Convert "ragged" list to matrix
Hi,
I have a list made up of character strings with each item a different
length (each item is between 1and 6 strings long). Is there a way to
convert a "ragged" list to a matrix such that each item is its own row?
Here is a simple example:
a=list();
a[[1]] = c("a", "b", "c");
a[[2]] = c("d", "e");
a[[3]] = c("f",

Parenthesis around date/time using chron?
Hi,
I've been using the chron package to convert excel time into
month/day/year and h:m:s formats, specifically for use as axis labels.
I've come across something I don't quite understand.
### Here are some excel times:
dat = c(39083, 39083.00694, 39083.01389, 39083.02083, 39083.02778,
39083.03472, 39083.04167, 39083.04861, 39083.05556, 39083.0625

using chron vector with boxplot
Hi,
I'm having trouble using dates (created using library(chron)) as
groupings for a boxplot. I have 10 repeat measurements of a variable
within an individual day. The measurements were done over 10 days. I
would like to plot the measurements as a box and wisker plot (using
boxplot or something similar) where the days (as chron object) would be
the grouping and the repeated measurements

How to Include greek symbol in axis label?
Hi, I'm fairly new to R, so hopefully this is an easy question...
On a plot, I would like to have the y label read: "Response(phi)" with phi = the greek character. From old posts I've found this:
title(ylab=expression(paste("Response (", phi, ")")))
This displays nicely, but in the default font. I would like to use font=6 (which is the font of the other

Legend symbols (line, points) in one column.
Dear R users:
I want to have in the same column both symbols, line and
points, one for a data, and the other for the model.
How can I do that?
Or is there other better form to show both data and model
in the same graphic? I need to make the difference on time
of the same subject (repeated measurements on time)

Data frame manipulation by eliminating rows containing extreme values
Dear All,
I have got the limits for removing extreme values for each variables using
following function .
f=function(x){quantile(x, c(0.25, 0.75),na.rm = TRUE) - matrix(IQR(x,na.rm =
TRUE) * c(1.5), nrow = 1) %*% c(-1, 1)}
#Example:
n <- 100
x1 <- runif(n)
x2 <- runif(n)
x3 <- x1 + x2 + runif(n)/10
x4 <- x1 + x2 + x3 + runif(n)/10

Manipulation of longitudinal data by row
I have a dataset of the form below, consisting of one unique ID per
row, followed by a series of visit dates. At each visit there are
values for 3 dichotomous variables. Of the 8 different possible
combinations of the three variables, 4 are "abnormal" and the
remaining 4 are "normal". Everyone starts out abnormal, and then
either continues to be abnormal at subsequent visits,

Accessing items in a list of lists
Using R 2.6.2, say I have the following list of lists, "comb":

data2 <- list(a = 4, b = 5, c = 6)
data3 <- list(a = 3, b = 6, c = 9)
comb <- list(data1 = data1, data2 = data2, data3 = data3)
So that all names for the lowest level list are common. How can I most
efficiently access all of the sublist items "a" indexed by the outer

Faster way to zero-pad a data frame...?
Hello List,
I am working on creating periodograms from IP network traffic logs using the Fast Fourier Transform. The FFT requires all the data points to be evenly-spaced in the time domain (constant delta-T), so I have a step where I zero-pad the data.
Lately I've been wondering if there is a faster way to do this. Here's what I've got:
* data1 is a data frame consisting of

Problem with strptime
Hello Forum,
I have a problem with the strptime function. With the ''data1'' dataset below
it works fine, but with the ''data2'' dataset something goes wrong (see final
line below). Both data1 and data2 are in exactly the same original format,
the only difference is that they span different dates. Please help, since it
is driving me nuts! Many thanks.
