiento

Plotting a cloud/fog of variable density in rgl
Hi everyone,
I want to plot a 3D interpolation of the concentration of aquatic
organisms. My goal would be to have the result represented as clouds
with a density proportional to the abundance of organisms, so that I
could fly (well, swim actually ;) ) through the scene and see the
patches here and there. Basically, I want to do something like this:

rgl: How to position a window during open3d call
Dear all,
The documentation on the function open3d in the rgl package, reads:
open3d opens a new rgl device, and sets the parameters as requested.
I want the new rgl device (window) to be sized and positioned in a specific
place on my screen. So, I try to set the "windowRect" parameter as follows:
> library("rgl")
> open3d(windowRect=c(100,100,500,500))

rgl.Sweave not producing transparency in pdf plots with alpha
Hi Folks,
I'm trying to get rgl.Sweave to produce plots with transparency.
However, it just seems to produce opaque plots when pdf is the output
type. Perhaps this is a known issue? I'll just use .png in the
meantime, but wanted to see about this, as I didn't see it in the
documentation (though it's possible I missed it).
Thanks,
Allie

rgl.postscript generating pdf: floating xlab, font size, transparency
Hello,
I very much enjoy rgl! But when converting the screen output to pdf
using rgl.postscript I have encountered three problems:
(1) I don't seem to have control over font sizes and point sizes (of
added points) in the pdf output. I tried cex from "plot" but that
does not have an effect. Initially I got some plots where fonts and
especially points were far too small. But now

scatterplot3d with categorical data
Dear users,
I'm trying to produce a 3d bar plot but the x and y dimensions have categorical
data -- so I only want 3 points on each axis. So I try:
require(scatterplot3d)
mymat<-data.frame(
x=c(1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,3),
y=c(1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3),
z=c(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9))

type="h", lwd=5, pch=" ",

How do I connect dots in the RGL package?
Hi all,
I just started using the rgl package in R, and I need to know how I connect
the dots I created. A simple line from one co?rdinate (x0,y0,z0) to another
(x1,y1,z1) will do. I tried using the code rgl.lines, but it doesn't accept
lines that don't stem from O (0,0,0). Please help!
Thanks!

rgl.postscript
Hi,
I am having an issue when creating a postscript file from RGL window. It
seems to cut off some of the axis labels. Here is the code I am using.
I created a 3D plot using RGL_0.71 with R 2.5 on Windows XP.
z1<-c(5,4,1,4.5,2,3,2,1,1)
z2<-c(6,8,7,7.5,5,3.5,4,1,1)
z3<-c(3,2,4,7,3,4.5,6,2,3)
x1<-seq(1,9)
x2<-seq(1,9)
x3<-seq(10,18)
y1<-seq(8,0)
y2<--1*y1

rgl: coordinating and saving viewpoints, zoom, scale for multiple images
Context: I have two or more rgl-based views of a given data set, perhaps
fitting different
models, or showing different things across views. I want to be able to
hand-rotate, zoom, scale
one view to something I like, and then show the other views with
matching viewpoints and scaling.
so that one could flip back/forth among graphs and see only the relevant
differences.

Help with RGL package problem
Hello,
I have been experiencing an odd error with the RGL package that I cannot
figure out. I have searched without luck for fixes to this problem on
Rseek, Google, and the R-help-list.
RGL used to work on my machine about a month ago. It was a very useful
tool. The graphics device will not initialize now, and I cannot figure out
why.

Trying to save both an rgl plot and a bar plot errors
Hello,
I am basically using a script that is designed to first create an rgl 3d scatter plot followed by a barplot on the same data. After this is done, the program is to first save the barplot as a .tiff file then to save the rgl 3d graph as a .png file. Once this is done, it is to repeat this 3d plot and barplot combo with saving 49 more times. The plotting script excerpt will be posted at the

Rcmdr and scatter3d
Hi folks,
I'd like to use scatter3d (which is in R commander) to plot more than one
dataset in the same graph, each dataset with a different color. The kind
of stuff you would do with "holdon" in Matlab.
I read a recent message that was posted to this list with a similar
problem, but I couldn't understand the reply. Could someone give me one
example? How do you plot subgroups

Can a dynamic graphic produced by rgl be saved?
Dear r-helpers,
Can one save a dynamic graphic produced by rgl, e.g.:
open3d(); x <- sort(rnorm(1000)); y <- rnorm(1000); z <-
rnorm(1000) + atan2(x,y); plot3d(x, y, z, col=rainbow(1000), size=2)
as a dynamic figure that can be embedded in a pdf?

rgl update: please test!
(This is bcc'd to a list of people who have had problems with rgl lately
or who are known to be big users; not cc'd, so you don't all get cc'd
all the responses on the R-devel list).
I've just put together a test build of rgl, and put it on my web site as
