is it a bug or a feature? re:time zone differences, laptops, and suggestion for a new option
I just did a win2k install, and as I thought i'd remembered, it asked whether the hardware clock was UTC or localtime (and recommends localtime). Of course, I chose UTC, but most would probably follow MegaSloth's recommendation. I don't know how to change it on an already-installed system, though. Does anyone else? select options for HABTM?
I''ve looked through the docs and the wiki and can''t figure out how to go about generating select options and the update function for an item that has a HABTM relationship. I have a ''parks'' table and the park model has a HABTM to the ''states'' table. On the park edit page, I''d like a multiple select box to appear with all states show,

Weird time(zone)?
I installed CentOS 5 on a server today (wiping clean the drive which had 4.4 on it). During installation I picked the correct timezone, location and all. Yet, upon booting the machine, it seems to think that it's 6 hours earlier than it really is. The BIOS has the correct time and date on it. /etc/locatime was originally what /usr/share/zoneinfo/America/Denver would've

categories and admin/categories - different controllers and templates?
Is there some way to have these two sets of URLs use totally different controllers and templates? categories/list categories/show/1 admin/categories/list admin/categories/edit/1 admin/categories/destroy/1 admin/categories/update/1 Besides, of course, using different controller names ;). The first URL is publicly accessible, while the second contains admin functions. Also, with the second,

Page caching feeds and cache file extensions
I have a feeds controller which generates RSS and Atom pages. I put ''caches_page :show'' in it. The problem is that the pages are saved with an html extension. As a result, browsers display the cached feeds as HTML rather than XML, and feed validators complain. There''s an option to set ''Base.page_cache_extension'' globally, but I don''t want

Strange issue with system time being off
Hi all, I am having an issue with some older CentOS 5.3 servers. Every time the server boots, it gives the error "Cannot access the hardware clock by any known method", and then promptly sets the time 5 hours behind the hardware clock, down to the second. After the system is up. "hwclock" works fine. hwclock --debug does not show any error at all. The hardware clock is

Postgresql vs MySQL
Is there any reason to avoid using postgresql for small web apps? That is, is it''s overhead so large that the lighter MySQL will work substantially better for small apps on small machines? Or are they very similar in performance and configuration? I''ve used MySQL but postgresql has its appeals and I''m wondering if I need to keep MySQL around at all. On the other

How to create distortion, echo, and chopping sound in a SIP trunk?
Hi everyone, How can I introduce some distortion, echo, chopping sound and all other bad quality things that can happen to a SIP trunk? I have plenty of bandwidth and crisp clear lines so the only thing that I can think of is to limit bandwidth but even that requires quite some scripting work. Is there any easy way to simulate a distorted SIP line temporarily for testing? I am appreciate

Chopping off the wideband?
BTW, when you have something working and stable, I could include it in the main Speex distribution. If I encode something in ultra-wideband, can I decode it in wideband by chopping off bytes in every frame?
