Control of box and staple width in boxplot()

"Error: incorrect number of arguments to lambda"
Hello, all.
I have a somewhat embarrassing error, in that I cannot reliably reproduce
it. I have sporadically experienced the error both on an SGI machine
running Irix 6.5 and on a LinuxPPC machine. I have only seen this error
using version 0.65.0. (I've been using versions since 0.61 or so.)
The error message is in the subject line. Here's the traceback from the

Vaseplots
In The American Statistician vol 42 (1988) pages 257 - 280, Yoav
Benjamini investigates some variations on the box plot, including
vaseplots, which maek the width of each box vary proportionally to he
estimated density at a particular point.
Has anyone implemented these in R ?
Thanks as always

A patch for boxplot.R
[this was sent to R-help-owner instead of R-help.
why on earth ??!???!?
well, I took the liberty to cut the long citation.. MM]
Dear Yusuke
These changes look interesting.
Have you considered being able to specify a different shading or crosshatching
for each box. I can't see how you can do this at present. You can get
different colours but of course this is no good for black

Changing color of points in violin plot
Hello,
I am trying to graph a violin plot like the example in
panel.violin(lattice) with the singer data - see below
Does anyone know how to change the color of the boxplot on the graph
from blue to green? I tried a number of changes, but to no avail.
Thanks for your help,
John

Colour makes my life; but not my bwplot (panel.violin)
Using Trellis, am successfully setting up a number of panels (25) in which I
have two box and violin plots.
I would like to colour - one plot as RED and the other as BLUE (in each
panel). I can do that with the box plots, but the violin density areas just
take on one colour.
My basic call is as follows:
bwplot(rmsd ~ file | code,
data=spread_data.filtered,
panel = function(...,

How to produce notches in bwplot?
Dear r-helpers,
tst <- data.frame(as.numeric(x <- 1:20), f <- rep(c('hi','lo'), times
= 10))
with(tst, bwplot(f ~ x, panel = function(x, y){panel.bwplot(x, y, pch
= '|', stats = boxplot.stats, fill = 8, varwidth = T)}))
I can't figure out from the documentation how to tell stats that I
would like to see notches or (even bands).
Here is what I've

graphsheet and export.graph equivalents in R?
R Experts
I'm currently using an S+ script of the following format and would
like to convert it to R. The script opens a graphsheet with an
associated name, plots something (in this case a boxplot) and then
exports the contents of the graphsheet of the assigned name to an EMF
file. I've been looking for something in R that would work the same way
but to no avail.
Could someone

Placing eps files from R into Adobe InDesign documents: specifying fontfamily
This is a solution I am posting for a problem that others may have.
If you want to:
1. Place lattice graphics from R into an Adobe InDesign document, and
2. Use the export as eps function in R to maximize resolution (it is much
better than exporting as a metafile or bitmap), and
3. Use long strings of text in your titles or captions or to label your
axes.
Then you will have problems because:

ltext - adding text to each panel from a matrix
Hi all (really probably just Deepayan):
In the plot below I want to add text on either side of each violin plot that
indicates the number of observations that are either positive or negative.
I'm trying to do this with ltext() and I've also monkeyed about with
panel.text(). The code below is generally what I want but my calls to
ltext() are wrong and I'm not sure how to fix them.

boxplot with diamond shape
Hi,
I haven't found in R a possibility to draw a boxplot with a diamond
shape (means and CI).
Does anyone know how to plot it ?
thanks,

add horizontal reference lines in lattice bwplot
I'm plotting a lattice bwplot from a data.frame and would like to add some horizontal lines indicating some reference values (preferably with text annotation) as well as a grid of regular log tics. The following illustrates the plot:
data(ToothGrowth)
require("lattice")
p = bwplot(exp(len) ~ supp, ToothGrowth,
panel = function(..., box.ratio) {

controlling the x axis of boxplots
v 2.0.1 (sooooh old!) on Win2k
I think I know the answer to this but I can hope ...
I have data for continuous variables (measures of residents) by a
categorical variable in range (1,22), the units in which they live.
I want to plot these data with a pair of boxplots one above another
with same x-axis (1,22) using par(mfrow=c(2,1)) and then plotting
first for the women then for the men.

R-alpha: boxplot(..., varwidth = TRUE, ...) in 0.50a4
To use Ron Ziegler's famous phrase, that argument is "no longer
operative". The code for the bxp function, which is what is called to
actually do the plotting, has a section
if (!is.null(width)) {
if (length(width) != n | any(is.na(width)) |
any(width <= 0))
stop("invalid boxplot widths")
width <- 0.8 * width/max(width)
}
else if (varwidth) {

[LLVMdev] Potential SimplifyCFG optimization; hammock to diamond transformation
The specific code I'm looking at does not have any function calls. The
"lots of FP math" is just a series of FP addition, subtraction and division.

Re: diamond graphs, patents and rootograms
Talking about Excel, you can produce excellent graphs in Excel. Yes you
have to work at it, but you can get there. The problem is that they are
not the default. My gut feeling is that R will make more of an impact in
the presentation of graphics than any implementation in Excel.
So even if a patent were granted and it made itself into a mainstream
package, would it change the world or would the
