cluster analysis using Dmax
Dear All,
a long time ago I ran a cluster analysis where the dissimilarity matrix used
consisted of Dmax (or Kolmogorov-Smirnov distance) values. In other words
the maximum difference between two cumulative proportion curves. This all
worked very well indeed. The matrix was calculated using Dbase III+ and
took a day and a half and the clustering was done using MV-ARCH, with the
resultant

How to get special (Hershey) font symbols into plot axis labels?
Dear R experts-
I'm running R 1.2.3 (2001-04-26) on Linux.
I need to get special symbols, such as a circle with a dot in it
as used to indicate Solar units in astronomy, into my plot axis labels.
How can I do this?
Using the R documentation on the Hershey font sets, one can plot
a Solar symbol within the world coordinates of a plot like this:
>plot(1:10,1:10)

dissimilarity matrices
Dear All,
I have a dissimilarity matrix which I happily convert to a distance object
by running:
X <- as.dist(Y)
and I can happily now run either hclust(X) or agnes(X).
So that the various bits of output are labelled correctly I would dearly
like to be able to give names to the columns and rows of X, as would happen
if I ran:
mydata<-read.table("clipboard",header=T)

Font in JavaGD() & pdf()
Dear r-helpers,
When I do an xYplot and display the result in a JavaGD() window, the
font is sans-serif (presumably Helvetica). When I send the figure to
a pdf, I get a serif font (presumably times). How do I insure that
the font in the pdf is indeed the default sans serif?

postscript file to pdf.
If I specify the option 'family' like above ( =

How to enable Arial font for postcript/pdf figure on Windows?
Hi,
I need to generate some figure using the Arial font as a requirement for
PLoS.
Following their guidelines, I have converted the windows font files
arial.tff files to .afm using tff2afm (exec file from MikTeX), but when I
try to generate a postcript file, the postcript device does not recognize
the .afm files.
The code I use to test the new font is the following:

pdf font embedding --- again
dear R wizards--- I would like to do some book-on-demand printing at a
popular printer named lulu, but lulu requires inclusion even of the
basic postscript fonts. Interestingly, my book itself does not need
the 14 base acrobat fonts, only the embedded R figures do. Of course,
I really would like to get pdftex to embed the fonts, but how to do
this is not obvious either. [This method seems

Graphical output format
Dear colleagues,
Saving a plot with pdf gives a very nice result:
pdf("myplot.pdf")
par(font=1,family='serif')
plot(pressure)
dev.off()
Doing the very same with other formats (png, jpeg, tiff) gives far
worse results. Is there anything to do to make a plot in some other
format than pdf look like the pdf? Hardly any journal accepts pdf
files for figures, and most do accept png

Specifying fonts in R
Hi
I am a novice user of R. I got hold of "R Graphics" by P. Murrell the other
day and am trying to follow examples in the book. In chapter 3, the section
on font specification gives 16 "basic" font families and face combinations
available in R (Figure 3.9). However, the book also warns that even if a
font specification is given, it does not mean that the font will always be

rgl.postscript generating pdf: floating xlab, font size, transparency
Hello,
I very much enjoy rgl! But when converting the screen output to pdf
using rgl.postscript I have encountered three problems:
(1) I don't seem to have control over font sizes and point sizes (of
added points) in the pdf output. I tried cex from "plot" but that
does not have an effect. Initially I got some plots where fonts and
especially points were far too small. But now

Should this PDF render correctly without font embedding?
A professor here at Vanderbilt sent me the following code. Each of the
text strings should right justify against the center vertical bar, but
because of font issues it doesn't. I understand that there are
workarounds, but I was just curious if this was consistent across all
platforms. On linux with R 2.7.1 and R-trunk (r46103), both acrobat
reader 8 and kpdf render it incorrectly. How
