Wine and XP
I have Wine working, and my Windows XP-installation mounted
as read only. Reading the FAQ, I noticed: "DON'T configure Wine
to use an NT-based Windows install (NT, Win2K, WinXP)."
So... is it futile to try to get XP-applications running on my
Linux-box? Should I install them from Wine, and if so, how?

RFC: video call recommendations
I run CentOS at home, not just at work... Anyway, I've got a friend in
Chicago who recently mentioned that they'd like to do videocalling. Now,
I've heard of skype, but a quick google says there's some problems on
Linux. I also see ekiga, and aMSN.
Anyone here run such a beast, and have any recommendations or comments?
Obviously, must work on CentOS, not Ubuntu, or Fedora, or

Open extra ports on firewall?
Hi,
I'm using the preconfigured firewall that comes with CentOS 5. I
configure it with system-config-securitylevel-tui, close all ports
except SSH, and then open only the ones I need.
Right now, on one of my desktops, I've installed AMSN, which requires
opening a series of ports. I've configured the app to use ports 7000 to
7010 (TCP and UDP). When running

MSN Messenger in Wine?
It's marked "garbage" in the appdb, because the installer doesn't run
without quite a bit of tweaking. But anyway ...
I want to get MSN working in Wine. It's for my girlfriend's daughter,
whose XP box just got trashed by a virus/rootkit (spread via MSN, of
course). So we've saved her stuff and we're nuking and paving the box.
I would like to use Ubuntu instead of

aMSN segfaults at login after configuring my home network
After configuring my home network, aMSN segfaults.
I posted this issue originally in the aMSN forums under this thread:
http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7593
I was told that my issue is related to SAMBA, referring this thread:
http://www.amsn-project.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6343
After uninstalling SAMBA, aMSN stops segfaulting and works as expected.
After installing it

Problem or no ?!
Hello,
i don't know if the problem is imputable to compiz as they say .. but it
can be the occasion in order to demonstrate it or to make clarity;
i use amsn, and i have noticed that the panel doesn't work correctly
with compiz: it opens but the click doesn't select emoticons; the
development team of amsn affirms that it's a bug of compiz and beryl.
I don't know if

Hi,
I thing this issue has been mentioned several times in this list but I
can''t see any conclusion.
In about 10% of all runs Puppet randomly fails on some (random) File
resource either with this error:

Strange behavior scale and switcher plugin after update
Hi,
I have noticed a strange behavior:
after the added one of the options "window_match" in scale and switcher
plugins; these do not show some windows like gmplayer or amsn's windows

I had problems with 2.6.19 kernel, appears to be some "binaries" problems
about iptables and kernel modules, then I pass to try the 2.6.18.3 kernel

negative binomial family glm R and STATA
Dear Lister,
I am facing a strange problem fitting a GLM of the negative binomial
family. Actually, I tried to estimate theta (the scale parameter)
through glm.nb from MASS and could get convergence only relaxing the
convergence tolerance to 1e-3. With warning messages:
glm1<-glm.nb(nbcas~.,data=zonesdb4,control=glm.control(epsilon = 1e-3))
There were 25 warnings (use warnings() to see

shoudl I use apply, sapply, etc instead of a "for loop"?
I have been trying to learn the various "apply" functions but am still learning their appropriate use. I appreciate any help the R community can offer me. Sorry for the length of this post.

I have data on my hard drive organized in the following manner:
The data pertains to many different "samples" of data. (e.g. sample 001, sample, 002, sample 003, etc.)

change puppet dashboard listen interfac
Hi,
is there some easy way to make the puppet dashboard web-server to listen only on
the loopback interface? if I want to run it behind apache (to provide
authentication) I don''t want to have it bound to all interface but only to the
loopback and pass the requests through the proxy.
cheers Antony.
