truly object oriented programming in R
Good morning! I recently implemented a KD tree in JAVA for faster kernel density estimation (part of the code follows). It went well. To hook it with R, however, has proved more difficult. My question is: is it possible to implement the algorithm in R? My impression seems to indicate no as the code requires a complete class-object framework that R does not support. But is there an R package or

Giving a first good impression of R to Social Scientists
Dear all, in the coming Winter Semester, I will be a teaching assistant for a course in Survival Analysis. My job will be to do the lab sessions. The software used for these lab sessions will be R. Most of the students have a background in social sciences and the only stats package they used so far is most likely SPSS. So I assume they might be quite surprised the first time they see R

glmmBUGS: logistic regression on proportional data
Hello, I am trying to run a logistic regression with random effects on proportional data in glmmBUGS. I am a newcomer to this package, and wondered if anyone could help me specify the model correctly. I am trying to specify the response variable, /yseed/, as # of successes out of total observations... but I suspect that given the error below, that is not correct. Also, Newsect should be a

gsub for numeric characters in string
Dear all, I have what is a bit of a confusing question, so I hope that I can explain clearly. Thank you for your help in advance. I would like to do a replacement procedure on several strings, but the way that I am currently going about it is not working. I have defined "len", which is a series comprising the lengths of different items, all preceded by a colon. > len [1]

Bandwidth - Kernel Density Estimation
Dear R helpers I am having recovery rates as given below and I am trying to estimate the Loss Given Default (LGD) and for this I am using Kernel Density estimation method. recovery_rates = c(0.61,0.12,0.10,0.68,0.87,0.19,0.84,0.81,0.87,0.54,0.08,0.65,0.91, 0.56,0.52,0.30,0.41,0.24,0.66,0.35,0.36,0.64,0.55,0.43,0.36,0.28,0.89,0.11,0.23,0.07,

Now another question regarding the Foreign package
Hi, Because I'm new to R and trying to move off of SPSS, I have another question. I downloaded the "Foreign" package which I understand reads in various datasets from programs such as SPSS and SAS. There isn't much documentation that I can find regarding the specifics of this in the online docs, but I assume that it is like read.table. So, here is what I wrote and here is

How to prevent llvm's default optimization
Thanks. I have checked the hook DAGCombiner::isMulAddWithConstProfitable And I think the above condition is too aggressive. // If the add only has one use, this would be OK to do. if (AddNode.getNode()->hasOneUse()) return true; Shall we make it to if (AddNode.getNode()->hasOneUse() && TargetLowering.isCheaperCommuteAddMul(......)) return true; The virtual hook

FW: summary statistics for groups
Kirsten, this may not be the most elegant approach, but I think I would create dummy variables on the fly for each disease code you have, then use the "with" function to get means. Give this a try: # setup some fake data as an example icd9 <- c(rep("dis1",4), rep("dis2",5), rep("dis3",3)) n <- length(icd9) exposure <- rnorm(n) working <-

Samba priting problem, might be windows printer defintion
Hi Sunmanagers I still have a problem with my samba printing mechanism. When I log on some windows machines it will not print. I have found out that when I print from some machines while the print queu is stopped then the jobs are saved there as root. When I print from other machines they are saved as my name. I can print from dos by using echo something > \\server\printer. I can print with

Traversing KD-tree (or equivalent) for radius-based search
Hi, I'm trying to implement the DBSCAN algorithm to get O(N*LogN) complexity and I'd need a spatial tree of some sort (kd,r,bd..), or a function that computes radius-based search on spatial data, i.e. given a radius eps finds ALL the points which fall in the corresponding hypersphere centered on the current examined point. Is there a package with this features? So far I found RANN

binary tree construction in R
Hi all, I'm very new to R and I'm trying to construct a threaded binary tree using recursive functions. I'm very confused was wondering if anyone had any R sample code they would share. I've come across a lot of C++ code(nothing in R) and this is not helping. best, MK -- View this message in context:

bwplot [lattice]: how to get different y-axis scales for each row?
Dear expeRts, How can I get ... (1) different y-axis scales for each row (2) while having the same y-axis scales for different columns? I coulnd't manage to do this with relation="free" [which gives (1) but not (2)]. I also tried relation="sliced", but it did not give the same y-axis scales within each row (see the fourth row). Further, it "separates" the
