Improving data processing efficiency
Hi everyone!
I have a question about data processing efficiency.
My data are as follows: I have a data set on quarterly institutional
ownership of equities; some of them have had recent IPOs, some have not
(I have a binary flag set). The total dataset size is 700k+ rows.
My goal is this: For every quarter since issue for each IPO, I need to
find a "matched" firm in the same

rbind/cbind
Dear list,
I wonder if there a better way to have rbind/cbind/append to create
the first element (if it is empty) instead of doing the following in a
loop?
for (i in 1:10) {
if (i == 1) {
aRow = SomeExpression(i)
} else {
aRow = rbind(aRow,SomeExpression(i))
}
}
Thanks

select element from each row of the matrix
I have a 5 column matrix like
12 10 8 6 3
10 9 8 7 5
14 NA 4 NA NA NA
15 NA 10 NA 5
...
I want to select the position of the first entry for each row <=5
for example, for the first row, I want to select the last element and return
its position as 5;
for th e third row, I want to select the third element and return its
position as 3;
similarly for the 4th row, I want to select the fifth

Contatenating data frames with partial overlap in variable names
Greetings to all.
I need to concatenate data frames that do not have all the same variable
names, there is only a partial overlap in the variables. So, for
example, if i have two data frames, a and b, that look like the following:
> a
a b
1 1 4
2 2 5
3 3 6
4 4 7
5 5 8
> b
c a
1 1 10
2 2 11
3 3 12
4 4 13
5 5 14
i want to concatenate them by row, without any matching, so that the

New Variable from Several Existing Variables
I am new to R, but have been using SAS for years. In this transition period,
I am finding myself pulling my hair out to do some of the simplest things.
An example of this is that I need to generate a new variable based on the
outcome of several existing variables in a data row. In other words, if the
variable in all three existing columns are "Yes", then then the new variable
should

Need ideas on how to show spikes in my data and how to code it in R
Hi
I have recently been analyzing birthweight data from a clinic. The
data has obvious defects in that there is digit preference on certain
weights making them overrepresented. This shows as spikes in the
histogram on certain well rounded weights like 2, 2.5, 3, etc. I
would like to show this to government officials but can't figure out
how I should present the finding in an easy to

Merging two dataframes
Hi All,
Newbie question for you all but i have been looking at the archieves and the
help dtuff to get a rough idea of what i want to do
I would like to merge two dataframes together based on a keyed variable in
one dataframe linking to the other dataframe. Only some of the cases will
match but i would like to keep the others as well.
My dataframes have 67 and 28 cases respectively and i would

Canon multifunction printers / samba 3.0.2a / AIX 5.2ML2
Hello,
I have problems setting up a canon multifunction ir7200. When I print the
windows test page, I have something like "smiley" "arrow" "arow" "smiley"
"arrow" name_of_the_samba_spool "smileys" driver.dll etc,etc,etc, on a
single line.
Did somebody used such a multifunction with Samba ? Below is a (long)
description of what I did.

deleting an arow added to a graphic
I know this has got to be simple, but I have a added an arrow to a graph
with:
arrows(5,8,8, predict(lmfit,data.frame(x=8)), length=0.1)
but its in the wrong position, correcting it and running again adds an new
arrow (which is what you would expect) so how do I
a) edit the existing arrow, and
b) delete it all together
As so often seems to be the case, some of the simplist things seem also to

Computing loop trip counts with Scalar evolution
Hello.
I tried to get the trip count of a loop with Scalar evolution. I got inspired from
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13834364/how-to-get-loop-bounds-in-llvm .
However the analysis described there doesn't work well for the second inner loop of
thes function below (although if we declare Bcols a short it works well):
void MatMul(int Arows, int Acols, int Brows, int

dataframe in loop
hello all:
I would like to thank those who helped me out of the string
problem..but now I got another problem.
I used R to query from SQL and got a list of crsp_fundno of G-style mutual
funds which is still alive. I use the following codes and got what I want:
library(RODBC)
channel<-odbcConnect("CRSPFUND")
g.crspfundno<-sqlQuery(channel,"select crsp_fundno from Fund_style

linear interpolation of multiple random time series
Hi all,
Looking for tips on how I might more optimally solve this. I have
time series data (samples from a force sensor) that are not
guaranteed to be sampled at the same time values across trials. ex.
trial time x
1 1 1
1 5 4
1 7 9
1 12 20
2 1 0
2 3 5
2 9 10
2 13 14
2 19 22
2 24 32
Within each trial I'd like to use linear interpolation between each
successive time sample to fill in

self-heal trouble after changing arbiter brick
Hi Karthik,
Thank you for your reply. The heal is still undergoing, as the /var/log/glusterfs/glustershd.log keeps growing, and there's a lot of pending entries in the heal info.
The gluster version is 3.10.9 and 3.10.10 (the version update in progress). It doesn't have info summary [yet?], and the heal info is way too long to attach here. (It takes more than 20 minutes just to collect

R crashes with >kud<-kernelUD(data, h="LSCV") script
Hi,
I am looking to perform a kernel density analysis in R, following the script that a friend of mine is using successfully. However, unlike for her, when I enter >kud<-kernelUD(data, h="LSCV"), R crashes and closes every time. This does not happen when I perform a different kernel analysis (>kud<-kernelUD(data))..
I have tried to un-install and re-install R, but it still

Glusterfs/CTDB/Samba file locking problem
Hi guys,
I try to set up two identical installed up to date CentOS6 machines with Glusterfs/CTDB/Samba .
I have set up Glusterfs and it works. I have set up CTDB from CentOS and it seems to work too.
Samba is AD integrated and works mainly.
The main problem is that file locking seem to not work between the machines at all. If two Win7 clients try to open an document
from the same Samba server

t.test in a loop
Hi All,
I've been having a little trouble with creating a loop that will run a a
series of t.tests for inspection,
Below is the code i've tried, and some checks i've looked at.
I've used the get(paste()) idea as i was told previously that the use of the
eval should try and be avoided.
I've run a single syntax to check that my systax is correct and works
without any problems
