anova power calculations
I sent a message a couple days ago about doing calculations for power of the
ANOVA. Several people got back to me very quickly which I really
appreciated.
I'm working now on a similar problem, but instead of a balanced ANOVA, I
have an unbalanced one. The first part of the question was:
You assume that the within-population standard deviations all equal 9. You

''$'' placeholder naming can confuse your runner
Hi guys, I''m facing a strange behavior that smells like a bug.
consider this scenario:
Scenario: I''m cool
Given that I am cool 4 times out of 7
and this step:
Given("that I am cool $n times out of $n_total") do |n, n_total|
...
end
When running my story, this step is considered as PENDING.
If I change the name of the second placeholder to $total, the step
runs

help with legacy R code
Hi there,
Could somebody help me disect this legacy R script I inherited at work, I
have two questions:
1. I've tried to upgrade our R version from 1.6.2 (yeah, I know), to R 2.0,
but some of the lines in this script are not compatible with R 2.0, could
someone help me figure out where the problem is?
2. the jpeg generated (attached) seems to be off on some of the data, is
there a better way

sscanf equivalent
I have a data file from which I need to read portions of
data but data location/quantity can change from file to file.
I wrote some code and have a working solution but it seems
wasteful to have to do it this way. Here's the contrived
incomplete code.
datalines <- readLines(datafile.pathname)
# marker will appear on line preceding and following
# actual data

Downloading tab separated data from internet
Hi all,
I am trying to download some tab separated data from the internet. The data
is not available directly at the URL that could be known apriori. There is
an intermediate form where start and end dates have to be given to get to
the required page.
For example, I want to download data for a station 03015795. The form for
this station is at:

Segfault with GridCellChoiceEditor
I have a problem.
In my application I have a few Grid objects in a Notebook. The Grid objects
are populated via GridTableBase. Certain Grid cells need to have a choice
interface (I''m artificially enforcing foreign key constraints). All this
works to the point where you try to edit the value for that cell. The
choice box renders (i.e. the drop down arrow appears) then the application

power of 2 way ANOVA with interaction
I've been searching for an answer to this for a while but no joy. I have a simple 2-way ANOVA with an interaction. I'd like to determine the power of this test for each factor (factor A, factor B, and the A*B interaction). How can I do this in R? I used to do this with "proc Glmpower" in SAS, but I can find no analogue in R.

I am a complete novice R programmer. (Though I know C quite well)
I am trying to write some R code to do the following simulation.
There is a 2-frame "movie" of noise and signal dots. the noise
dots have random positions in each frame. The signal dots are

calling a function with dynamically generated buttons
Hallo,
I'm dynamically generating buttons depending on the number of rows of
my dataframe. Every button is supposed to call a function which
generates a plot with the values of one of my dataframe rows.
My code looks like this:
base <- tktoplevel()
plotten <- function(mat, namen, titel) {
midpts <- barplot(height=mat, names.arg = namen, main =

Reading data entered within an R program
Dear R-helpers,
I know of two ways to reading data within an R program, using
textConnection and stdin (demo program below). I've Googled about and
looked in several books for comparisons of the two approaches but
haven't found anything. Are there any particular advantages or
disadvantages to these two approaches? If you were teaching R beginners,
which would you present?
Thanks,

contrast matrix for aov
How do we specify a contrast interaction matrix for an ANOVA model?
We have a two-factor, repeated measures design, with
Cue Direction (2) x Brain Hemisphere(2)
Each of these has 2 levels, 'left' and 'right', so it's a simple 2x2 design
matrix. We have 8 subjects in each cell (a balanced design) and we want to
specify the interaction contrast so that:

I am attempting to graph 12 months of temperatures, delineate the months with a vline and place the names of the months at the top of the graph.
So far I have gotten everything to work except the names, despite getting a similar graph to work yesterday the day before yesterday with Baptise A's help. Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong. Data set is below code.
Thanks.
