ipred bagging segfault on 64 bit linux build
I wanted to report this issue here so others may not find themselves alone and as the author is apparently active on the list. I havent done an exhaustive test by any means, cause I dont have time. But here's a small example. Apparently the "ns" argument is the one that is killing it. I've gotten several different segfault messages, the only other one I remember said "out

txtStart creates a NULL file
Hello all: I'm trying to use the following code to get commands, comments and results to a .txt file. It only appears to capture comments. When I comment those out with #, it creates a NULL file. Someone seemed to have a similar problem with a mac GUI (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2010-September/253177.html) but the result seemed to be ambiguous. Is there a work-around?

R question for Stata users
Hi... In Stata, there is the ability to display scatter plots with data points at the same (x,y) location, using the 'jitter' command of the twoway scatter stata command. Anyone know of a way that I can do the equivalent thing in R? For non-Stata readers, if jitter is enabled in stata, and n-points would be at the same (x,y) location, the points are offset a bit (according to

Creating a data.frame
OK...newbie question here. Either I'm reading the docs wrong, or I'm totally confused. Given the following: x<-c("aaa","bbb","ccc") y<-rep(0,3) z<-rep(0,3) is.character(x) [1] TRUE is.numeric(y) [1] TRUE Now...I want to create a data frame, but keep the data types. In reading the docs, I assume you do it this way:

Newbie syntax question
Hi... I'm trying to understand the following syntax: cor.test(~mortality + hardness, data=water, method="pearson") which is the same as: cor.test(water$mortality, water$hardness, data=water, method="pearson") Can anyone point me to the correct doc or explain to me how to interpret "~mortality + hardness"? Thanks, Joe

Camping on Wikipedia
Hi all I found the Camping page on Wikipedia in need of some serious TLC, so I updated it, added some newer links and removed the ''stub'' status: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camping_%28microframework%29 I also pointed people to the Github repo for version 1.9. Please take a look and either make suggestions for further material for me to add (not too much...

2-Y-axes on same plot
Hi... Is this possible in R? I have 2-sets of data, that were collected simultaneously using 2- different data acquisition schemes. The x-values are the same for both. The y-values have different ranges (16.4-37.5 using one method, 557-634 using another). In theory, if you plot both plots on top of each other, the graphs should overlap. The problem I'm having is trying to have to

boxplot width

How do I do that? boxplot(data$site~data$chr, varwidth='TRUE') -- View this message in context: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/boxplot-width-tp2266805p2266805.html Sent from the

Is this a bug with a simple arithmetic operation with a vector object?
Hello- While I was reading a tutorial book for R (actually, for S-Plus:Brian S. Everitt. A Handbook of Statistical Analysis using S-PLUS. Chapman & Hall, London, 1994) I tried to execute this simple exercise: > x <- -c(1,2,3,4,5,6) > X <- -c(10,11,12,100,-5,-6) >x+X [1] -11, -13, -15, -104, 0, 0 As you can see, the added vectors resulted in

Statitics Textbook - any recommendation?
I would like to buy a basic statistics book (experimental design, sampling, ANOVA, regression, etc.) with examples in R. Or download it in PDF or html format. I went to the CRAN contributed documentation, but there were only R textbooks, that is, textbooks where R is the focus, not the statistics. And I would like to find the opposite. Other text I am trying to find is multivariate data

R Book Advice Needed
I am new to using R and would appreciate some advice on which books to start with to get up to speed on using R. My Background: 1-C# programmer. 2-Programmed directly using IMSL (Now Visual Numerics). 3- Used in past SPSS and Statistica. I put together a list but would like to pick the "best of" and avoid redundancy. Any suggestions on these books would be helpful (i.e. too much

ltext - adding text to each panel from a matrix
Hi all (really probably just Deepayan): In the plot below I want to add text on either side of each violin plot that indicates the number of observations that are either positive or negative. I'm trying to do this with ltext() and I've also monkeyed about with panel.text(). The code below is generally what I want but my calls to ltext() are wrong and I'm not sure how to fix them.
