things that are difficult/impossible to do in SAS or SPSSbut simple in R
Good morning,
I use SAS and R/S-Plus as my primary tools so I have a lot of experience with these programs. By far and away, SAS is superior for handling the "messy" datasets, but also the very large ones. I work at times with datasets in the hundreds of thousands (and on occasion, millions) of records. SAS, and especially PROC SQL, are invaluable for this. But once I get to

Help with gamm errors
Dear All
Hopefully someone out there can point out what I am missing! I have a
(large, several hundred) dataset of gardens in which over two years the
presence/absence of a particular bird species is noted each week. I have
good reason to believe there is a difference between the two years in the
weekly proportion of gardens and would like to assess this, before going on

Ceiling to the nearest ten?
R-users,
Is there a function for ceiling to the nearest ten?
a <- 1:10*4
a
[1] 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40
The resulting vector should look like this ("ceiling to the nearest ten")
[1] 10 10 20 20 20 30 30 40 40 40
Thanks in advance

different colors for two wireframes in same plot
Hello R,
According to:
g <- expand.grid(x = 1:10, y = 5:15, gr = 1:2)
g$z <- log((g$x^g$g + g$y^2) * g$gr)
wireframe(z ~ x * y, data = g, groups = gr,
scales = list(arrows = FALSE),
drape = TRUE, colorkey = TRUE,
screen = list(z = 30, x = -60))
i have two wireframes in one plot.
How could i change the color of the top - one to transparent (or only the grid).

Asterisknow with video and X-Lite not quite working
Hello everyone,
I have previously asked this question on the asterisk-video list, but I
got directed here.
I have a setup consisting of asterisknow beta4 (not sure if that is
crucial) and a few clients all running X-Lite 3.0 (not eyebeam) on the
local network. My computer has a USB-Camera installed, and now I would
like to do some video calling with it, at least, so that the other user

SVM, feature selection and parameter tuning
Hi,
Does anyone know why the package MCRestimate is not part of the BioConductor 2.2 anymore?
I am looking for package doing support vector machine analyses including (i) variable/feature selection and (ii) parameter tuning in one learning period.
Many thanks,
Stefan

sum variable as long condition is true
Hello R
For expierienced user, the following problem will be easy to solve:
a<-c(0,1,0,1,0,2,3,4,3,2)
b<-c(3,3,3,4,4,4,7,7,7,10)
c<-data.frame(a,b)
Data Frame c contains tow colums. I would like to sum up all values in a as long as b stays the same:
sum(a[which(b==1)])
does this, but i have to manually put in b
then i tryied st like this, but i canno't save it properly

every standart par works like this:
x<-seq(1,10,0.1)
y<-sin(x)
plot(sin(x))

several image.plots with same axis (maximum)
Hello R freaks
I have the following problem:
I have several image plots, that need to have the same axis. i want to specify the range from 0 to a maximum value. The problem is, that the axis then only goes to the highest value of the respective plot.
E.g: this is a modified example from the help file "image.plot" z values go until 25. My maximum in plot two is set to 30, so I want the

strange: yaxis inversion with zoo not possible?
hej there
I want to invert the yaxis as follows:
x<-rnorm(1:50)
plot(x^2, type="h", ylim=c(0,10))
plot(x^2, type="h", ylim=c(10,0))
then doing the following it won't work - kind of strange isn't it?
x.zoo<-zoo(x^2)
plot(x.zoo, type="h", ylim=c(10,0))
plot(x.zoo, type="h", ylim=c(0,10))
how can I invert the axis with zoo objects?

Hi folks,
we have a problem with a win2003 DC and Samba. The authentification of users from the dc works fine, but when we added users from a forest trust in a active directory localgroup, samba don't find the users...
I post this problem here:

partially sum variable of a dataframe
Hello,
A stupid question:
I have an array with two columns, the first "a" acting as my index in 0.25 steps, the second one "b" the column of interest. How can i sum up "b" only for a specified window in "a" (as the window command for time series)
a=seq(0,10,0.25)
b=runif(41)
c=data.frame(a,b)
Sum up c if 3<a<5.25
How to do that? thanks

Prediction accuracy from Bagging with continuous data
I am using bagging to perform Bagged Regression Trees on count data (bird abundance in Britain and Ireland, in relation to climate and land cover variables). Predictions from the final model are visually believable but I would really like a diagnostic equivalent to classification success that can be used to decide if a model is adequate. Whereas with classification data an error rate is returned,

reading an image and adding a legend
Hi all,
I would like to
1. Read in an arcmap image into R (I can export pretty much any type of image jpeg, bitmap etc from arcmap)
2. Use R to create a nice colour legend in the plot
First of all, Is this possible?
So far I'm stuck on point 1. I have tried read.pnm() from pixmap and read.jpeg() from rgl.
the pnm example provided works fine

spss, string factors, selecting
Hi,
I am having trouble with a large dataset I am importing from SPSS.
The problem is I have to merge two datasets (which seems to be
working OK) then select rows based on attributes. I have a column
with either blank cells, B or E entered. I want to select all rows
with E. I have other columns with numerical data which I will then do
analyses on.
data[column==" E"] does not
