Very small scores for search results
Hi Everyone,
I''m using Ferret 0.10.11 with acts_as_ferret from SVN (same results with
0.10.10 and 0.10.9 though).
I''m running into an odd problem where the scores of my top-ranking
search results are ridiculously small - even when the query is one that
should match at least one document with a decent score.
To give an example, I have just the names of 5 businesses indexed

crash on repeated search
I have found another crash in ferret; this one just uses a regular
search. It''s similar to an issue reported by Matt Schnitz a while ago,
but unlike his, mine does not go away if I turn off omit_norms. It does
go away if I turn on the garbage collector more often, but I''m not sure
that''s a stable workaround under the circumstances.
This one isn''t a

Updating to the bleeding edge version of Ferret
Hey guys,
It has occurred to me that a lot of people need some of the fixes I
make to Ferret ASAP and don''t like having to wait to long for the gem.
On the other hand, it is a bit of a pain to download and install from
subversion because then you need to uninstall when the next gem comes
out. So I thought I may as well put some instructions out as to how
you can build your own Ferret gem

Ferret-0.10.3 released
Hey all,
I''ve just released Ferret 0.10.3. It is mostly just a bugfix release.
I''ve also added Ferret::Analysis::HyphenFilter which filters
hyphenated words for better search results. Basically the way it works
is it concatenates a hyphenated word as well as adding the two
separate terms. So "set-up" becomes "setup", "set", "up" so

install ferret on windows
Hi!
I''m trying to install ferret on windows, so I chose
ferret-0.10.9-mswin32.gem from the download page, as it includes a
already pre-compiled ferret_ext.so (is that correct?) and I don''t have
any C compiler here. The gem installed it correctly, but the test didn''t
work. So I called these commands:
rake ext
ruby setup.rb config
ruby setup.rb setup
ruby setup.rb

Win XP / Ferret & Acts_as_ferret .dump problem
Hey,
Has anyone managed to bypass or fix the ferret''s .dump method problem?
When I include acts_as_ferret my whole rails app just blows up because
of Ferret''s .dump method. Ex:
---
print "\t hello".dump >> "\t hello">Exit code: 0

require ''ferret''
print "\t hello".dump >> " hello"(NUL

Ferret 0.3.0 released
Hi folks,
This latest release of Ferret has a lot of improvements. There have
been substantial improvements to performance. Try it for yourself to
see. I won''t be publishing any numbers just yet. I will say though
that it''s still about 2-4 times slower than Lucene with the extension
installed. There is also some performance improvements in the pure
Ruby version if you

Ferret just got faster.
Hey guys,
Sorry I haven''t been around for the last few days. I''ve just finished
a coding marathon fixing up some of the performance problems in
Ferret. If you don''t know what I''m talking about there has been a
problem with Filters and Sorts on large indexes. Well, I think I''ve
fixed the problem.

help files for libraries that aren't in the defaults library tree
Hello,
I created a library for a bunch of functions that I use frequently
so that I dont have to carry duplicate copies around to wherever I fire
up an R sesssion. However, I have problems locating the help files
for those functions. Here are some details.
I created the library "myR" and installed this in /home/royle/R
using:
R INSTALL -l /home/royle/R /home/royle/Rpackages/myR

term vector blues
I have a lot of crashes when I try to use term vectors. Here''s an
example, which crashes pretty consistently. This problem seems to be
somewhat sensitive to platform... people on other OS''s and ruby versions
have reported no error. I have seen this with ferret 0.10.13 and 0.10.14
on debian stable using ruby 1.8.2, but I have observed the same problem
on various other systems as

Ferret not able to read a Lucene Index?
Hi all,
Having problems trying to get Ferret to read an index generated by
Lucene.
Am I right in thinking Ferret should be able to read a Lucene generated
index no problem?
Using the code snippets detailed in
http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/64099#new
Any advice gratefully received.
Many Thanks,
Steven

Bus Error with Ferret 0.9.3 using the BooleanQuery api
Hey guys,
I''ve been trying out ferret 0.9.3 on my powerbook this weekend and I''ve
been triggering ''bus errors'' when using the Query API. If I
programmatically build up strings, it works just fine.
There''s some more information available in the trac ticket
http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/ticket/62
Is anyone successfully using the Query API on

acts_as_ferret rebuilding issue with ferret 0.11.0
Hi,
There is a problem with the way that acts_as_ferret verifies the index
is valid. In ensure_index_exists it looks for a file named ''segments''.
With the 0.11.0 release of ferret there is no file with this name. On my
dummy application I have a ''segments.gen'' and ''segments_2y''.
Changing the test to segments.gen fixes the problem that the

Ferret Wiki Spam - Solutions Anyone?
Hi All,
As some of you may have noticed, the Ferret Wiki has been getting
spammed like crazy. And I haven''t been able to do anything about it
because I just don''t have the time. I''m getting pretty close to
releasing 0.10.0 which has been the major draw on my time for the last
couple of months so I''m going to have some time to look into this
soon. I was

A couple of ferret 0.9.4 exceptions
Hi Dave,
I am using ferret at my site http://gifthat.com and I just had a few
exceptions pop up. I don''t have a way to reproduce them, but my site
just was listed on lifehacker.com and these issues have popped up
under multiple concurrent users (only twice though which I think isn''t
too bad). I am using two lighttpd instances both with read/write
access to the index:
