How to test for significance of random effects?
Dear list members,
I'm interested in showing that within-group statistical dependence is
negligible, so I can use ordinary linear models without including random
effects. However, I can find no mention of testing a model with vs.
without random effects in either Venable & Ripley (2002) or Pinheiro and
Bates (2000). Our in-house statisticians are not familiar with this,
either,

Newbie Correspondence Analysis Question
I'm experienced in statistics, but I am a first-time R user. I would like to use R for correspondence analysis. I have installed R (Mac OSX). I have used the package installer to install the CA package. I have run the following line with no errors to read in the data for a table:
NonLuxury <- read.table("/Users/myUserName/Desktop/nonLuxury.data.txt")

Unable to upgrade ZFS pool to feature flags, SPA version 5000, on stable/9 @ r243825
Hi,
I installed FreeBSD/amd64 9.1-RELEASE yesterday.
I chose to do a manual installation due to the use of ZFS.
I checked out stable/9 and recompiled both world and GENERIC kernel.
Said kernel and world was installed without any problems.
System is still up & running, with uname -a revealing r243825.
I then decided to upgrade the root pool to feature flags, SPA version
5000, and was not so

How to update an old unsupported package
Hi all,
I have a package that is specific to a task I was repetitively using a
few years ago.
I now needed to run it again with new data.
However I am told it was built with an older version or R and will not work.
How can I tweak the package so it will run on 11.1?
It was a one-off product and has not been maintained.
Is there a way to "unpackage" it and repackage it to work?

Why is AIC from lmer 2 less than that from lme?
I'm migrating to lmer() from lme(). I have noticed that AIC values from
lmer() are 2 units smaller than those reported by lme(). Could someone
please explain why?
The issue can be replicated with the first example from Pinheiro & Bates
(2000) Mixed-effects models in S and S-plus.
library(nlme)
Rail2 <- Rail
summary(lme(travel~1,data=Rail2,random=~1|Rail)) # AIC = 128.177

Robust measures of goodness of fit?
Dear all,
I have been using rlm() for robust regression. Could someone please
suggest an appropriate measure of goodness-of-fit [1]? All I've found
after trawling the web, literature databases, and previous r-help posts,
is the "robust R^2" on pp. 362-363 of the S-plus manual, which is
available at

memory issues with samba 3.0.10
I'm still having problems with that memory issue using 3.0.10 with v.2
of the printing patch + the one line patch from Jerome Borsboom. My
production server has completely frozen a couple times in the past
couple weeks, and did so again this morning. This time before
restarting samba I removed the tdb files in /var/lib/samba/printing/*
as Jerry mentioned this might help the queue not

CUPS printing problem with Wine on FC3
I'm having trouble getting any application to print from Wine to a CUPS
networked printer.
I'm using Fedora Core 3.
Firstly, the printer works fine under Linux.
What I have tried so far is:
Install the latest wine rpm (wine-20050211-1fc3winehq.i686.rpm)
Install from source with cups-devel package installed as per the posts I

I followed this workaround, which is nicely summarized at
https://github.com/postfixadmin/postfixadmin/issues/381#issuecomment-678269198
Yet, not all errors are suppressed this way:
$ doveadm pw
doveadm(olav): Error: net_connect_unix(/run/dovecot/stats-writer) failed:

That makes sense. Explains why it is not there today.

template homedir confusion
Hi,
I have set up Samba 3.0.0 with ADS integration. It works fine, with a
workaround for a small oddity.
I use template homedirs like this:
template homedir = /home/%D/%U
On a soon-to-be-retired server running 3.0a19, I have a directory LOCAL
(as in LOCAL.DOMAIN.NAME) containing the homedirs - this works as
expected from the output of "getent passwd", which shows the homedirs of

plot dates in x-axis
Hallo,
I am trying to plot dates in x-axis. The format of my dates are in dd/mm/yyyy. At first I install zoo package. After R reads my file, I change the default format of dates to the format that I have,
>myfile<-read.csv
>DATE<-as.Date(DATE,format="%d/%m/%Y")
up till now everything goes ok; when however I go and plot for example
