degree-min-sec data
Hello - Have both astronomic and geodetic data sets with values in the form "ddd:mm:ss.sssss", where dd is an integer between -180 and 180, mm is an integer between 0 and 60, and ss is a floating-point number between 0 and 60.0. In order to do anything useful with these values they need to be turned into their "decimal degree" equivalent. Assuming the data is a vector y, the

Can't connect to samba from foreign network --- 'Gethostbyaddr failed' error in log.smb
I have a samba server at ip address aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd I can connect to it from clients on subnets aaa.bbb.eee. and aaa.bbb.fff. I can't connect to it from clients on ggg.hhh. smb.conf has hosts deny = all hosts allow = localhost, aaa.bbb., ggg.hhh. The client can successfully 'ping mysambaserver' (resolves to aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd). Doing 'net view \\mysambaserver' fails with

nlm and "missing argument
Dear R Gurus, I am having a little difficulty with nlm. I've searched the archives and found nothing that tells me why this is occuring -- though there are some slightly similar issues. A simple example: lev2<-function(aaa,bbb,ccc,ddd,eee){ res<-aaa+bbb+ccc+ddd+eee res } nlm(lev2,p=c(32,4,5),ddd=45,eee=23) Error in f(x, ...) : argument "bbb" is missing, with no default

mysterious rounding digits output
Well pointed out, Jim! It is infortunate that the documentation for options(digits=...) does not mention that these are *significant digits* and not *decimal places* (which is what Joshua seems to want): "?digits?: controls the number of digits to print when printing numeric values." On the face of it, printing the value "0,517" of 'ccc' looks like printing 4

- round() strange behaviour
Hi, I am getting some strange results using round - it seems that it depends if the number before the decimal point is odd or even .... For example: > round(1.5)[1] 2> round(2.5)[1] 2 While i would expect that round(2.5) be 3 and not 2. Do you have any explanation for that? I really appreciate your input, Monica

Pros and Cons of R
Hi, I am doing a very informal presentation for my office about R capabilities to deal with and analyze spatial data, display data and maps, and connections with GIS. I've used in my presentation info from the CRAN, the spatial Task view, and the more striking graphics examples from http://addictedtor.free.fr/graphiques/thumbs.php and NCEAS
