How do I retain "POSIXct" formatting when using apply, with FUN=max?

I noticed something surprising (in R 2.2.1 on WinXP)
According to the documentation, rownames and colnames are character vectors.
Assigning a vector of class POSIXct or POSIXlt as rownames or colnames
therefore is not strictly according to the rules.

I basically understood all your suggestions.
I am using an old version of R (version 3.6.3, installed in a server I am not allowed to control), and the new pipe operator does not work.
I tried to run your code without the "|>" operator, but I get an error when I use apply.
Could you please expand your code without the pipe operator?

I was wondering whether there has ever been an update on the rownames and
colnames behaviour as described by Eric below?
I still get the same behaviour, exactly as described by Eric, on my WinXP
installation of R-2.3.0. I also posted a message to r-help on Friday but

Using base R only, the following seems to do what you want.
with(mydf, ave(speed, date_time, type, FUN = weighted.mean, w = n_vehicles))

r help date format changes with c() vs. rbind()
Dear List,
I am having a problem with dates and I would like to understand what is going on. Below is an example. I can produce a date/time using as.POSIXct, but I am trying to combine two as.POSIXct objects and keep getting strange results. calculating p-values of columns in a dataframe
I have a dataframe ("mydf") that contains "differences of means".
I wish to test whether these differences are significantly different from zero.
Below, I calculate the t-statistic for each column.
What is a "good" method to calculate/look-up the p-value for each column?

Summarize by two-column factor, retaining original factors
I am having trouble doing the following. I have a data.frame like
this, where x and y are a variable that I want to do calculations on:

you could use split/ lapply approach, however it is probably not much better than dplyr method.
sapply(split(mydf, mydf$type), function(speed, n_vehicles) sum(mydf$speed*mydf$n_vehicles)/sum(mydf$n_vehicles))
gives you averages
aggregate(mydf$n_vehicles, list(mydf$type), sum)$x
gives you sums
