how to specify modes of certain fields in read.table
I have a data file with 50 columns. Among them, there are two coordinates, X and Y X Y 641673.78807 3607080.78438 641436.56207 3607108.30543 641165.28042 3607136.82957 640879.58373 3607116.20568 When I use read.table, it rounds X and Y to the maximal 8 decimal number as. 641673.8 3607081 641436.6 3607108 641165.3 3607137 640879.6 3607116 640683.5 3607105 My question

how to generate a column based on other columns in a data frame

decrease amount of ticks on y axis in lattice levelplot
Hi all, How can I decrease the number of ticks on the y-axis in a lattice levelplot()? I have as many ticks displayed on the y-axis as I have columns of data (1000 columns), how can I decrease this amount of ticks, while still properly displaying all the data? Note that I get my data from a matrix object, in which the z-values of the levelplot are the actual values in the matrix, whereas the

how to extract characters from a character string
Hi, I ran into a problem when I complied a dataset with UTM coordinates. For calculating distances between sites, I need to reformat the coordinates from, for example, 32?35.421 N, to 35.421, i.e. I need to delete all digits before symbol ? and a space and N at the end of the string. What functions I should use? Thanks in advance. Weidong Gu, Department of Medicine University of

run optim() on a list
Hi, I am at the end of my wit to figure out how to run the optim function on a list. Basically, I have a data set of three columns as "Site", "Pool" and "Positivity" ( the full data set is copied at the end). I want to run the maximal likelihood estimation separately on subsets split by "Site" data<-read.table(...)

panel function question
I have two data sets with locations, X, Y of houses (df.house) and habitats(df.habitat), respectively. In each dataset, there are 3 replicates (Repeat). Because each replicate has different locations of houses and habitats, I would like to plot them in panels. I wrote something like this: mypanel<-function(x,y,subscripts,...){ panel.xyplot(x,y,pch=20) panel.xyplot(

a strange behavior with ifelse
I have used R for years but run into a seemingly simple problem involving 'ifelse'. condensed code like this a=c(2,NA,NA,NA,2,2,NA,2,NA,2) b=c(NA,1,1,NA,2,2,2,2,2,2) #I want to combined a and b into c so that c would be a valid number either a or b is not missing c=ifelse(a==1|b==1,1,ifelse(a==2|b==2,2,NA)) cbind(a,b,c) a b c [1,] 2 NA NA [2,] NA 1 1 [3,] NA 1 1

Levelplot + Mosaic Plot hybrid?
Hi. I have built a levelplot with 3 variables, X, Y, and Z where X and Y are the two axes and Z represents the intensity (i.e. Z~X*Y). Now I want to adjust the size of the grid (like a mosaic plot) where the size of each grid is weighted by a variable, W. Just wonder how can I do that with levelplot? I tried exploring mosaic plot. How can I manipulate the "col" option to make it

Repost:lattice graphics -- legend color problems
Hello R-folks, I don't get the color of the legend in a lattice-plot right. I select a palette from RColorBrewer and use (with a col = mypalette argument) it in the barchart plot. The resulting graph shows the new palette in the graph, but uses the standard palette in the legend rectangles. Adding a col argument into auto.key uses the new palette with the legend text, but not in the

navigating ggplot viewports
list(...) I can not get at the grid viewports in a ggplot2 plot. I know there is supposed to be a viewport called "panel_1_1" but downViewport() can't find it. Has the viewport been popped? I had a quick look at the functions involved (eg ggplot_plot) but there is no obvious problem there. > library(ggplot2) > qplot(1:10, 1:10) > current.viewport() viewport[ROOT] >

RGTK2 and glade on Windows - GUI newbie
Hallo, I'd like to write a GUI (first choice with GTK+). I've surfed through the R- an Omegahat-Pages, because I'd like to use RGTK2, GTK 2.10.11 in combination with glade on Windows XP (perhaps later Unix, Mac). I've found a lot of different information. Because of the information I'm not sure, if this combination is running on Windows XP and I'm unsure how it works. Is

Reg. consensus ranking
Dear All, I have a list of models(1000) which have variable scores from 20 different method. I would like to rank models using consensus approach based on high scores from different methods.Is there any function available in R for this purpose? I will appreciate any pointers in this regard. Thank you very much in Advance, Mallika

{lattice/grid} "Error using packet 1" and traceback
On some errors during the plot of a lattice/grid graphics, there is written a message like "Error using packet 1: missing value where TRUE/FALSE needed" into the concering panel and the next panel is plotted. Which option I could use to stop the execution to have a look at the error by a traceback? Regards - Wolfram

problems with arrangement of figures by layout function
Hi, I want to have histograms behind the regression tree figure. Since 7 leafs resulted from the tree model (rpart), it would be nice to have correspondent histograms below the tree figure. After a little study, I could generate the correspondent histogram for each leaf, but can't figure out how to arrange them in the right place. I tried something like

R code for selecting places spatially and by time
Hi all The code of trying to write relates to selecting properties (given by x and y co-ordinates) spatially (distance "X" from "infected" properties identified by date) over a certain time period. i.e. what properties are within 3 km from properties infected on "2008-01-01" over the last 14 days. Is any one able to give me some clues on how to write code to solve

Corrected : Efficient writing of calculation involving each element of 2 data frames
Hi I have 2 data.frames each of the same number of rows (approximately 30000 or more entries). They also have the same number of columns, lets say 2. One column has the date, the other column has a double precision number. Let the column names be V1, V2. Now I want to calculate the correlation of the 2 sets of data, for the last 100 days for every day available in the data.frames. My code looks

Strange behavior with time-series x-axis
I recently called plot(x,y) where x was an array of POSIXct timestamps, and was pleasantly surprised that it produced a nice plot right out of the box: z <- as.POSIXct(c("2006-10-26 08:00:00 EDT","2007-10-25 12:00:00 EDT")) x <- seq(z[1],z[2],len=100) y <- 1:100 plot(x,y,type="l") The X axis had nice labels, one tick mark every other month. Mahalanobis distances
Dear R community Have just recently got back into R after a long break and have been amazed at how much it has grown, and how active the list is! Thank you so much to all those who contribute to this amazing project. My question: I am trying to calculate Mahalanobis distances for a matrix called "fgmatrix" >dim(fgmatrix) [1] 76 15 >fg.cov <- cov.wt(fgmatrix)

Why doesn't formatC( x, digits=2, format="g") doesn't always give 2 sig figs?
Hi all I am not a C programmer, but I am trying to understand formatC to get consistent printing of reals to a given number of significant digits. Can someone please explain this to me? These first three give what I expect on reading ?formatC: > formatC(0.0059999, digits=2,format="fg",flag="#") [1] "0.0060" > formatC(0.59999,

Bug/Error in formatC? (Was: Why doesn't formatC( x, digits=2, format= "g")...)

In particular, bug, error or not, any ideas about how I can consistently get two significant figures to print?
