Different results in glm() probit model using vector vs. two-column matrix response
Hi - I am fitting a probit model using glm(), and the deviance and residual degrees of freedom are different depending on whether I use a binary response vector of length 80 or a two-column matrix response (10 rows) with the number of success and failures in each column. I would think that these would be just two different ways of specifying the same model, but this does not appear to be the case.

Question about subsetting data
I have a data set(Bill) of with 1 variable (var1), with 100 obs that are in ascending order. I want to sample every 10 observations and save them in 10 different groups such as
Group1 is obs 1-10
Group 2 is obs-11-20
and so on.
First step is to subset them into the 10 groups, then calculate the mean of var1 for each of the 10 groups. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

[LLVMdev] Online doxygen out of date?

One more that might also be regenerated(?), but I noticed today that the live demo at http://llvm.org/demo/index.cgi now returns errors if you check the "Show LLVM C++ API code" box.

predict.glm returns different results for the same model
Hi all,
Very surprising (to me!) and mystifying result from predict.glm(): the
predictions vary depending on whether or not I use ns() or
splines::ns(). Reprex follows:
library(splines)
set.seed(12345)
dat <- data.frame(claim = rbinom(1000, 1, 0.5))
mns <- c(3.4, 3.6)
sds <- c(0.24, 0.35)
dat$wind <- exp(rnorm(nrow(dat), mean = mns[dat$claim + 1], sd =
sds[dat$claim + 1]))
dat <-

error bars
Dear Help
I'm new to R (from matlab)...using windows XP.
I've tried to work out, to no avail, 4 things:
1) rotating the numbers on axes...something to do with par(str) ??
2) how to close a window having opened one e.g. windows(7,7)
3) how to manipulate the key (e.g. dots, lines etc) on the legend. Using pch just gives me the same key for all functions on a plot.
i.e. legend

newbie: remove column with low mean from a matrix
Dear all,
Sorry to bother you with one more newbie question.
I have a dataobject with several hundreds of columns. I want to remove
columns with a mean of the column values below a certain value:
> a<- c(1,2,3,4,5,6)
> b<-c(2,4,6,8,10,12)
> c<- c(3,6,9,12,15,18)
> test<- as.matrix(cbind(a, b, c))
> mean(a)

> mean(b)
[1] 7
> mean(c)

Loop with variable index
I have a list of 20 values. The first time through a loop I want to find the
mean and stnd.dev. of the first two values; the second time through the loop
I want to find the mean and stnd. dev. of the first 3 values, etc. until
the last time through the loop I want to find the mean and stnd. dev. of all
20 values, so I end up with 19 means and stnd. deviations.
How would I construct such a loop?

My new server
I bought a very cheap server yesterday -
an HP ProLiant micro server for 160 euro
(280 euro with 120 cashback, for some reason).
But I was surprised when I opened the box
to find it didn't come with keyboard or mouse,
and doesn't have the old keyboard/mouse sockets,
but requires USB versions.
Is that the norm nowadays?
Is it possible to convert the old keyboard/mouse plugs?
Also there is

Vectors with equal sd but different slope
Hi,
what I would need are 2 vector pairs (x,y) and (x1,y1). x and x1 must have
the same sd. y and y1 should also exhibit the same sd's but different ones
as x and x1. Plotting x,y and x1,y1 should produce a plot with 2 vectors
having a different slope. Plotting both vector pairs in one plot with fixed
axes should reveal the different slope.
many thanks

Trying to understand factors
I'm trying to figure out about factors, however the on-line documentation is
rather sparse. I guess, factors are intended for grouping arrays members into
categories, which R names "Levels". And so we have:
* state <- c("tas", "sa", "qld", "nsw", "nsw", "nt", "wa", "wa",

[LLVMdev] Online doxygen out of date?
Hi all,
I'm having a bit of trouble with the online doxygen documentation. As far is I
know, it should reflect current svn trunk. However, it seems out of date. For
example, the ExtractValueInst [1] is not a UnaryInstruction yet and still
takes Value* as indices.
To add to the confusing, the mainpage [2] says it is documentation version
"2.1svn" which seems even more weird.

Installation Error with Bioconductor on R
Hi, I am trying to install Bioconductor onto R version 2.7.0 for Windows. I installed R, then followed the instructions on http://www.bioconductor.org/download, which state that you should type the following:
source("http://bioconductor.org/biocLite.R")
biocLite()
When I do that, I get the following error:

HP MicroServer
A bit OT, but I'm running CentOS-5.6 on this machine
(in fact on two of them)
and it seems to run perfectly -
I've had no problems at all.
Except that I'd like to add a second ethernet port,
and am not sure where one can find a card that will fit this machine.
As far as I can see, it requires a half-height PCIe card,
which seems to be rather a rare animal.
