Convert "ragged" list to matrix
Hi, I have a list made up of character strings with each item a different length (each item is between 1and 6 strings long). Is there a way to convert a "ragged" list to a matrix such that each item is its own row? Here is a simple example: a=list(); a[[1]] = c("a", "b", "c"); a[[2]] = c("d", "e"); a[[3]] = c("f",

Deleting multiple rows based on a variable
Hello, I have a dataset which consists of 9 columns (variables) and 35 rows (observations). I am doing a simple linear regression of one variable on the other. There are some observations that are outliers and I would like to remove them based on another variable (it's a unique, numeric variable). How do you tell R to remove multiple rows (observations) based on a variable value?

Parenthesis around date/time using chron?
Hi, I've been using the chron package to convert excel time into month/day/year and h:m:s formats, specifically for use as axis labels. I've come across something I don't quite understand. ### Here are some excel times: dat = c(39083, 39083.00694, 39083.01389, 39083.02083, 39083.02778, 39083.03472, 39083.04167, 39083.04861, 39083.05556, 39083.0625 ) ### I create

using chron vector with boxplot
Hi, I'm having trouble using dates (created using library(chron)) as groupings for a boxplot. I have 10 repeat measurements of a variable within an individual day. The measurements were done over 10 days. I would like to plot the measurements as a box and wisker plot (using boxplot or something similar) where the days (as chron object) would be the grouping and the repeated measurements

Italicize Greek symbols in axis
Hello there, Is there any way to italicize Greek symbols such as mu in axis? From the help files of mathematical anotations: "Note that bold, italic and bolditalic do not apply to symbols, and hence not to the Greek symbols such as mu which are displayed in the symbol font. They also do not apply to numeric constants.", it seems that it cannot be done. Thanks, Bingzhang Chen

Mixed Latin, Greek and subscript characters in axis label
Dear R-helpers, I have been trying to figure out how to plot a graph with an axis label consisting of a mixture of Latin, Greek and subscript characters. Specifically, I need to write A[beta]{1-42}, where A is Latin script A, [beta] is Greek lower case beta and {1-42} is subscript '1-42'. I can use xlab=expression(beta[1-42]) and obtain the [beta]{1-42} part of the label. But, I can't

Mtext doesn't display characters in italic when I use a greek symbol
Following on from my previous mail! plot(1:10,1:10) mtext("title", side=3, adj=0, font=3, cex=1.5) This works as expected and puts the font in italics. tag <- "A)" suffix <- "genea::" plot(1:10,1:10) mtext(bquote(.(tag) ~ Delta * .(suffix)), side=3, adj=0, font=3, cex=1.5) Here, the font isn't in italics, it's normal. I presume this is some

persp and greek symbols in the axes labels
Hello, I am plotting a 3D function using persp and I would like to use greek symbols in the axes labels. I have found examples like this one on the web: plot(0,0,xlab=expression(kappa[lambda]),ylab=substitute(paste(phi,"=",true,sigma),list(true=5))) this works well with plot but not with persp: with the command persp(M,theta = -20,phi =

greek symbols using pch
Hi R-users, In a plot, can I specify pch to be a greek symbol? (I looked at show.pch() in the Hmisc package but couldn't see the right symbols in there). If not, I guess I can get around this using text(x,y,expression()). cheers!, Matt. Greek symbols not generated on quartz device (PR#6708)
Full_Name: Mark St. John Version: 1.8.1 OS: Macintosh 10.3.3 Submission from: (NULL) (63.135.5.86) After upgrading from Mac OS 10.2.8 to 10.3.3 a program I wrote to generate plots will no longer display annotated Greek symbols. I'm using parse() and expression() to convert variable text in to symbols and it would appear that both functions work reasonably well except that Greek characters

graph label greek symbol failure
Readers, Previous questions about this requirement have been for m$ users, my failure occurs using linux. I have tried to add the delta (?) symbol to the y axis label and the result is &D, using the command: ...ylab="?t"... Any advice please? rhelp at conference.jabber.org mandriva 2008 r 251 (27-06-07)

Italicized greek symbols in PDF plots
I know that this has been asked before in other variations but I just can't seem to figure out my particular application from previous posts. My apologies if I have missed the answer to this question somewhere in the archives. I have indeed looked. I am running Ubuntu 11.04, with R 2.12.1 and ESS+Emacs. For journal formatting requirements, I need to italicize all the greek letters in any

Greek letter included in a character vector
Hello, In the past I have used "expression" to include greek letters in axis labels, but this time I need to include the greek letter as part of a legend. Basically, I need to create the following vector to rename the levels of a factor: c("Interferon-gamma", "IL-10", "IL-5"), where "gamma" obviously needs to be printed as the greek letter

Bold greek letters using plotmath
I'm trying to annotate some graphics using plotmath and finding out that the code I'm using isn't bolding the greek letters - it bolds the rest (once I adjusted the numerics to characters), it's just failing on the greek characters. Any suggestions welcomed. Jim Price. Cardiome Pharma Corp. Test code: plot(1:5, type = 'n') # The not bold version text(2, 2:4, cex =

surprising behaviour of "bgroup": sets all in greek letters
Dear R user community I wanted to use "bgroup" for plotting a math formula with a big "{" on the left, and nothing on the right. i used text( 10, 10, pos=4, cex=1.8, expression(F(x) == bgroup("{", x, "")), ...) on a 40 x 20 plot. surprisingly, bgroup sets "Phi(xi) = { xi" i.e. replaces alphabetic characters with greek letters in the entire

Greek letter
Hi everyone. I'm trying to use small letter phi in a graph produced in R. However, the small letter phi does not look as it should. In fact, it looks like this: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/file/n3963311/Untitled.png instead of what is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phi Here's the code I use: expression(phi [1]) Anyone has an idea? Combining a greek letter and a newline on the same label
Hi, I would like to add a two-lines label consisting of: "Delta word1\n word2" (with Delta being the actual greek letter). However, when I try "expression(paste(Delta,"word1\nword2"))", I obtain the following display: "word1\n Delta word2". Do you have any idea on how to obtain the desired display? Specifying Greek Character in Lattice Plot Label
For an axis label I want to include the Greek letter mu within the string. I've not found the proper way of including that expression within the string. What I want is "Conductivity (uS/cm)" with the 'u' replaced by mu. When I try "Conductivity (" expression(paste(mu)) "S/cm)" I get an error. If I don't separate Conductivity and S/cm with

greek letters in rgl plot3d
Dear RGL experts, I haven't been able to add greek letters to my rgl plot3d. I have tried "expression" with no success. Here is the interested bit: > library(rgl) > cb <- cube3d() > plot3d(cb,xlab=expression(alpha),ylab="",zlab="",box=FALSE,alpha=0.5) The expression(alpha) appears as "alpha", rather than as a greek symbol. I suspect greek
