New version of X11, png and jpeg
R-devel has new versions of the X11(), png() and jpeg() devices on Unix-alikes. The intention is that these are used identically to the previous versions (which remain available) but will produce higher-quality output with more features. Pros: Antialiasing of text and lines (can be turned off) but no blurring of fills. Buffering of the X11 display and fast repainting from a backing image.

par() defaults in Rprofile
Dear List, I've tried to set default par() in .Rprofile by putting the following in the .First function: setHook(packageEvent("graphics", "onLoad"), function(...) {graphics::par(cex.axis=1.5, cex.lab=2, las=1)} ) My goal was to set par() defaults without opening a device everytime at startup. However, the next plot I create doesn't show these

suppress startup messages from default packages
Hi all, several packages print messages during loading. How do I avoid to see them when the packages are in the defaultPackages? Here is an example. With this in ~/.Rprofile ,----[ ~/.Rprofile ] | old <- getOption("defaultPackages") | options(defaultPackages = c(old, "filehash")) | rm(old) `---- I get as last line when starting R: ,---- | filehash: Simple key-value

R's X11 Device Properties
Hello, This is an issue that is at the interface of R, X, and my window manager (either icewm or openbox, both latest versions). I am running R 2.10.1 on Ubuntu 9.10. My goal: When an X11 device is started in R (e.g., by simply calling plot), I would like for the resulting window to be in the "always on top" state, and for focus not to switch to it. Configuring this behavior is

add more data to a data file, problem with .Rprofile
Hi, Is there a way to incorporate an R object x to a file already containing R objects? It seems that 'save' is not capable to do this. If I save x to a file containing previously saved data, then I will lose this data. I use the funcion hsv in .Rprofile but it is recognized. Couriously, if I source .Rprofile when R is already running I do not get any error message. Thank you.

Rtemp directories accumulating over time
Hola! There is a nuisance that the number of directories with name starting Rtmp (and always empty) in my temp directory is increasing over time. I put the following in my .Rprofile: tmp0001 <- tempdir() setHook( packageEvent("base","onUnload"), function(...) unlink( tmp0001, recursive=TRUE) ) which solves part of the problem, but not all. So there are also

R newbie configuration
I think I did enough reading on my Own about startup ( part of the morning And most of this afternoon ) to not feel uncomfortable asking for confirmation of my understanding of this startup stuff. Obviously, the startup process is more complicated Than below but, for my R newbie purposes, It seems like I can think of the startup process as follows : Suppose my home directory =

Registering S3 class from external package
The package I'm working on can extract data from external packages but would otherwise have no dependency on them. However, I desire to be able to dispatch based on an external S3 class if its package is attached (.First.lib). My code is S4-based and its package has NAMESPACE. Registering the external class prior to the other package being attached doesn't seem to work so I am attempting

X11 and vfonts modules on AIX 5.2
I am trying to get R-2.2.1 to pass make check on an AIX 5.2 at work (I know R-2.2.1 is not the latest release, but I encountered make errors in my attempts to install either R-2.3.0 or the R-patched_2006-05-10 on the version of AIX I am on. I will post those errors in a separate posting from this.) So far, configure and make finish without error for R-2.2.1 using gnu make, gcc-4.1.0, and

R_x11.so
Hi the list, I just installed the R-1.7.0-1mdk.i516.rpm package on a mdk 9.1. All looks fine until I try to launch some graphics functions as png() or even demo( graphics). I receive the following example message: > png() Error in png() : R_X11 module cannot be loaded In addition: Warning message: unable to load shared library "/usr/lib/R/modules/R_X11.so":

[R] Failure to load X11 module in Fedora 13.
I've googled around the archives for R-help and R-sig Fedora and found that a lot of people have had the same errors I've gotten when starting up the X11() module: Error in X11() : X11 module cannot be loaded In addition: Warning message: In X11() : unable to load shared library '/usr/lib/R/modules//R_X11.so': /usr/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: undefined symbol: FT_Select_Size But I

Conflict in .Rprofile documentation FAQ vs. Help?
Hi folks, I note that in the general FAQ's we have 7.25 Why did my .Rprofile stop working when I updated R? Did you read the NEWS file? For functions that are not in the base package you need to specify the correct package namespace, since the code will be run before the packages are loaded. E.g., ps.options(horizontal = FALSE) help.start() needs to be

unable to load shared library '/usr/local/lib/R/modules//R_X11.so'
Hi, I downloaded a binary version of R for my Solaris 10 box (from http://www.sunfreeware.com/programlistsparc10.html#R), and everything looked fine during the installation. However, I got a "X11 module cannot be loaded" error when I attempted to save a graph to be a png file. Does it look like a problem of the Solaris box or a problem of the installation (missing library file)?

Segmentation fault/buffer overflow with fix() in Fedora Core 5 from Extras repository
The Fedora Extras update of R found its way onto my systems today and I noted that fix() and edit() no longer work. There is a program crash that closes up R, but it does not leave a core file. I've tested by turning off SELinux, it had no effect. Do you see it too? What do you think? It happens on both systems I've tested. As far as I know, both of these systems are up-to-date. I

grid.cap() requires more time?
Dear all, I am puzzled by the following behavior of the new grid.cap() function, which appears to run out of time when capturing the output of a graphic. It works fine if I introduce a Sys.sleep(1) before executing more code, library(grid) quartz() grid.circle(gp=gpar(fill="black")) gg <- grid.cap() dev.new() grid.raster(gg) ## completely blank gg[gg!="white"] ## indeed
